OT: dental torque Learned something today-returned to the oral surgeon to check whether the implant he placed in the maxilla a few months ago was sufficiently locked into the bone to accept the prosthetic tooth. He whips out - a teeny torque wrench (!), applies 35 Ncm, and bob's your uncle. Also turns out you can get one of these little beauties on Amazon for $45 (maybe not the highest quality). I have a couple of Snap-on click type torque wrenches, may need to add one of these to my collection. Who knew?

Re: OT: dental torque I knew.
For the price of the total implant, they should give you the wrench. |
Re: OT: dental torque Yep, my Oral Surgeon used the tiny torque wrench on my two implants recently. They both passed the torque test. Problem now was when my Dentist went to remove the healing abutments to install the two locating pins for impression taking, he stripped out one of the healing abutments. Back to Oral Surgeon to try to remove the healing abutment and he ended up having to drill then install a tiny easy out to remove. Problem now is he ended up removing the implant so back to square one. Kind of like working on old Ford's, sometimes things just do not go as planned.

Re: OT: dental torque So true, TJ. Especially when you consider the extra pain and suffering of the "easy out"
(which is never easy) procedure! Down my way complete implant procedure is $5K for one tooth. |
Re: OT: dental torque Easy outs are neither

Re: OT: dental torque Over torqued implant CRACKED my skull. two months to heal it. FREE of charge then! Newc

Re: OT: dental torque don't know if i'd want one of those off crappy little torque wrenches even if it was free.,Tom

Re: OT: dental torque No question implants are expensive and can be problematic, but I think still better than the alternative-a bridge, or a toothless gap. Bruce, I feel for you, hope your repeat procedure works out.
After bilateral prosthetic hips and now two dental implants, I'm feeling pretty bionic Adam |
Re: OT: dental torque yes Adam, i too have prosthetic hips one done in 2013,other is a yr.old 14th this month. at almost 74 i still play disc golf again. i see you still ride motorcycles. my hips were destroyed by osteoarthritis but accelerated by riding bicycles and Mcycles over 50 yrs. oh, but sooo much fun. Tom.

Re: OT: dental torque rockfla makes a very good point. Check out the "street dentists" in India. OUCH!

Re: OT: dental torque only could stand to watch the steet DDS in India for about 30 sec. not much on sterile technique. hell my ortho surgeon that replaced my hip joints has me taking 2000mg antibiotic before any procedure including dental cleaning/procedure. Tom.
|
Re: OT: dental torque Farmertom, my left hip was done in 2004, the right in 2016, both still going strong; I selected my orthopedists very carefully-guys I had been referring my own patients to for many years. Like finding a talented machinist for your project! At 77 I still love riding motorcycles, hope to get a few more years in before the inevitable.

Re: OT: dental torque Adam,i'm curious had your ortho surgeon have you take 2000mg of antibiotic before any procedure from head to toe such as dental or colonoscopy? Tom.

These tools might work but you'll need really SMALL hands! |
Re: OT: dental torque Tom, neither the AAOS (American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons) nor the ADA (American Dental Association) recommend any pre-dental antibiotic prophylaxis any longer-this used to be a universal recommendation for many years, but has been found to have no beneficial effect. Good dental hygiene, however is imperative. Likewise, the recommendations for other procedures (colonoscopy, cystoscopy) no longer suggest pre-procedure antibiotics. As a retired doc, I've looked at this pretty carefully (but of course, consult your own doc!!). (There is a universal recommendation for antibiotics before the hip surgery itself is done, though-that's a different issue).
42 deluxe those are very cool, my grandkids would love 'em-and immediately lose them, I'm sure Adam |
Re: OT: dental torque Adam,Thank you for your insight on the matter of antibiotic prophylaxis. the first surgeon, which is now retired, wanted the antibiotic to be taken for dental and any other procdures only for a year after.the surgeon that just did my right hip a year ago wants a lifetime of antibiotics.which i'm not crazy about.it's a teaching hosp.situation, liability consideration? I may at some point talk to ortho dept about matter. ofcouse,no mention of matter discussed here on the barn. Tom.

Re: OT: dental torque Tom, you're welcome. It's always difficult when there's a divergence of opinion. Perhaps you could ask your primary to query an infectious disease (ID) specialist for their opinion, I would consider that pretty much the gold standard

Re: OT: dental torque Adam,Thanks again for your input. I do miss the m'cycles. i miss riding with my son even more as he has almost 4yr old girl and a 1yr old boy. at least he has kept his bmw m'cycle unlike myself sold my motorcycles and '30 model A tudor sedan hot rod in 1983 shortly after he was born because i thought should. well,i got back into cycling while my kids were in college.he got interested when i would ride to ames to see them at school. Tom.

