What color to paint my wire wheels-your thoughts
 

I just bought 5-21" wheels from a fordbarn member, Dean< nice guy. I want to know what colors you think I should pa
int them. The car color is "Balsam Green" with a lighter stripe...but not a '29 color....it currently has yellow wheels but I am toying with RED or a LIGHTER GREEN>..thoughts from purists or those with great Model A knowledge. Thanks Kris

Kris- If you can, post a picture of your car. Someone here might be able to photoshop a few different colors right on the car for you.

As for black, with blackwall tires, to me its like black socks and dress shoes while you are wearing shorts....I agree it looks right but wanted to lighten up the wheel color while accenting the car color and showing off wire wheels....hmmm...got me thinking

Fred has a good point...factory colors were black...I do like the purist point of view...can you tell by the color of the car in my album, if the colors are corect. It was my father-in-laws car and most of it is correct...wish the transmission was an old grinder...but he put the Chevy S-10 5 speed in it...I am going to look through the garage at my mother in laws for the original transmission.

I am not a purist nor do I have a great Model A knowledge. So I am not qualified to answer. I am however very secure in the knowledge that there are at least 12 that are qualified. :-)

I vote for yellow, and I don't mean cream. I like the Spark Yellow Mazda used in 1979. If not yellow, go for black.

Go with the color your heart tells you to -whatever color excites you. Someones elses choice will never be exactly the right choice. Ask me how I know that?

I like straw yellow, goes nicely with pretty much any color. Why not get some pics of a car your color and see which color wheels you like best?

Looked at the pictures of your car. Black would be ok, but it wouldn't do anything for the car. Paint the wheels the same color as your stripe. It will look nice. You'll be glad you did.

To help make up your mind, go to your paint dealer. Have them mix the color you are considering in a aresol (rattle) can. It will cost you about $30.00. Paint one wheel black, the other the color of your stripe or whatever. Take the tires off the rims if you're worried about overspray. Mount the painted rims on your car. Chances are you will sandblast or sand the rims before you paint them anyway. Better to invest $30.00 and be sure then to make a bad choice and have to do it over.

I don't know how experienced you are with Model A's. If you're new to them, please drive one with a stock trans before switching out the 5-speed--could be a big mistake.

Regarding wheels, could you tell us what body style your car is? IMO, the sportier models take better to colored wheels; I really prefer black on my town sedan, and I am far, far from a restoration purist. But, if in your quest you see a color that really lights your fire, go for it--you'll always like it. If on the other hand you choose a color only because it seems like everyone else likes it, you never will.

Light wheels with white walls looks feminine. Since there seems to be so many otherwise hard nosed purists on this site, The factory black wheel would be the standard choice. Little doubt that Ford dealers would repaint wheels to boost sales, but that would be at some distance from the factory, making it a modification. My modified Fords run black and green wheels. Henry's black for 19" wheels would be what?? Glaoos, flat, satin. Anybody have a reccomendation for a rattl e can brand for an experiment??

A nice glossy black would be good. Make sure they run reasonably true then go for black gloss powdercoat.

I have enjoyed all the posts...since I have 9 wheels, I will powdercoat 4 in black and 5 in the green color on the stripe of the car. For the gentleman with the transmission reply, I understand the synchro is great to have...used to drive Crown Coach school busses as a kid with double clutching to find the right gear so I understand the ease of the newer transmission. I like that you are all willing to help me out in my novice state. Funny I have loved A's for so long and now passing the love down to my kids. We are a Ford Family for some reason, 8N, Excursion, Freestyle and now the best of all is the A.

Straw Yellow, a Model A trim color often used on wire wheels looks nice on any shade of green.

I have what looks like Tacoma Cream on my truck right now (in the avitar). I also have a set of wheels that are green that will probably go on it this summer -- only because they have better tires (ie: not weatherchecked). I will have to reserve judgement on my own rig until I see what the green ones look like on it. My friend suggested that I put the green ones only on one side, then I could really be objective in the decision making.
