Painted My First Car (well, parts of one!) 15 Attachment(s)
Been working hard on the wife’s 40 Pickup and after prepping the bed, rear fenders, tailgate, and front cover panels, it was time to shoot some paint. Other than spray bomb, I have never painted a car. My cab was painted about 12 years ago and the paint was still viable from TCPGlobal, 39/40 Ford/Merc Blue Poly with flattener. The flattener used back then is no longer being made so I had to source a replacement - PPG SU4985. But, there was no spec data using the old acrylic enamel paint I was using. But, I had to primer sealer the items first so I got in some practice .....
Somehow I screwed up the mix ratio ending up with a lot of orange peel. I stayed up late getting most all of it sanded out and finished up the next morning. The TCPGlobal paint is an 8:1 mix and the 1 is hardener - no reducer. But the flattener ratio was my next problem. So, I mixed up a little at 50% and it hardly dulled up. Next easiest increase was to put equal amounts of paint t and flattener - 100%. The result was much better than I ever expected .... The look and feel of the paint, almost an industrial feel suits the theme of the truck and touch ups will be a breeze. This stuff is simple and a no brained for the guy shooting at home. The color did not match what was put in the cab so long ago - but there are spots that need repair so I will reshoot the cab. Having fun In Da Burg! |

Re: Painted My First Car (well, parts of one!) That looks excellent! I have always liked flatting paste and it's effects. You did a really good job with your mix and I can't wait to see some pics of the finished pickup.

Re: Painted My First Car (well, parts of one!) Good job!
My first paint job was about 40 years ago. The guy at the paint store said that the closest to a perfect paint job was just before the paint runs. .....It was ALMOST perfect. |
Re: Painted My First Car (well, parts of one!) one of my old painter friends always said " if you dont have any runs, you dont have enough paint on it"

Re: Painted My First Car (well, parts of one!) Man that looks great. Maybe you can come down here to Florida and help me paint my '35 pickup.

Nice work on your paint job. |
Re: Painted My First Car (well, parts of one!) Thank you - there wasn’t anymore more surprised than I at the result!
|
Re: Painted My First Car (well, parts of one!) Tom - congrats. Any issues with the dust - you did wet down the area ?
|
Re: Painted My First Car (well, parts of one!) Not a bit - just a couple bugs here and there. I also had a fan running which helped keep the dust down and the hvlp gun really cuts down on the airborne spray as the paint is mostly on the car .....

I prepped the cab and shot it in color after I scuffed it all down and primer sealing anything that wore through the layer of paint or went to bare metal until I ran out of flattener ....
|
Re: Painted My First Car (well, parts of one!) I give up - depending on the camera orientation some pics will not portray straight here ..... grrrrr

JSeary - thanks for making my pics so us old folks won’t need a neck brace! Lol! So is there a trick to doing that? If I rotate them for Fordbarn, they are crooked for everything else .... |

I got some more painting done - just some pics as a way of an update. Paint came out nice, same as the rest of the truck, but once I took the tape away some of the old paint peeled off with it in multiple places. Fortunately, if I do not include the flattener, I can duplicate the old color of the cab which the interior of the cab still is.
The firewall I just painted satin black - easy to touch up and maintain. All that is left now is the front fenders and the hood to get into color ..... I am still having waaaay too much fun ..... |
Re: Painted My First Car (well, parts of one!) Ok - so it looks like every time I reduce the size of a pic in order for the advanced management to accept it, it turns it around on me. So sorry boys .....

Unfortunately there were several spots that when the tape was removed it took off the paint underneath - probably 6-7 places. If my paint is mixed with no flattener, it matches the interior as that is how it was painted by my buddy when he did the cab for me. Just waiting on a small touch up spray gun to get these spots ...
There is one spot pictured in my previous post and here are three more .... It’s all part of the fun, right?! Lol! |
