Can you use repainted license plates in Texas?

They look great.

Enjoy.

"Can you use repainted license plates in Texas?"

If they are painted correctly using the proper colors, YES.

Hey wait, I was going to ask that.
I did find a very nice one on E-bay last year for $25 and bought it, it would not fit into our mail box...so our post man...in his infinite wisdom...folded it so it would fit, and stuffed it in the box.
Yeah, he destroyed it
I have another, but it does need restoring, thinking about giving it a try this Winter

Leave it to the P.O. to mess it up

Your restored 1931 Texas Plates look good.

Are you kidding us? He actually folded it?? I'd take it to the post office and tell them they owe you a refund for it. People never cease to amaze me!!

Re: Restored License Plates

That is one reason why I pay for a Private Post Office Box. It seems that the Delivery Riders couldn't care less about the deliveries, as long as all items are delivered. With a Post Office Box, my Magazines don't get folded or wet. Also, when we go on Holidays, all Mail is safe at the Post Office until we return.

Restored Plates are NOT allowed in California. Must be original paint.

Do they actually look at them that close? Why and who would be able to tell if they were restored or original?

Re: Restored License Plates

If so, that is a newer requirement. I bought restored plates (1930), about 14 years ago, and they did closely examine them for using the matching color, etc., but they were approved then.

TerryH 05-21-2022 09:34 AM

Re: Restored License Plates

Yes they did examine them closely. They measured the size and compared the color to original. They used a book that apparently had each year listed, likely with color photos of each year.

Re: Restored License Plates

In Calif. it depends on the person behind the counter looking at the plate. I had my friend go to the DMV and one lady looked at them and said no when he checked in. When his number came up another lady took care of he and she never looked at the plates. So it depends on who is looking

Re: Restored License Plates

I think the states that have that requirement want to avoid crude and sloppy restorations. If the plate is well done and colors closely match it should be OK.

Great looking restoration.

Re: Restored License Plates

Two out of three of my YOM plates were restored, one of them I did the restoration myself and even used clear coat on it. Never had a problem with them getting registered in California.

Does anyone know who does fiberglass recreations of your plates? In case you lose one or don't want to damage the originals.

My three antique cars have restored CA plates. Never had DMV refuse them.

I don't know about fiberglass, but licenseplates.tv makes aluminum replica plates that are very close to originals in size, color and fonts. They no longer make California plates due to problems with the state DMV, but I think they still do most other states.

A number of years back I bought a pair of NOS 1928 California plates and registered them to my car. They were, of course, perfect. But after a couple of years of exposure to the elements (despite being garaged) the paint deteriorated severely. They looked awful. I considered having them restored, but instead I bought a pair from licenseplates.tv (before California shut them down). They looked perfect. I figured the odds of being pulled over for using non-original plates was close to nil. Who would know? I think the main reason the state stepped in was that people were registering for conventional plates with modern number systems, then having "vintage" plates stamped with the new numbers. That is definitely illegal. In my case, the number on the replica plate matched the YOM registration. The only way to tell the replica from a restored original was to check the metal -- aluminum versus original steel.

In any event, when I sold the car I put the deteriorated but original plates back on.

Take your OP plate to DMV for inspection. After it is done then you restore them.

These restored plates were approved in Southern California by the local DMV
