How do you feel about scamming me?

About three weeks ago, I was looking for a tool to remove valves from a Flathead engine. I Figured I’d buy one used so I could save a few bucks and maybe help someone out who no longer needed theirs. Win win for all. I got a response from somebody on this site, and you know who you are. you set the price. I agreed, and sent you payment. We agreed, The tool would be shipped after the check cleared. I have emailed him asking if he received the check numerous times and he continued to tell me that he did not receive it. I finally checked with the bank and the check was cleared over a week and a half ago. The response from the seller is that it has not arrived and maybe I should send an alternate payment. I was hoping there was a misunderstanding and the tool would be mailed out. I know that I’ve been scammed. Shame on me for trusting you. I’ve sold parts and shipped them all over the world and have never been taken advantage of. And I have never taken advantage of anyone on the other end. It's called mutual trust. Most car guys are good guys. You are the first. if taking the $50 means that much to you, you will get your karma. If I had bought the tool new, I would already be done with what I needed to do in my engine would be at the Rebuilders shop.

I feel your pain. Checks are no longer a safe way to make payments when buying parts, etc.

Re: How do you feel about scamming me?

When ever I send a payment to anyone that does not use PayPal I use USPS certified mail with a tracking number. It costs a bit more but worth it. The recipient has to sign for the letter. I also follow the the tracking # so that I know when it is delivered. I do not send personal checks but use USPS money orders. That way the seller does not need to wait for the check to clear and he can ship immediately.

The seller might've forgotten. Just ask your bank for a copy of the cleared check endorsed by the seller. Then show it to the seller. Go from there.

The seller might've forgotten. I DID GIVE HIM THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT. I HAVE MAILED HIM NUMEROUS TIMES AND HE RESPONDS BACK WITH SOMETHING LIKE, HE WILL LOOK INTO IT, OR CHECKING NOW, ETC.

Just ask your bank for a copy of the cleared check endorsed by the seller. Then show it to the seller. Go from there. DID THIS AND SENT IT TO HIM, HIS RESPONSE "Will check it today and get back to you", AND "Will get back to you shortly"

IF THERE WAS NO COMMUNICATION, I WOULD SAY, HE MAY BE ILL OR A FAMILY EMERGENCY, BUT HE RESPONDS WITH ENCOURAGING SHORT SENTENCES THAT MEAN NOTHING.

ANYWAY, I APPRECIATE THE INTEREST FROM YOU GUYS. I HAVE REPORTED IT TO THE POLICE. I HOPE TO HEAR THEY AT LEAST KNOCKED ON HIS DOOR.

This is not a Police matter. Your tax dollars don't support civil matters. When you have evidence that would hold up in court, then proceed in taking legal steps, including the posting his name here and with Ryan. The last thing you want is to take action that puts yourself in a defensive position.

Re: How do you feel about scamming me?

I know what you mean. I have sent parts to folks as soon as I hear they are putting a check in the mail. They get the part about the same time as I get the check. This is for small stuff. I am more careful with more costly items. Pisses you off. And you still don't have your tool. Good Luck. I had another guy who was doing work on an engine for me. He sort of stopped responding to me but he lived close by. Turned out he had cancer he was dealing with and could only work a few days a month after Chemo treatments. He did get the work done and survived. Would have been a big bummer if he never finished and I had to deal with a grieving wife to get my stuff back. Hi health was more important than my material things.

When recently I went to cash a USPS Money Order at my bank, the teller made a call to some sort of a clearing house to see if it was genuine. She told me USPS MONEY ORDERS are now being counterfeited. BE CAREFUL.

This is only an issue if you are on the money order receiving end.

I had an old friend (a car salesman) who always said: "If you can't trust your banker, your lawyer, and a used car dealer, who can you trust" LOL

I prefer PayPal and if I am wary or do not know the seller I will not do a Friends payment but will send extra $ to cover the transaction fee. It is a small price to pay to cover a loss if the seller is not honest.

Re: How do you feel about scamming me?

This is horrible. Something similar happened to me about 8 years ago (not on Ford Barn) but for 10X the amount. Go to your bank and file the necessary fraud claims. Make sure to bring any correspondence you had with the scammer to help prove your case. I did get my money back and I hope you have the same results that I did. I am sure that the $50 is not what upsets you the most, but reimbursement at least makes you financially whole. I hope the member is either banned or can be named here on this forum so that other can avoid this happening to them.

Call your bank. They will probably still want you to come in and fill out the paperwork, but that will be your only solution to getting your money back. Also, please report this member to Ryan. I think everyone reading this thread uses the classifieds and is wanting to know who this member is.

Good Luck!

In my opinion, the second paragraph would be the next step. There have been many cases of USPS letters being opened fraudulently, checks cashed or worse, modified for a greater amount.

Glenn, So true, I recently had a $1200 check (not car related) made out payable to a bank for a credit card payment. It was stolen from my home mailbox and cashed by an individual not affiliated with the bank. I found out this can easily be done using an I-phone as the signature wasn't checked even though my check was made payable to the bank, not an individual.
The bank refunded my $$. The mail person also told me there are people who follow mail trucks and then steal mail hoping to find money.

