How Long Have You Owned Your Car?
 

Some of us buy and sell cars moving on to the next motoring adventure. The following picture is of someone who never let go of his first car. Now in the auto gallery of the Springfield, MA Museum is a 1928 Rolls Royce Roadster donated by the original owner, M. Allen Swift who passed away in 2010 at the age of 102. He received this car as a graduation gift from his father and drove the car up to his death. The car has an incredible 1,070,000 miles and still is in good operating condition. He is considered to be the oldest living owner of a car since the car was new.

I have owned the phaeton in the avatar since 1965, drove it from California to the MAFCA national convention in New Mexico in 1966.

Yeah.."moving on" , indeed! Now with everlasting regret for some of the auto love affairs that a guy has to let go for various reasons,i.e.- purchase home, kids, family, school and on/on!
Now have one I built, not Ford built. Gathering every nut/bolt from across the country...since 2001. Can not seem to let go of this one. Runs like a singer and looks ugly, to some:eek:

Decades ago, when a young man, I went onto a property that was tucked into the foothills/secluded. After traveling for some time on a seemingly cow path dirt road, I came onto what, at first glance...a junkyard/house,etc.
There, parked near this old home was a car like the one you pictured. With this model were several other such cars even larger. The old timer said they were 'duseys' (?). Often wish I'd had a camera back when.

In 1958 I had a Model A coupe but I sold it to get something faster. I've had the station wagon in my avatar since 1972 and my 28 tudor since 1968.

Anywhere between 5-18 yrs depending on the car. Got my first one in 1993 at the age of 15 and have been adding to the collection since.

I found my 1930 Roadster body in 1962, sold it and got it back without a thing done to it 25 years later. I'd be happy to get it in finished paint ready primer in the next 5 years.

I've had the 31 Briggs SW since 1954. My grandfather gave me the car at that time when I was fourteen. Grandfather purchased the sedan from its original owner in 1933. Attended my first MARC meet with this car in 1957. Fifty years later as a member of the CVMAFC the car was at the MARC meet in Williamsburg.

I got mine for Christmas 1964, from my dad who wanted to get me out of my 1957 Pontiac before I killed myself with it. I'm the third owner and it's never been off the frame--in those days you could get a hell of a car for $400.

In the late 1940's my cousin gave my brother and I a pile of parts that sort of made up a 1929 Model A pickup. It sat around my Dad's place for a few years so in the early 1950's I decided to make something out of it. So I put it together and "modified" it a bit-see below:

The 50's "rod" sat around for many years and deteriated a bit but remained in my barn until 2008. At that time I decided to either get rid of the "junk" in my barn or do something with. Being it had been in the family for a few years, I decided maybe I should do something with it. So I started with what is shown below:

Then after trying to figure out what to do with the pile of "junk", being the body was shot and a few other things were missing, I dicided I would get another body for it and pick up a few other needed things. So in early 2010 this is what it ended up to be:

So in the summer of 2010, our family had it's annual picnic. So I took the old 1929 Model A (now a huckster) up to the picnic because my old 90 some year old cousin (who use to drive the old pickup in the late 1930's) was going to be there. So he did enjoy the "new" rig. See below:

So there you have it-the old Model A has been in the family since the early 1930's and guess it should stay here a little longer.

So I couldn't have the old pickup feel like it owned the place, I then had to get the 1929 Model A coupe. So that is the story of this old guy's Model A's.

I bought my '29 Tudor in 1969, restored it the first time and drove it through high school and college. I re-restored it beginning in 1999 and still have it today.

My driveway seems to be one-way.
I bought a Model "A" Roadster in 1961 - still have it. 50 years.
I bought a 1934 Ford Phaeton in 1963 - still have it. 48 years.
I bought a 1935 Ford Cabriolet in 1967 - still have it. 44 years.
TOTAL .................................................. 142 years !

Got my wide bed pickup in 1967 for $400.

Alas it got rodded, now I have 1930 Tudor to attone for what I did to the pickup.

I bought my first car - a 1930 Model A Coupe -as a sophomore in HS in October 1961 for $125 - still own it today 50 years later. I'm just working on it today as it is - putting a new shorter pitman arm on and loosening the tie rod plugs a little -hopefully to make steering easier.

I have owned my first 1931 Briggs Town Sedan since 1970. Working on second motor now. Should be good for another 40 years.

We've owned the '30 Deluxe roadster since 1959-lost count and have forgotten the dates of purchase and sale of most the other ones. I do remember that quite a few of them that we purchased and sold were in the $100.00 to $500.00 range and many were roadworthy. Time sure flies-the Model A's never seem to change-but BOY O BOY I sure have.

a short-timer here compared to the others.

bought our MARC of Originality Coupe in May 2004,
bought our Town Sedan November 2009.

have also owned 3 Tudors for 3, 4 & 14 years respectively, plus a couple of future projects that moved on before any improvements were made by me.

I have this fantasy that I'm done buying old cars, but my logical mind knows better......;)

Dad has had his 1930 phaeton since 1951 and I have had my 1929 phaeton since 1988. I have a 1947 Hudson Commodore 8 convertible that was given to me in 1966. It is still a "future" project. Model A's keep getting in the way.

Got my '30 fordor for graduation from high school in 1963. Sold it in '68 to buy my '30 cabriolet, also pieced together my '28 pickup in '63, had $147 in it.

I have three Model A's

1930 Coupe since 1941, 70 years
1929 Phaeton since 1954, 57 years (driven to Dearborn 1955 and 1957 for the first two National Model A Meets)
1931 US Mail since 1958, 53 years

Bought my 29 Tudor at the age of 16, my first car, on July 1, 1961; just celebrated 50 years man and boy by rebuilding the engine for the second time.

1929 pickup, 1961, 15th birthday present. The first 2 years I had major rear main oil leak, cut out the side of a thinner can (screw cap on the bottom side) and wired it up under the leak. I could go 2 1/2 miles and then slide a pan under, take the cap off, drain the oil, put the cap back on, dump the oil back in the engine, set the tripmeter, and away we would go free as a bird for 2 1/2 miles.

1929 Coupe for ten years. My Dad helped someone with a big favor that helped him regain a lot of money. When he asked how he could repay him, Dad asked to give him first chance to buy his Model A if he ever decided to sell it. One year later he called Dad and said he would sell the car. Dad knew I always wanted one so he called me to let me buy it. I'm the third owner and hopefully will get to keep it as long as some of you.

I waited forever an thanks to the blessings from my wife I have 2! Our 28 AR sport coupe for a year and a half and our 31 slant window since April. I'm a lucky man!
