With the drama here in Australia getting a gl4 gear oil for the trans,could I use a full synthetic gear oil?

Penrite does have some other ones that would be more like GL1 T90, T140

I had a chat with penrite today their 85- 140 mineral you could use in a pinch its is GL5 however they said their EP addative is not as harmful as other manufacturers . It's kind of " in the past things used to be..... But now ...." The tech expanded ( if I understood him correctly ) that any corrosive problems if any come with a lot heat to make it happen. I'd just go with the mild EP.

Lawrie, Castrol still sells GL4 gear oil. Available at Hansen Road fuel depot.

I use SAE-50 100 grade ashless dispersant aircraft engine oil (Aero Shell W100 perferred). It is equivalent to SAE-90 gear lube and it works great in my Borg Warner electric overdrive cars. Just make sure it has no Lycoming TCP additive in it. It's available in straight mineral or detergent (ashless dispersant). I prefer the detergent. Change the oil per manufacturers recommendations or once a year if you prefer.

The Bell 47 helicopter engines use the old vertical engine gear case and the gears in there last for quite a few overhauls before showing any signs of wear. I've used it in my Harley Davidson transmissions & engines for years and never had a problem due to lubricants. The synthetics are OK but they are a little too rich for my taste. The damn stuff is expensive and it likes to leak out.

Hi Lawrie,
what happened to Castrol Manual vmx that you put us onto for smooth changing? I see its GL 4.
Penrite has a 140 gear oil which they say wont harm bronze bushes.

Dave, the castrol stuff looked too thin for my liking,while away in it a while back i dropped it out and put the 85.140 back in ,gl5 though.

I put 45k on an overdrive I rebuilt usinf all the old parts. Been running synthetic the whole time because I did not know any better when I put it in. Still waiting.

Surely some one would know if the synthetic gear oil would attack the yellow parts.

The author of this document makes a compelling case that synthetic oil will cause a problem with yellow parts. It does not attack them, it causes them to be gradually sheared away he claims.

As a Downunder newbie chasing oil leak information on my Borg Warner Overdrive my head is rotating Linda Blair Exorcist style at this basic lubricant issue. Can a fellow Downunder Barner please tell me simply which oil to purchase?

The 140 was causing a stiff gear change in my 1935 after dropping out the oil I ask the counter man what would be a suitable oil for a brass bush tranz after a lengthy phone call to there oil expert he said this was brass bush friendly ,I am not sure if this is your answer Snake .Ted

Borg warner oil
