100° in St. Louis this week...

A local top and interior shop needs to see my '35 for an estimate. A need headliner. This week the temperature hovers between 95° and 100 degrees. The liquids are all topped up. Is it safe to try to travel 8 miles on city streets?

Those temps are usually mid after noon.

Do it first thing in the morning, so you can be there when they open, then head home right after the estimate. It shouldn't take long. The engine will cool down while they are doing the estimate, for the drive back home. If you can leave the hood at home, so much for the better.

I can't see where you are located, but it has to be allot flatter than here in Colorado.

Depends on your car. Depends on the condition of the cooling system, etc. Even when new those temperatures, and slow traffic, might have been pushing its capabilities.

Edit: just saw Merc Cruzer's reply. Good idea to just make the trip in the morning before it reaches 95-100 degrees.

Did people not drive there cars in 1935 when it was hot? Go for it.

Thank you all. This is my Grandpa's car. He bought it new in 1935. I feel I should be beyond careful. An earliest opportunity in the morning is what I'll take. And take water, and coolant with me. Good smart advice.

Henry,
I’m in st Charles . We have a small early ford v8 group in St. Louis in addition to a very active model A club that has some v8 guys in it as well. I do flathead ford work so let me know if you need help.

And water in a cooler, for you too.

Hi Everyone, HenryCarl, when was the last time Grandpa's car went out for a ride? Have you tried a test run lately? Eight miles isn't far but then it can also be six miles on a rollback.

I've found lifting the hood sides when parking-up can help the vehicle cool off before the next leg of a trip, if it's getting back home we're thinking about.

If the coolant is actually topped off and you don't have much time behind the wheel of this car, you may find the vehicle wants to find the fluid level on its own. Polite way of saying to expect some reports of coolant on the windscreen of your chase vehicle, or maybe you see it coming out of your hood sides.

I check the coolant more frequently than the fuel and carry (both) fluids to add when needed. Just covering the tops of the tubes, maybe 10mm above, in the morning is a starting point for my '35 small top radiator equipped car.

I lived in St. Looey in 1935. It was hot then also along with 100% humidity and it didn't cool off much at night. At night we used to go out on the road to Lambert Field and find a low spot to park and listen to WLW in Cincinnati. It was at least 10 degrees cooler there.

Missed Lindbergh by only eight years - no wonder you are such a trove of valuable information.

8 miles in the city no sweat, 8 miles on the I35 loop another thing.

If age has anything to do with it (it DOES NOT), Pete is old enough to be registered #2 on the current FordBarn....as only the SECOND member to register right after Ryan.
