Ken,
Being an oldtimer I fail to see what pleasure these dopes get out of creating a virus that destroys computers, causing grief and expense to innocent people.

I grew up in a much different time as most on the Fordbarn did.

I'm with you guys. What possible enjoyment could anyone derive from wrecking someone elses property that they don't know or can't see or even know if they succeeded? One of life's current mysteries.

Bud, those type of people probably existed back in the day we were growing up. The difference is they have better tools to do their dirty work with today and the computers and Internet give them the perfect tools to do lots of harm to innocent people.

I don't know John. We never locked the doors to the house or the cars. In my little hometown in WV the population is about the same today as it was in 1960 with two city police and one state policeman. Today you can multiply that by two or more and the newspaper is full of arrests of all kind of crimes, but it is mostly dope driven.

I remember driving my `32 Chevy coupe to Washington DC in 1962. I left the keys in it to go in to a store. When I came out a cop was standing beside it. He really chewed me out for leaving the keys in it and said I was very lucky it was still there. That would have been awful!

Hi Ken , I used to have the same troubles as you are having. Then my sister showed me her I-Mac and said she never gets viruses.I bought one and have never had another problem. They are pricey but when you figure out what your time is worth, plus all the anti-virus stuff you have to keep current on, it is well worth the price in my opinion.

At the risk of sounding like a commercial, do yourself a favor and look at the Apple computers. They are VERY, VERY easy to use, especially for the beginner. You'll never look back. Plus, if you have a problem, any kid in the neighborhood can sort it out in no time.

Its a shame you can't hook a elec welder to your computer and send a nice charge back to the idiot hacker/virus children.

Re: To anybody concerned

Two things I have on my PC that really make a difference how well it runs:

1. Anti-virus program. I use Norton's. Sure it costs me something each year to renew my subscription but I have never had any trouble with viruses nor worms with it on. There are three levels of protection you can buy. I just get the anti-virus. I haven't found a need for the others. I do buy the one for multiple computers since I work at home and have several. Get it here: http://antivirus.norton.com/norton/p...996&country=US

I've heard McAfee is good too but haven't had enough experience with it to report.

2. The one that really makes a difference is Advanced System Optimizer that automatically optimizes my computer as often as I schedule it to. At a minimum I have it find and remove junk files that are taking up space on the hard drive and aren't needed. Weekily it finds several hundred and deletes them. I also have it find and correct errors in the register and optimize it as well as check for outdated drivers and update them. Those three things make it start up and run much faster without any "crashes."

In addition, it can defragment the hard drive so that files are contiguous and quicker to access (I don't do that much because it's very time consuming and doing the other things is keeping my hard drive less than 4% fragmented.) It can also scan for spyware and clean it off. Norton's does that too so I just let it do it. It can also clean hidden privacy traces which I don't care about cause I've nothing to hide with my internet browsing.

As I said, ASO (Advanced System Optimizer) can do any or all of that automatically without any input once it's scheduled to do so. It's exactly what you'll pay the computer store to do when you take it in cause your computer "doesn't seem to be running right." It has a lot of other "tools" that can be used to fix and optimize other things on the computer but they are not automatic and I don't use them. I just let the automatic ones run and that improves my computer enough.

Here it is if you're interested: http://www.systweak.com/aso/

In our day we called them "vandals" - kids that got their kicks out of just destroying things - public toilets and sinks, painting graffiti (although some of them are just frustrated artists), I had a neighbor kid with a BB gun that just liked to shoot things that would break - like the glass electric meter covers. They all have their "mental illnesses" that make them do it. I've thought about it but don't fully understand it. Now that they are grown up they can destroy big time by writing and spreading computer viruses and worms.

I envision a big office facility split down the middle. One side is busy busy developing worms, viruses and invasive advertising programs to be sent out to computers. The other side of the office is busy busy developing software to prevent and remove the latest invasive programs to be sold to dis-trot computer owners. A self perpetuating, make work business.

Re: To anybody concerned

You'll see more of it in the future, not less. Governments are doing it to each other . The US shut down a South American city as a test, and also laid waste to Iran's heavy water project by trashing their computer system. Russia dumps on Georgia's system, everyone does it. The kids developing viruses now are using their accomplishments as intro into the field. Some major money is to be made by those with the savvy to infiltrate secure networks.

Lots of computer viruses are written especially to get around the big anti-virus guys (Norton, McAfee, etc...) I use AVG freeware. Very reliable, used it for years.
I also use a program called C-Cleaner. Keeps the registry and stuff clean.

Both are free downloads from downloads.com , a trusted site for years now.

Re: To anybody concerned

I use Spybot which is freeware and keep it updated. So far, it has taken care of every problem my computer has had. Make sure you run it as "administrator" to make it effective. This is a free and effective solution that works. I run it once a week or any time I notice a change in the way my computer works.

When I was a kid to call someone we just picked up the phone and the operator said, "Number Please" then we'd give her the 4 digit number.

There is still some truth to the adage: "You get what you pay for."
When I think of the hassle of recovering from a virus it's well worth the $30.00 a year for Norton or McAfee to protect my computer.

:) Glad you weren't away from 'The Barn' long ken ct! I'd like to "DITTO" Zaemo and roadster36- - - -Get an Apple iMac, or MacBook. Viruses? Not since 1990 when I switched and I have never had 'Anti' software, firewalls, 'C' cleaner etc. No Apple stock either, darn it! At Apple stores you can actually 'try them on for size' and knowledgeable people that will help you, if you like. (This message 'Made On A Mac':D) Now if I could just find more time to work on that '47 Ford Tudor! Regards

Let me second what Zaemo and others said. Santa should have brought you a MAC!! I got one when I retired and I love it! No muss, no fuss. We also have a PC, and when you fire that baby up, by the time it's done doing all its virus checks, software updates and anything else IT (not you) wants to do, you can be over and done doing whatever and back to living your life.

I ditto all of the above about MAC, my daughter advised me to get a Mac & i'm glad I did. I'm not very computer savvy so this helps a lot.

Re: To anybody concerned

Macs, contrary to popular opinion, are not "virus proof." It's simply that viruses are generally not written for macs (yet!), because they hold such a small market share, and their programming code is generally less "open" than Windows. It has nothing to do with Macs being inherently superior.

As a Windows user since v3.o, and MS-Dos before that, I've never once had a virus. I've also enjoyed the much cheaper cost of PC vs Mac...you'll pay 2 to 3 times more for the Mac.

Every OS has flaws and vulnerabilities, luckily common sense online takes care of 99% of the problems out there. Don't click on stupid stuff.
PEBKAC is the biggest problem out there.

You mean I shouldn't be clicking on the free Viagra ads?

My rule of thumb is I never, ever click on an email link. I go through google to get to the site. My mom got hit by one that said it was fedex trying to deliver a package. Didn't stop to question how FedEx got her email.

Re: To anybody concerned

Some of you have asked why certain people behave the way they do.

It's because they are allowed to.

How often do you hear anything at all about a hacker being caught and punished?

Bad behavior comes in many forms. For example, one guy has been posting here on the Ford Barn with a very offensive forum "nickname."

It's personal, for sure, but it's as though he's taking a can of Krylon and spraying profanity/graffiti on the walls of my favorite website.

... he's allowed to behave like a bad child who thinks he's being cute.

And, nobody says a word.

Doesn't happen over on the Model A side of Ford Barn.

Well, good for them.

His behavior is accepted here. Viruses can infect in many forms. Maybe Apple will come out with a Mac that filters out profane, childish behavior.:)

It's not the complicated or calculated. If something offends you, just report it... I'll take a look... Not a big deal.
