Door weatherstripping 40 coupe Looks like there is a few different pieces of weatherstripping for the doors. A top and a bottom. Any thing else? What about the vertical rear part of the door?
On the top piece-does it go from the top hinge to the top left corner of the door? What about the vertical part on the back end of the door? The rubber I have looks pretty self explanatory for the top (the rubber is kind of L shaped and tucks into the channel) but where does it end on the rear of the door? The bottom piece…I have no idea how this installs. Any help? I’ll post photos of what I have later tonight. Looking forward to getting rid of some of my rattles! |
Re: Door weatherstripping 40 coupe Here's a very informative thread about door seals. "Kube" mentions that 1939 door seals mount a little differently than 1940.

Re: Door weatherstripping 40 coupe There is also a piece that goes on the front part of the door around the hinges.

Re: Door weatherstripping 40 coupe Only thing sealing the rear edge is the upholstery welting.

There is a front door seal as TJ had mentioned. That piece is quite self-explanatory. The bottom seal is actually fastened to the floor with screws. If you purchase reproduction sills, I suggest you get the ones offered with the stainless and rubber as a unit. You will need to trim the rubber a bit to gain proper length. The sill plates have slots so they can be adjusted inward / outward as necessary to make a good seal against the door. When you receive the repro sills, roll the rubber over the sill and bind it in that position for a month or two. That will create a memory to the rubber and it will then fit so much better upon installation. |
Re: Door weatherstripping 40 coupe Thanks yall. So is weatherstripping glue used on the top seal and front hinge seal?

Re: Door weatherstripping 40 coupe I stepped up and bought the one piece door seals now offered by Drake. At $225 I may have been suckered? After taking my 40 to town this morning with it's wind noise I will take the time to install the Drake seals and report back. Package isn't very big so we'll see?
|
Re: Door weatherstripping 40 coupe Yep, I’ve always used the 3M black weather ship adhesive. I love that stuff. I did not know that one piece door seal existed. I will check that out. Please let me know how you like it. It certainly is a little pricey. But anything to get the noise down so my kids will actually ride in the car is helpful.

Re: Door weatherstripping 40 coupe My sad experience with the '40 hinge seal packaged and distributed by Vintique:
The seal is about 24" long but was stuffed into a plastic sleeve package about 18" long. Rubber looked like a snake and had taken a set. Couldn't install it. Hung the two rubbers from the garage rafters for a year. Never did relax. They went in the trash. My car is still missing those seals. |
Re: Door weatherstripping 40 coupe Jay, I wonder if Dennis Carpenter's product is better?

Re: Door weatherstripping 40 coupe I ordered the drake one piece seals as well as the lower seal with stainless already attached. I only have one of the old stainless pieces so figured that was the way to go. Thanks yall!

Re: Door weatherstripping 40 coupe I'm trying to picture how a one-piece seal would work.
Originally, one seal was glued to the body and the other seal to the door. |
Re: Door weatherstripping 40 coupe 7 Attachment(s)
"Kube" p[oses a good question. A one piece seal would have to be attached to the surface of the A-pillar and would easily be distorted yielding a poor fit. (I think.) Not a good idea.
Perhaps this might be helpful. Here's the DRAKE door seals. One goes on door from bottom of door hinge to door bottom. The other follows the contour of the door and goes from the top of the door hinge and on the contour of the body. Bottom door seal also shown.(Floor pan bolt in last photo is not stock.) |

"I believe ours is made by uss..." Not totally reassuring, but I will take a chance and order from Carpenter. Thanks for the suggestion. |
Re: Door weatherstripping 40 coupe Got the one piece seal in the mail. Does it attach to the door or the body?
|
Re: Door weatherstripping 40 coupe no instructions?
|
Re: Door weatherstripping 40 coupe Nope, no instructions which was strange because a lot of their other rubber came with instructions.
|
Re: Door weatherstripping 40 coupe As shown in the photos above, there are 3 seals that completely seal the door opening of the 40 coupe. One seal for the door, another seal for the top of door and the seal with the metal strip that screws in the floor pan at the bottom of the door.
Look here: https://www.dennis-carpenter.com/car...ng/door-seals/ Please post a photo of the "one piece" seal you rec'd from Carpenter. |

Re: Door weatherstripping 40 coupe Thanks Pete. I think this concept of a one-piece seal is a bit misleading. You BIG photos should help clarify.