Re: OT: dental torque Tom, I've enjoyed riding with my younger boy too-he stopped when he had kids (now 4 and 6) but I kept his bike for him, a CB750 Nighthawk-I refurbished it last year and put it in the "rotation" with my other 5 bikes, try to run them all every week or two, here in Nor Cal you can ride pretty much year round and I live right on California Route 1 so nice roads. I know he wants to get back to it sometime (wife permitting!). Between the cars and the bikes, it's a good thing I'm retired!

Re: OT: dental torque 1942deluxe: glad to see someone else has an original set of miniature Ford tools too, yes , they are a bit difficult to use.

Re: OT: dental torque Ray, those were given to me by a customer when I was running the Ford dealership in Ashland, PA. His son had muscular dystrophy, and I always donated to their fundraiser. We were always in very small dealerships and probably never made more than a living. We did end up knowing so many good people and families. We cared about them, and they cared about us. It was a good life....

Re: OT: dental torque Adam, hopefully a great amout of time for you and your son for some quality riding time.the" wife permitting"thing for me wasn't usally a factor. as far as m'cycles goes even my wife had her own bike when a late teen.her dad was an rotory engine mechanic wwII stationed over seas with army air core.he also worked for ford assembly dearborn her mother built planes at willow run.wifes brother also worked in ford assembly, and currently ownes and drives restored and races amc amx's.as far as m'cycles goes iv'e owned a '75 and a '76 ltd 900's,numerous Harleys, yamaha dirt bikes, road star bobber.i bought a new 2012 harley trike when my right hip started to fall apart.my last bike after first hip replacement was a 2016 harley 48 sportster.that was the most fun of them all. the two 900 kawasakis scared the crap out of me.at the same time ownership of the 48 i also had a low mi. 2003 ford thunderbird which in 2020 i traded the 48 and the t-bird for my '37 fordor deluxe sedan. Re: OT: dental torque Tom, sure sounds like you've had a nice bunch of bikes and cars! I understand about the Kawi 900's, my son bought a Honda Hornet 919 a few years bike, I rode it for 5 minutes and gave him my professional opinion: "you're going to die on this thing"-I was happy when he sold it a month later. Your '37 (in your avatar) looks just great, my favorite of all the years. Petehoovie thanks for posting that picture and menu of Irene's, I love places like that-especially with a $7 burger-that's just a dream here in NorCal!
Happy holidays all Adam |
Re: OT: dental torque A friend of mine had a kaw 750 for sale in my front yard years back. A passer by stopped with a 650 Yam to test the 750 Kaw. he left my yard quite carefully and came back pushing the Kaw. I asked whats wrong with it, he said nothing, just way to light in the front, his face looked a bit white.

Re: OT: dental torque Adam,if interested there are mor pics of my '37 on a thread i started 02/20/24 entitled "Find out more about my '37 Fordor". on page 2 Pete Hoovie enlarged em. also a few on page 1. you talked about the danger of that 919 to your son reminds me when my son first started riding i told him you have to ride like they wanna kill you. i just figured my instruction and riding while training him would work either he would change his mind or wanna throw a leg over. i guess he saw my passion and my safety practices. ofcourse he remembered my story of the kaw 900s how they scared the crap outa me.at one time while he was still single he bought a 1200 sporty powered Buell that we both worked on together. we replaced whole front end, exhaust, swing arm bearings and other various parts. esentialy safer and faster. we both had touring harleys at the same time.it wasnt to much time after us working the Buell he said this thing scares the crap outa me dad. like you with your son i was relieved!!. Tom.

Re: OT: dental torque 4 Attachment(s)
Since this thread is about torque, I figured HP is in the same general realm......When I hit my 70s I decided to limit the hp of any cycle in my stable to 10 hp max. I figured much higher than that could be unsafe. This thing is rated at 5hp, so is well within my margin of safety. The easily removed 'training wheels' are of my manufacture and serve as a rolling display stand. Since it's a 2 stroke and both cylinders fire simultaneously, it requires two coils (or a dual fire coil from a 4 cylinder kawasaki ) which I have hidden below the crankcase. It runs nicely, but I have yet to ride it. My stepson is chomping at the bit, but I DO want to stay married so I'm sure you understand. The vertical single depicted in the ad is the 3 hp version, musta been their 'kid's model'

Re: OT: dental torque GB,cool bike/contraption as us old guys would classify.looks to be you also equip with agoggle and snorkle/scuba setup because the rear drive looks more like a boat prop than an air prop.i can seriously understand why your wife may stand in the way.sorry, hope no hard feelings for boat prop humor. couldnt resist. a sound video of it running static. i'm not suggesting you ride it!! Tom.

Re: OT: dental torque Quote:
But Tom, the ad claims it's a 'scientifically designed aviation propeller'. :) |
