40 turn signal options?? I’d like to add some type of signals, I’d like others to not hit me when I’m driving.
What are my options? I have 4 sets in a box that I have no idea what is what yet. I could use any of these, or buy a set complete/new. What do my ford barn experts think? Re: 40 turn signal options?? IMHO, unless you you've tested these units and have their wiring schematics, it's probably easier just to buy a new one complete with instructions.

Re: 40 turn signal options?? The issue with many of the older units is with the rear lights. Seven wire systems were designed to allow the rear factory housings (with dual filament sockets and bulbs) to provide turn/brake/tail lights. Lesser set ups (those with 4 to 6 wires) need either additional light set housings on the rear or the installation of several relays to support all those same functions. Finding a schematic is a Google search. With the schematic, testing isn't a big deal.

Re: 40 turn signal options?? Sometimes "old is not gold". Use a new kit with up to date and improved technology, like LEDs.

Re: 40 turn signal options?? Check this link. Installed on a 36. Easy install.
http://turnswitch.com/Turnsignal.htm Great people to work with! |
Re: 40 turn signal options?? For about $20-30(on e-Bay) you can buy the Signal Stat 900 type switch. It comes with a complete wire diagram and you can use your existing parking lights and brake lamps. I have one on my '40 and it works good. If you don't want the column type switch you can buy a toggle type switch to hide under the dash from American Auto Wire or Kwik-Wire.

Re: 40 turn signal options?? TJ that looks to be 12v. I still have the original 6v POS ground

Re: 40 turn signal options?? Not all of the new 12v units can be converted to 6v. You are wise to check before buying.

Re: 40 turn signal options?? The 12v LED units are not voltage flexible and are +/- sensitive.

Re: 40 turn signal options?? I think the confusion came in on the LED part. LEDs will be voltage specific, where the one tj was referencing is not LED so changing the bulb works

Re: 40 turn signal options?? I got the Sears Allstate like in your last pic., yard sale 10 bucks. It was new in box with instructions for postwar Ford. Works fantastic, built it into my V8 jalopy and cancel works and adjust easy. Any big truck is using easy to fit and hook up switch, but the Allstate seems period correct. I have several old timers and prefer to resurrect as opposed to using cheap modern stuff made on other side of planet.

Re: 40 turn signal options?? Forget turn signals on your 40. The kid behind you on his cell phone will never see them same as your brake lights . Just continue to use your arm

Re: 40 turn signal options?? LED's and light bulbs are two different things. They share very little in common except turning electricity into light.

Re: 40 turn signal options?? Make sure the bulbs are a large enough draw to operate the flasher. I lost what was left of my hair trying to get the lights to flash

Re: 40 turn signal options?? You could use any of those original flasher switches but need to test and power up the switch on your work bench to sort out which wire is witch. 6 or 12 volt will work but may have to replace the pilot bulb to suit. Of course the flasher unit would have to be the correct voltage also. Easy to do really. Using the rear stop lights as blinkers is very dangerous in my opinion because they are hard to see, and also when one blinker is flashing you only have one stop light working. Separate amber blinker lights is the only way to be seen. Isnt it better to be seen than some old codger running up the backside of your treasure. I use Harley Davidson chrome amber flasher lamps mounted down on the bumper front and rear on my 34 Ford. Also dont wire the power wire to the flasher can through the ignition switch so that the ignition does not have to be on to work the flashers if you brake down on the side of the road. Regards, Kevin.

Re: 40 turn signal options?? 2 Attachment(s)
Found it at the bottom of the drawer, kinda rough but...
A lot of other cool stuff too. The colors may pertain to other units as well I just made a new harness and will need it so good timing |

I used this system http://turnswitch.com/Turnsignal.htm in my 40 with LEd lights. Works great. I chose the under dash toggle but I often think that the column switch would be much more convenient. You have to pay attention to and remember to cancel the blinker quickly after making a turn or you may have someone turning in front of you.Setting the cancel time is adjustable. If you turn a signal on while your brake is on the blinker will not time out while waiting at the intersection or stop light while you wait and the timer starts up again when you let off the brake. |
Re: 40 turn signal options?? I have installed turn signals in quite a few old Fords.
My method had 2 required parameters. 1- It had to be self canceling. 2- It had to look like it came from the factory. I used a 53 to 56 F100 column tube with turn signal switch intact. I used 32/50 bulbs in the tail lights. NO problem seeing them if you were qualified to drive. I used the parking or cowl lights for the front turns. Some cars required minor machine work on the steering shaft to adapt the cancellng cam. |