Re: Door weatherstripping 40 coupe 3 Attachment(s)
Yep that helps a ton. I figured out the one piece seal. I have not installed it yet. But after I actually took a few minutes to look at the piece and hold it up, it’s very clear and evident it is to be glued to the door. I will install tomorrow. It looks like a very nice piece. It did come with both sides too.
Again, these photos are NOT installed so it is not sitting as it will. I will get after photos when done. Pretty straightforward. https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/attac...9&d=1713842043 http://https://www.fordbarn.com/foru...9&d=1713842043 https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/attac...1&d=1713842043 https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/attac...0&d=1713842043 http://https://www.fordbarn.com/foru...1&d=1713842043 |

Re: Door weatherstripping 40 coupe Do more research before you install that top door weather stripping that runs along the top of the door and then curves downward. It does not appear to be an OEM piece. Plus, I doubt if your door will be able to close completely.
I bought my completely original 40 coupe in 1963 from original owner and that style weather stripping was not used. To the best of my knowledge 1940 Fords did not come with the top of door weatherstripping piece (shown in the last 2 above photos) that curves downward at the top corner of the door and then runs down the outer edge of the door. Perhaps others will chime in and provide more info. |

There was no seal like that in 1940 and just because Drake claims it to be "improved" doesn't mean it's any good and / or will fit without complications. Me? Why try to reinvent the wheel? It's a '40 Ford. Yes, it's not airtight like a new car. It's a '40 Ford. |
Re: Door weatherstripping 40 coupe Thanks "Kube" for the verification and sharing your knowledge. I can only imagine how messy an installation and ill fitting that "new and improved" door seal will be. Plus, it has the wrong configuration and the door will probably not close completely.
|
Re: Door weatherstripping 40 coupe Thanks y’all. I will tape it into place to get a feel for how it will fit. I will also tape into place the original style as I have both on hand and decide what I like better. The messy glue was definitely a concern of mine already.

Re: Door weatherstripping 40 coupe A little tip for removing the old adhesive....Soften it with a solvent similar to wax and silicone remover. Once it's kinda gooey, sprinkle on a good coat of sawdust. The semi-dissolved adhesive will stick better to the dust than it will to the painted surface. Then you can roll it off with your fingers.

Re: Door weatherstripping 40 coupe Please don’t hate me for what I’m about to say. Haha. First I taped up the stock style seals. while they were fine, my doors were still rattling a little bit when closed and I didn’t feel they were tight enough. Yes I adjusted the door catch and to get the doors not rattly, I had to adjust them in so much that the door didn’t close flush.
Next I taped the drake one piece seal in. I’ve installed a lot of rubber in various cars throughout the years. Let me just say I was impressed! They fit very nice and the doors close o so perfectly when installed. So, I installed the one piece seals. I went easy on the glue in case I change my mind later. Right now the doors are closed with tape holding it in while it dries but I’ll get photos tomorrow. The size was perfect, the rubber is oh so soft and squishy I wish I could sleep on it. The doors when closed are very nice and solid now. No hate on the original style but for me these just seemed to work better. I’ll try to keep this updated with my feedback as they “break in” and as I use the car. I drive it to get exhaust tomorrow and am excited to see how many fewer rattles I have. As always, I so very much appreciate y’all’s advice, criticism and help throughout all of my threads. |
Re: Door weatherstripping 40 coupe Glad it worked out well. It's photo time.

Re: Door weatherstripping 40 coupe If it's a one piece It should go on the door I would think. Tim
