Re: 34 trip 3 Attachment(s)
Left Mackay around 8-30 this morning, nice drive over the range to Nebo, one thing, the 34 is not like our A,s on the range, gets over in top gear but with the little 221 engine and 3.54 rear its a bit lazy on the steep corners, where as the A will pull like a train.
A few wide loads today, and lots of fuel tankers, I got too close to a B tripple double decker cattle truck and now have some brown stains on the black paint. dearest fuel so far ,at Cappela 2.22 /ltr the 34 used no oil or water, and fuel around 12 ltrs /100ks. Tomorrowwe are headed to Roma 405klms so another easy drive. lawrie |

Re: 34 trip Sounds like your having fun, wish I was out there with you. Some of my fondest memories are road trips with friends. As for your lack power in the hills and turns, that is why I went with th overdrive rather then the gear swap. You can shift back on the fly and bring you rpms back up into your power band. I hope you have another great day out on the open road. Tim

Re: 34 trip Lawrie, that's the same route (in reverse) that we took to get to your place coming from Lake Gairdner in 2018.

Re: 34 trip 2 Attachment(s)
Wayno, that seems a lifetime ago.
Anothe rgreat relaxing drive today down to Roma,(440klms) weather is lovely at around 29C Engine is good ,oil pressure 53 psi at 55mph and 15 -20 at hot idle Starts first push of the sstarter hot or cold, Had a nice talk with a truck driver ,he was loaded with wheat and total weight 90 tons,we passed him on a long uphill climb ,but he soomed past on the flat,we were only doing 50 or so. Dearesr fuel so far at Injune at $2.54 per litre, lucky we only needed 27 ltrs. Last August it was only $1.89. Pics are our lunch stop at the top of the range, The suspension is handling the rough stuff pretty good, and only bottomed out once, mainly because i was gawking off looking at the sceenery instead of paying attention . The rock formations on the drive today were really impressive,we were in the area of the Canarvon gorge which is special. tomorrow we are off to Canamulla ,where we will stop for a day just looking around etc. |
Re: 34 trip |
Re: 34 trip Tim, re the rear ratio, your probhably right, the 3.54 was in when we got the car,25 yrs ago.maybe i should swap it for a 3.78,i dont want to put an o/drive in ,either a mitchellwhere i would have to cut the floor pan,or a columbia, I like the nice clean look of the rear axle .
but i have taken a lot of time and $$ to get the rear quite,so I,m reluctant to take al`l apart and fit a 3.78 in,that means changing to a 6 spline on the driveshaft, and thats taken a long time on the 33 to get right(it has a 3.78) If i could get a new 3.78 with the 10 spline i might considerchanging it. lawrie |
Re: 34 trip Lawrie, thanks for taking the time to share with us mortals. I am so in awe of what you are doing. Safe travels!

Re: 34 trip I totaly get it. And if thats the only issue on this or other trips your doing great. You gotta dance with the one that brought you. Tim

Re: 34 trip 5 Attachment(s)
We went from the dearest fuel yesterday,to the cheapest so far today, yesterday $2.54 at injune today $1.96 at Roma.
Left Roma this morning around 7-30, fueled up and hit the road, first stop was Mungallala for a toilet stop, then a side track to a small historic cemetey called Dulbydilla historic cemetry, only about 20 graves, most from the 1880,s,some quite sad, like children 2 hrs old and some 3 4 and 6 yrs,one mane kicked in the face by a horse. We then stopped at a small place called Morven for smoko. there were a few road works where they were resealing the road,so drove real slow on the new tar and stones. Later stopping in Charliville for our lunch. Charliville has a unique place in the 2nd world war, as there was a huge US air base here . You can still see where the airfield buildings were. The road from Charliville to Cunamulla was nice and enjoyable as very little traffic. Took another side trip down to whats called Wyandra beach,on the river. My new speed control for the hand throttle needs more adjustment as it only gets to 50mph.still nice to give the foot a rest. Left hand door has a rattle ,but i think the part the door lock grips on may have come loose, tommorow will see.(rest day) Looks like the engine used a bit of oil as its about 1/4 in down on the stick. Immstill impressed with the engine, original from the 33 ,babbit mains std bore with flat top pistons, starts first push of the starter, hums along as sweet as, Quite as a mouse, The 34 is getting a bit dirty with dust ect from exploring Lawrie |

Re: 34 trip The car thats not perfectly clean will never called a trailer queen, and thats a good thing. This is definetly my kind of road trip.Tim

Re: 34 trip 3 Attachment(s)
Nice easy drive today (420klms)
From Cunamulla to Cobar,at the most we saw maybe 12 vehicles all day. Maybe as it was Anzac day. Lots of wildlife, emu,s goats, and kangeroos that looked in bad condition, right beside the road and never moved, they were obviously starving. We stopped at Bourke for our lunch at the local cenataph, and got acostered by the local paper ,(western star)who took pics of the 34 and wanted to know where we were from and going. We stopped at a delaplilated farm ,there was this old ute there, plus a pile burs that ended up in our thongs ,that needed removing with pliers before getting back in the car. One thing we found today is, if we have both side windows open and the rear one, plus the cowl vent , as we go over 50mph the wind will blow anything on the parcel shelf behind the seat out the windows,we had to stop twice and retrieve our hats and trip route stuff😄 Once again the little engine amazes me,smooth as ,50-55 mph, these cars must have been a revelation in the day. When checking into the motel this arvo, the indian at the checkin asked if it was a cadallic. told him it was just an old Ford, just a dirty one. Broken Hill tomorrow Lawrie |

Re: 34 trip i thnk a dodge
|
Re: 34 trip |
Re: 34 trip I think Dodge 6's were flatheads quite late, like mid 50's. The ute looks more of a GM product to me.

Vehicle is an International AS-110 Half Tonne Ute - possibly a 1957 model. Earlier models had a two piece windscreen. |
Re: 34 trip had a '50 International at one time & the fenders look the same.

Re: 34 trip Love this trip journal! Just fun to ride along with you . . .
