Home made tool that works really well. I wanted to tear down and rebuild an early Ford 3 speed top loader. I decided to invest an hour or so and knock up a simple pair of brackets to act as a stand. I'm part way through the rebuild and can say they work really well. They are made from 1" angle iron with just one weld per side.
You can use it down flat: https://i.postimg.cc/vBz22b9G/20210201-183443.jpg Or up on end: https://i.postimg.cc/L58CrwBL/20210201-183500.jpg The short legs allow the input shaft to be clear of the bench when on end. https://i.postimg.cc/tJvSyk2f/20210201-183514.jpg It will also stand up on the back end when the case is empty, which can be useful. It was an idea I wanted to try, I tried it and it worked really well so I thought I'd share. Mart. |

Re: Home made tool that works really well. Great idea thanks for sharing we can always use a extra hand. But now it looks like you need to build a bigger work bench
|
Re: Home made tool that works really well. Then he'd have to build a bigger shed.

Re: Home made tool that works really well. Thanks for all the replies, fellas. Sometimes the simpler the better. Unfortunately a bigger shed would need a bigger garden and I'm maxed out.
|
Re: Home made tool that works really well. Ha ha, good job Mart.
|
Re: Home made tool that works really well. I made a bracket to mount my '51 Ford transmission on a regular engine stand. At my age, I need some mechanical advantage repositioning it and the stand facilitates that nicely. I'd post a picture, but it's in Minnesota and I'm not.;)

Re: Home made tool that works really well. Great idea, I think I have an angle iron bed frame laying around somewhere.
|
Re: Home made tool that works really well. Mart, that looks good. I went in a different direction copying the Vern Tardel version since I had a short piece of threaded pipe that fits into the drain hole and a pice of 2"x3" rectangular tubing. Horizontal or vertical positioning.

Re: Home made tool that works really well. Maybe MacVP will share his stand for rebuilding transmissions.

Mart-
I made a stand too, but yours is better since you can stand the transmission on end. |
Re: Home made tool that works really well. 1 Attachment(s)
That’s cool. This is what I use because it seems I never have enough space on my bench .

Re: Home made tool that works really well. To be honest I might have made it so it fits the engine stand, but I have an engine sitting on the stand at the moment.
The last time I rebuilt a 3 speed, I just had it sitting in a wide 5 wheel! Mart. |
Re: Home made tool that works really well. Could you give a few dimensions of the stand to get me started to build one? Thanks!
|
Re: Home made tool that works really well. Short legs are 3-1/4"
Uprights that bolt to box are 10-1/4" Feet are 15" Allow an extra 7/8 for the folded over parts on the short legs. Mart. |
