SOLD notices ???? Don't see any/many

Just wondering; I don't see the SOLD notices anymore, even going back a week or two. So no one is building cars or just can't afford anything ?? Not just this site- all over the internet- folks just shutting down.? Prices haven't really moved lower- again an occasional bargain. . What's your take? Demographics/economy ? Our local RG#10 [V8 Club] has been hit hard by Demographics and the economy- few working on cars. So just dump my 'hoard' ?? Newc

This site and the Hamb have really changed in the last few years. Parts and cars are advertised many times with no sales. Very few guys even want the desirable coupes to make into hot rods any more. 10 or 12 years ago a nice 32-34 3 window coupe would bring 100K or more. you would be lucky to break 75K now. The collapse is just getting worse and will be much more painful in 5 years. There are so few of us interested in 1930-1950 Fords anymore. Time marches on. The Model A & T guys have known this for quite some time. Alas.

Hey, wait, I am feverishly working on my project at a snail’s pace! I might get it done if I live another 20 years. Darn, wish I had bought that LB interior kit 25 years ago.

If retirement wasn’t such a full time job I might get more done on it.

today on BAT, i saw a low-mileage 1992 GMC pickup truck with some fancy badging on it with a bid (and not the final bid) of $55,000. and a recently purchased cherry low-mileage 2007 Aston Martin go (again on BAT) with a final sell price of $45,000. what's the world coming to???

i'll be glad when i'm gone! smh

I see it as a simple matter of generational familiarity. Those of us in our 60s and 70s remember the days when the cars we have were "the real classics". They were the cars our fathers drove. The cars customizers built. Today we see our children buying the cars they were familiar with. The cars of the 60s and 70s. I see prices stabilizing, (at best). I see the latter half of the century and later cars being the price toppers today. 1st gen Mustangs and Broncos selling for over $100,000. Second gen and third gen reaching close to $40,000 Our cars won't see those numbers again.

you almost had me there... lol

so i clicked on it and it turns out (i assume you know this) it's a new custom reproduction from a California custom car maker (ICON 4x4), made to look like a an old car that's been sitting out in the Arizona desert for about three-quarters of a century. i doubt if anything that's not visible was ever in a chevy.

check out the link in a previous post for more info.

...but just a hint of what's under the covers...a 6.2l LS3 v8 and an Art Morrison frame with a 4L65E four-speed automatic transmission and a Currie 9” rear end. it was commissioned by James John Liautaud, the founder of Jimmy John's (IOW, a pizza chain magnate) :)

it's more of a replicar than anything else. but it surely does look the part, eh?

i wouldn't be surprised if the new owner's getting loads of emails offering water-front property in Arizona. :)

..correction...

car was originally a 1952 chevy that was found on an air force base in New Mexico.

100% real and 100% not replicable (which is why I love patina). No one in the world has a car like mine. If I paint it, then I’m sure there are 100 just like it or more. Can’t fake this.

To my mind, the amount of enjoyment you get from your classic car is inversely proportional to the amount of time you spend worrying how much you'll get if you sell it. I overpaid when I bought my truck 20 years ago and might not even get that back now if I tried to sell it, but who cares? It brings a smile to my face every time I drive it. Just drive the damn thing and stop worrying!

So true. I used to flip old vw buses as a side gig for profit 15 or so years ago. Really took a lot of the joy out. Now I’m probably 15k underwater on my car and I couldn’t care less. About to get worse when I drop 20k on the interior!

Nothing is selling anywhere. The barn, the hamb, or facebook marketplace. Gasoline, groceries, insurance, gas and electric, and cable are sucking up all our money. People are just shutting down hoping for better times but that may not come. Even guys with lots of money are feeling the pinch. What can we do about it. I just don't know.

I've bought two things off the HAMB in the last week. Nothing here in a while.

Most of the stuff I need that I see posted on here is on the west coast or far northeast and shipping is too costly.

I am not so sure about this. I don't think that there are many folks wanting this stuff now. There aren't that many good project cars and trucks to need all of the parts guys have saved. I have offered parts on occasion for free. Just come and pick them up or pay shipping. No replies. I believe that the survivor vehicles that can be enjoyed without a big investment have become popular. It seems that the survivors are what people enjoy seeing. I wish my 36 pickup had not been painted 35 years ago. I enjoy looking at the beautiful restorations that some of our members have done. In the past ten years or so I have sold quite literally tons of prewar parts. I did this for precisely the reason you mention. That is, not leave my wonderful wife a pile to deal with.
In the past year or so there has been a noticeable shift in values. That shift? For the most part, prices are tumbling at a quicker rate than just a few short years ago.
Just two weeks ago I took an entire truck load to the land fill. Yes, there was some GOOD stuff in the back.
Still, two attempts to sell on ebay for prices that (after fees) would gain me less than a cup of coffee and to the trash they go.
I feel bad but it seems that's where the market is heading.
I have found many guys want the part(s) for nearly nothing and for me to ship it on my dime. Um, that kind of person is in the wrong hobby.
If I can't at minimum break even, to the trash it goes.

Times have changed, that’s for sure.

The HAMB has a lot of stuff for sale. I check twice a day and I would say 50% of the posts are parts or cars for sale. Not a lot of movement, but they are still asking premium prices.

I’ve sold things on line and at swap meets but certainly not at a premium. Beats scraping them and good to see them go to someone that can use them.

Re: SOLD notices ???? Don't see any/many

I decided it was time to take inventory-of my hobby
I realize I am spending more time surfing the Ford-Barn than working in my shop these days.
My "stash" of extra parts is small enough that I think I could get all of it piled on top of my work bench.
I am aware that I have many more tools than I will ever need or use again. Probably time to sell my lathe and milling machine so heirs don't need to.
I only have one vehicle, my 36 pickup. I take it for a short drive every day or two and enjoy it immensely!!!
I believe that there comes a time in a man's life that he realizes that what he perceived as assets have now become liabilities.
Life is so good and I enjoy it every day. A wealthy guy, for sure!

Re: SOLD notices ???? Don't see any/many

The problem with parts stashes is we all have them. I see good parts for sale at very reasonable prices, but have most of the same stuff myself already. At this point I am very picky about what I buy, it has to be either enough better than what I already have to make it worth shipping, or so rare I haven't yet found it (or a spare). Basically I am looking for the rare stuff these days. Examples of the stuff I am still looking for are:
  • 37-38 phaeton side curtain irons
  • original 38-39 Ford fender skirts
  • pair of 81AS cylinder heads
  • 1-1/16 bore Holley 2110 carburetor without the distributor vacuum port in the center section
  • 1937 Lincoln-Zephry cable brake backing plates with all the small parts
  • etc.

I doubt I am unique, there simply aren't many new people entering the hobby. The few family members taking over the family collection (like my brother and I did) already have several tons of parts already.
