I made a YouTube video of my 19 year old daughter trying out my 1954 Meteor (has a flathead) with a 3 on the tree transmission. Anyone who has taught their kids to drive a stick shift, or even if you remember what it was like to learn to drive one, will enjoy this video.

If you already know how to drive it is not(?) hard to learn. When i was growing up we all learned driving around in a circle on the back acreage. But I had an issue with some one
who could said he could drive a standard transmission car with a floor shift but not a column shifter

Great video, thanks for sharing it. While not three on the tree, a long time ago I taught my daughter to drive three on the floor in a super-original '32 v8 Tudor Sedan. With 4:11 gears, they're ideal for the purpose of mastering the clutch.

When I was in high school in the early 60's all of the Driver's Ed. cars were 3-on-the -tree. Some avoided the behind the wheel training just because of that. Most of us guys looked forward to it!

Great video, fun to watch. But please put seat belts in it. I put them in my '36 back in 1965. Some originality one has to overlook for the sake of safety.

You are a very lucky father and she is a very lucky daughter. Great video.

I didn't know "Nardy knobs", were illegal in Canada. I would be more than willing to let her drive my 53' Mercury convertible. Unfortunately, she might find it a bit boring, since it has a Nardy knob, power steering, power brakes, 4 way power seats, power windows and is an automatic (all factory (except the Nardy knob) original options in 53').

I did teach my daughter to drive a manual transmission, but it was on a Jeep. It still comes in handy, since she drives a manual 2012 Mini Countryman All 4 on a daily basis (when she is not using the paddle shifters!). Interesting point is, that her husband can't drive her car, since he never learned to drive a manual

I can't wait to teach my 2 daughters to drive a manual transmission. A column shift is on the agenda as well.

I have twin daughters, now 38, and one of them wanted to buy a manual shift Mercedes coupe but she couldn’t drive it. We spent a couple of days for her to learn how to drive my old Suzuki Samurai and wallah, she picked up the essentials right away. The other daughter can only drive an automatic to this day!

My daughter is learning a manual right now, but i'm waiting on her to master the little Honda she is learning on before trying any of my old stuff.

Both my '40 and '53 shift smooth as silk with the 3 on the tree. The Chevy pickup I learned on was the opposite. I remember if I shifted it too fast 1st to 2nd sometimes it would lock up and I would have to get out, open the hood, and reach down and yank on the levers on the steering column to get them out of the bind.

What a great and pleasant daughter - very accomplished and quick to understand. She reminds me of my granddaughter. You are to be commended for your patience.

The last annual inspection on my ‘41, I had to teach the car jockey at the garage how to find the gears on the tree, he was pretty efficient with the clutch, he was the only one allowed to drive the car upon the lift.

Nice vid! I remember teaching my wife and two children to drive stick. The Two things I tell all new drivers are : "NEVER FOLLOW TOO CLOSE and " EXPECT EVERTONE ON THE ROAD TO DO THE WRONG THING" Follow my rules and you should be okay!

Kirkf, I used a GoPro, with a homebuilt suction cup mount on the windshield. Made it from an old Garmin GPS mount, and I like it better than the official GoPro suction mount. I just wish I could find a decent microphone, the built in mic is pretty good, but you may have noticed some of the vocals were difficult to hear in this video. That's after I tweaked the audio in editing too. Just having a window open in the car while driving messes up the sound.

I have more videos coming this winter in regards to repairs to the 54 Meteor. New exhaust valves, Borg Warner Overdrive install etc. Not working on cars right now so I have time to edit!

One of the things I'm proud of is that I taught both my daughter and son to drive my '90 Nissan pickup. Unfortunately the Nissan rotted away to nothing. The only thing I have left with stick is my '63 Chevy "4 window coupe" but that's a bit more of a handful what with non power drum brakes and manual steering. Maybe when I get my Model A on the road they'll be able to drive that.

You might want to go with clip on Microphones. Or clip one to the headliner above you. They are cheap enough and you can find them on craigslist. My old Black Hero 3+, has a jack on the side. If you have a newer one, you will have to go another route to get the jack:

As to wind noise, you can always wrap the mic's in a "dead cat microphone cover". When I did my movie, on the highway, in a convertible with the top down, I used a mic, wrapped in a dead cat, attached to a suction cup,stuck to the lower trunk deck lid of the car. (I sent you PM with the utube address.) The camera mount is just two suction cups from Harbor Freight with PVC pipe ans hose clamps.

Love the movies. Hopefully you have started something, where we will see more movies of their kids driving their cars!

PS

You could always clip the mic's to the sun visors, they will still be out of the camera shot, yet close to you for better sound quality.

Yeah I'm thinking of getting the Rode Videomicro for my GoPro 7, might have to wait until after Christmas as I'm buying others gifts right now. Found a couple videos demonstrating the difference with those mics and it's amazing how well they work. I think part of the problem with the built-in mic, is it amplifies a lot of sound through the camera body, and camera mount. The windshield probably absorbs a lot of sound and the mic just amps it up. I have a bigger camera with a dead cat mic on it and it's fantastic, and totally eliminates wind noise so I can't wait to upgrade the GoPro.

I already knew how to drive automatic. My aunt taught me to drive stick in my grandma's 53 Ford 3-on-the-tree 6-banger. Rabbit-hopped it a couple times before I got the hang of it. The thing about stick is each one is a little different.

I guess I learned to drive on a jailbar Ford with four on the floor. I remember my dad referring to the "H" pattern for the gears. Its been a long time and I don't recall it being all that difficult. Of course any serious down shifting involved 'double clutching'. Regulating your foot on the gas with the one on the clutch to take off without staling the engine or slipping the clutch too much took some practice. Later on I graduated to "three on the tree" on a neighbour's Dodge pickup. It seems funny having to teach someone how to do a task that I can do myself without even thinking.

Wonderful video. Such a beautiful family. Love that your girls are interested in the old bucket lol. I have a 47 Ford along with 2 daughters both 15 and 11. I hope one of them takes interest in the 47 as it was passed down from my dad to me. I would love to pass my 47 to one of my daughters so that it stays in the family.