I have the tools, a bar as well as a press for valves. If you wast to pay postage both ways, I will send them to use, have a cheaper version will sell for you to put it back together.

Re: How do you feel about scamming me?

Thanks for all the support and offers to get me the tool. You guys are right, its not so much the 50.00. Its being taken, especially, from someone who is in our "group".

I am not much for paypal, I am old school. but read below:

Jeff sent me this PM and suggested i post it. "I know it's to late for you, but you should have used PayPal and this wouldn't have happened
that 3.5% they charge protects you and the seller."

I guess i should start with PAYPAL

26 Lakes has offered, in a pm, to send it for free. As well as Rodrelic has offered me to borrow them. Thanks guys. I dont want free. i will pay whats fair. Not free.

Let me see if 26 Lakes sees my PM back to him before i reach out to Rodrelic.

I will contact the bank.

The seller is from SD. once i communicate with Ryan, i will post some info.

Re: How do you feel about scamming me?

40 + years in the hot rod chassis and parts business and never had many problems. I think of the 1000's of customers who sent large sums of money to a total stranger when all they knew about me was what they read or when they met me vending at a show. The large majority of them I never met. Last week for the first time I had a customer place an order and refuse to pay until he had the parts. I thought about it a little while then thought what the hell it's only about a $1K. I sent the parts and after he saw the tracking number and checked that it was shipped he sent the check. I do not plan on making this an everyday practice. Sometimes you just gotta have faith in your fellow man.

Re: How do you feel about scamming me?

I just got scammed off E Bay for a Skat Blasting cabinet $1,800.00. I even had spoken to the seller on the phone for over a hour. This is against E Bay's rules. We had agreed on me paying his asking price and payment was made that day .I would arrange the transportation at my cost . He was to wrap the cabinet with cardboard beings it was still on its original shipping pallet. He was also to place and secure the vacuum on another pallet. When it was time for the carrier to pick up the freight, the seller claims that I was a scammer and refuses to release the cabinet nor refund my money. The seller has a 100% feed back rating . E Bay has been contacted and will see where this goes.
I just do not understand people.
Vic

Local police don't deal with mail fraud. No department anywhere is going to deal with that; they will refer you to the Postal Inspection Service.

Re: How do you feel about scamming me?

Typically, I mail everything (keys cut to code, rebuilt cylinders, locking handles etc.) out before I get paid. Once in a while I get a bad vibe after speaking to someone, so I wait for payment before I ship.
I've only been skunked by one guy. He called in a panic; he locked the only keys he had in the trunk of his 64 T Bird. I stopped my dinner cut the key and made the Post Office before it closed. I finished my now cold dinner and called him to tell him the keys were on the way. He told me he got into the trunk, so he doesn't need my key after all.
I responded with the obvious, but he refused to pay. He wouldn't even tell me if he got the key or if it worked (I used a new cutter so I was concerned on the calibration)
I won't out him on here, it was a long time ago back when I was charging $5 per key. Everyone would be shocked to find out who it was.
I hope he enjoyed the $6.72 he cheated me out of.
After at least 20 years of doing this, I can honestly say 99.9999 percent of the folks I deal with are honest. Thank You all.

Re: How do you feel about scamming me?

There are some really hard core scam artists out there. Over 10 years ago, as my buddy and I were doing our 40 deluxe woodies together, a barn member who still very occasionally posts here did a really horrible thing to a really nice guy. This guy I won't mention said he was working on 2 40 woodies and because the tops were off wanted some really tight measurements from a landmark on the floor pan to one on the top of the cowl above the windshields. Of course I sent him the measurement. Then he asked me about patterns like he was going to have someone mill the parts and asked about a specific curved piece that is the "jamb" under the rear doors. Tom (my wood artist buddy) had made all the parts for both of our cars at this point. The pattern in question was no longer needed for us but I was saving it incase someone with all original wood needed it. So after long phone discussions about all kinds of minutia regarding the woodie body I sent this to him with the understanding he would send it back. After many contacts with him stating he wasn't done with it yet I just forgot about it. This person in our always 1 hour calls asked me if I knew anyone making 40 wood. I told him about a guy I always talked to at Hershey named Russell who always had a booth up near the golf course near the National woodie club booth who did very nice work. Each year I would chat with Russell as I went to Hershey 20 years in a row. One of the last conversations I had with Russell, he told me of this person from th OHIO area that had ordered 2 complete bodies from him. Russell said he cut out the parts, DELIVERED them something like 6 hours away and still was waiting for payment. Shortly after this conversation I read where Russell had passed away. The last time I saw him in person at Hershey he was telling me he was having heart issues and was sitting down a lot. To this day it angers me that someone with no morals at all would do this to someone as trusting as Russell. I know from my own experience we spent $7500 each just for clear maple to make our bodies. I quit trying to contact the scammer who stiffed Russell as he quit responding to any inquiry. Like others here have said 99+ % of those here are good honest people, but we all need to be wary of that 1 %

A handshake between men of good character is a strong contract.
A carefully composed document by a contract lawyer is not.

I agree with you Alan. I have encountered many, many good stand-up guys in the old car journey of mine. I have also encountered a few scum bags.
I still prefer the proverbial handshake method of doing business.
Sadly, that doesn't mean too much to too many these days.
