Cadillac 331 in a Ford

I am looking for a set of motor mounts to put a 1950's Cadillac 331 in a 35-40 Ford. I know Hurst made these in the past.

I've never seen one but I've heard them referred to as "Fordillacs".

Re: Cadillac 331 in a Ford

Its a near bolt in if you have the starter housing that moves the starter to the right hand side. Setup requires an adapter plate and pilot bearing, behind the engine and Hurst mounts for the front as well as the starter adapter. This assumes you are using the Ford trans.

Try emailing Matt at iron trap garage, I think they just put a 331 Caddy in a ‘38

They have lots of parts for sale on their website, also check out their YouTube.

Ditto on the starter relocation... Cad engines in Fords was a very common application during the mid '50's..

I called Belmonts Rod and Custom. Very nice people, unfortunately they do not have the motor mounts for the 331. They do have them for the 1964 Cadillac engine 390, I think?

I am going to make them with the help from a good friend. Anyone else want some? Let me know. Thanks to all for the response!

Several years ago if my memory is right I saw one of these conversions in AZ. I think it may have been owned by Jackie Howerton? Nice green 40 with patina.

Re: Cadillac 331 in a Ford

When I was first on the H.A.M.B., I saw a link to "Belmont's" site. At that time, they had the entire Offenhauser catalog on it. Turned out that it was just for reference only, but it drove me crazy for a while, because just about any Internet search for old speed equipment ended up there. They had none of the old stuff.

I haven't been led that far astray since a certain stripper back in '92.:D

Krylon32 03-08-2024 02:01 PM

Re: Cadillac 331 in a Ford

Offenhauser used to a good source but since the family sold the business the new owners are not the best at running the business. Availability of parts has diminished and prices have increased significantly.

Re: Cadillac 331 in a Ford

A pair of scissors, some cardboard, a hack saw, a drill motor, some 1/4 inch plate and you can have some mounts far superior to what you can buy.

I did one in "55" with a modified 37 LaSalle transmission. That thing could be shifted so fast it sounded like a Lenco.

I put a 331 in my 40 in 2019, I got the hurst style mounts new from Mitchell Motor Works. Not sure if Mitch is still in business but his number was 415-806-4345 and his email was [email protected]

Thank you for the tip! Mitch was super guy. He still has some of the ones he made. $139 plus shipping, mine are on the way shortly.
Also check out "Speed Gems" for different hot rod applications

Thanks for the tip. He did not have the motor mounts. But he listed an original Cadillac 331 bellhousing. Since I am installing a Laselle transmission, this was a rare and great find.

Hey Mike, add a picture of your blue Coe for an avatar. Then create some albums in your User CP "photos and albums" and upload pictures of some of your big iron. I am sure guys here would love to see your 39 too.

I do not enter very often. I bought a pair for a Cad install in my 26 Ford coupe. If I remember correctly I looked under Hot Rod or Ra$ Rod Cadillac engine mounts. Very seldom
do you find a Hurst set. Good luck

Just sent my early 51 and 52 Cadillac distributors to Charles Schwindler in New York. He is going to modify/update them with later fly weights and vacuum advance to use manifold vacuum. I will try to post some photos when I get them back.

Did you find your bell housing to do the install ? Years ago I bought one believing it would fit my '52 engine , but it may be for the later engine that you have . I'm still looking for an early style adapter . Maybe we could trade ?
