Pearl Harbor Day

I realize that this is off subject, but I just watched the news on TV and read the NY Times and there is no mention of Pearl Harbor. What am I missing?

Robert: You are not missing anything. Sadly, today's media generation does not relate to WW II history. It will only get worse as generations transition away from American history and tradition. Thanks for remembering that day of infamy.

Thanks Fordy, I will never forget it. I was in the 3rd grade then and when I went to school the next morning the older kids told us that the Japs were coming and were going to kill us. Some of us started crying.

Nothing on my home page on the internet either. Very sad. And if you look into Henry's involvement with the war effort it's very impressive. JMO

It is on my calendar. From my bank and telephone company. It should have been on the news. Yes, sad times.

Some mentions today on Facebook. Our son came home from school when he was in 7th grade and asked why they had to study history because "that's just stupid old stuff". My answer was if you don't some nice man will stuff your butt in the back of a C 130 and put a M-16 in your hand and you will go somewhere unpleasant. He ended up going to Iraq twice. His Pearl Harbor was 9/11. Yes, history matters but the milestones are different for the generations.

Unfortunately, that "stupid old stuff" has a very nasty habit of repeating itself.

Those that don't study history are bound to repeat it.

Re: Pearl Harbor Day

Well, for those that get up early......CBS Sunday Morning did a piece on December 7, 1941.
The bad news was that it concerned a family who's early relatives were spys for the Japanese and contributed to the attack taking place. Sadly, the current generation did the reseach and found out the true facts. And as with the current administration, Roosevelt made a change to the firing squad execution -- to time in prison.
The show should be available under CBS.

RIP to those that served on that day and later. We own them a huge debt. I read where the calendar for 1941 was the same as 2025 as in Sunday 7th December. We who are of that generation will never forget. Regards, Kevin.

Re: Pearl Harbor Day

I always tried to get WWII soldiers to talk to me. When they knew I was truly serious about knowing what they went through, they always thanked me for listening to their stories. I had a lot of WWII era hot rod dry lakes racers that were my friends. One guy was captured by the Germans with a bunch of dry lake racing, fender-less highboy Ford roadsters photos on him. He told the German investigating officer that things had gotten so bad in America that they were taking the fenders off of their cars and turning them in for scrap metal for the War. I never forgot that fender-less hot rod story.

This is how I display my ‘41 at car shows, the Hawaii plate came from eBay and so did the radio. The radio has a postage stamp size amplifier that plays music and news from December 7th 1941. I usually ask high schoolers what happened on December 7th, most don’t know. I did have one girl tell me the correct answer, she then went on to tell me it’s sad that they don’t teach history in school anymore.

My sister in law's maiden name was Day. Her dad wanted to name her " Pearl Harbor Day"
but they wouldn't let him. So she became Patricia.

Being 6 years of age at the time, some things stay in memory forever ! I too was disappointed to not see more coverage anywhere. Sad not to study history these days for younger generation .

Then it's kind of a sure thing that 911 will go away too. Think about Custer's last stand. A horrible event which upset the entire country. Then years later, in 1960, a singer Larry Vern sang "Please Mr. Custer, I don't want to go." A humorous song that lasted on popular radio. Made a funny event out of it? This will happen with the 911 event too.

Johnny Horton had a couple of big hits.' History related, back in the early 60's---'The Battle of New Orleans' and 'Sink the Bismarck'
Songs like that make people remember, or think, about what was. Too bad that no one does that today, as far as I'm aware.

On a side note, thank goodness for our missile arsenal. During WWII the guys had to load onto a bomber, fly the guantlet over enemy territory, drop their bombs and hope to get home.
8th Air Force ALONE had as many KIA's as we had in all of Vietnam. Tens of thousands of guys died during that campaign. Today we launch a missile from far far away, that can do a lot more than a 500 pound bomb plus they are deadly accurate.

There were some notable songs written after 9/11 like Toby Keith's 'Red white and Blue' and Alan Jackson's 'Where were you when the world stopped turning', but of that genre, I still like this contemporary one about my Dad's generation. They were brought up with jack shit, just to be sent off to a brutal war overseas, and those that Did make it home worked their butts off to build the America that we enjoy today. The airports, bridges, interstates, you name it. Sappy? Perhaps, so I guess I'm a sap.
