Veterans day (in the US) was originally Armistice Day, remembering the ending of hostilities in WW1 Novermber 11 1918.
My grandfather, Jay A Wescott Sr, served in the 65th Coast Artillery and was deployed to France in 1917-1918. He was wounded by gas at Verdun. I have attached a scan of a page of his photo album. He passed when I was an infant. |
Re: remembrance day I too have photos of my grandfather who was in the first lot to land at Gallipoli ,35 days there and wounded, also fought in Pashendale .
The pics show him and mates on leave in London,with a note on the back saying who his mate was, and he was killed 1 week later, Lawrie |

I've probably posted this one of my dad before but this was at training camp in Shilo, Manitoba, 1941 so that Ford woodie wagon would have been fairly new at the time. He went on to see some exciting times in the 18th anti-tank battery. First vehicle he learned to drive on was Ford army trucks. Later graduated to gun towers and Valentine/Archer tanks. He had some stories to tell.

Re: remembrance day Veterans day as said originally Armistice Day. The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Thankfully Veteran's Day is still 11-11 not moved to the second Monday in November for a 3 day weekend to facilitate mattress sales. Lest we not forget all Veterans, not just from the US but from Europe, Australia, and New Zealand and any others I might have missed.

Re: remembrance day I am just now reading the book "Never Call Me a Hero" by Jack Dusty Kleiss, who flew a Dauntless dive bomber in the battle of Midway. Very good read and he also drove a 40 Ford. These guys never fail to amaze me with the things they did.

Re: remembrance day My Great Grandfather, and both of his brothers. ALL went to Gallipoli. All went into the trenches in France. ALL came home. Amazing.

Yes they ere amazing! My father in law was a carrier Hellcat pilot in the South Pacific. Shoot down twice, never injured, 4 air to air kills and 23 bombing missions. |
Re: remembrance day Yes, less we forget. I had several uncles ans cousins that fought in that war. Thank god they all came back.
