Filter GONE! I can't believe it. I got a new Air Maze filter (the wire screen kind) two weeks ago and yesterday I look under the hood and the screen filter is GONE! I made sure it was tight...I just can't believe it.
It does not appear that one can buy just the wire mesh filter housing or the tightening screw. I still just can't believe it. |
Re: Filter GONE! Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't run air filters at all. We never run on gravel roads, so no dust. When you start your car with full choke, gas will drip from the carburetor. With a filter, that gas will accumulate in the filter body. If the engine happens to backfire, it will start that gas on fire. Safety issue.

Re: Filter GONE! @Mike Peters: Hey, nice Farmall. It looks like an M. I have a '46 H with narrow front...

Re: Filter GONE! I lost one years ago then replaced it and drilled & safety wired the wing nut.

Re: Filter GONE! I agree with Mike, I ran on dirt roads for a lot of years and never had an issue. The engine lasted longer than I did.

That's just the metal screen insert material. I need the whole screen element (with the ends and the wingnut bolt). |
Re: Filter GONE! Time to shop at the local model A parts swaps... I see those parts frequently at swap meets.
|
Re: Filter GONE! I considered one of those screens until I saw one. Pretty coarse. What is their purpose??. Keep out bugs and small birds perhaps?

I know. I just could NOT make it to the swap in Woodstock, IL this weekend. That being said, I discovered the missing filter yesterday and I wouldn't have known to have bought another at the swap anyways. Making my list for next year I guess. |

Re: Filter GONE! Braol: The tractor in my avatar is actually a 1953 Super W6. That's a low profile standard model. Same motor as a Super M. Glad you found your missing screen. mike

Re: Filter GONE! Hmmm......fire hazard huh? Sounds like I should take mine off then. No dirt/dusty roads for my girl anyway. Just wondering when filters were needed as these cars routinely ran on unpaved roads from the beginning?

Re: Filter GONE! So....is it filter on or filter off? Does an increased fire chance negate any future rebuild chances, when we all know A's like to backfire or can. I had one the other day in the garage. As one poster above stated.... " With a filter, that gas will accumulate in the filter body. If the engine happens to backfire, it will start that gas on fire. Safety issue."
A fire would be a game changer........or is fire talk overstated? If it's smart not to have one and Like I said, I run on dry asphalt roads. |
Re: Filter GONE! So, I'm looking at this........anyone using it? https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Ford-Mo...QAAOSw-PFagzgW
This one below says it has "flame arresting mesh" Looks like the one I have now......any thoughts on this claim? https://www.ebay.com/itm/1928-34-For....c100005.m1851 |
Re: Filter GONE! I have this one and love it. It's a bit more, but the filter is out of the way more than the one in your link.

Re: Filter GONE! Good afternoon...K & N makes a filter that will fit on your 'A'. It is much more fire resistant. I did drill a 3/16th drain in mine and it has been working just fine for a number of years...Ernie in Arizona

I ask "If air cleaners are so useless, why does every modern car have one??"Same with oil filter. I agree that the wiere mesh type air "stainer" is near useless. I run a paper element filter mounted on the radiator stays and wouldn't consider going without one. It is very difficult to install any air filter because of the steering column. Very poor design.:( |
Re: Filter GONE! Like Ernie, I also use the K&N filter and I drilled a couple of very small holes in the bottom in case gas filled up in there.

Re: Filter GONE! Most any wire mesh will stop a flame in it's TRACKS!

Re: Filter GONE! Coat the wire mess by soaking it in oil and letting it drip, then install it. Oil traps and holds the dirt until you rinse it out in kerosene.

And yes this is not suitable for a RH drive Model A due to the steering box interference. |
Re: Filter GONE! 3 Attachment(s)
Here are my K&N filters. RHD car so I fabricated right angle adaptors at full cross section out of sheet metal as shown in the third pic.
Some (most or Many???) say they are ugly. The oil filter certainly is. I think the more upturned one is cheekily cute! They catch a lot of dirt even on tarsealed roads. And I still get the same 22 to 24 mpg (larger imperial gallons) on a trip at 55 to 60 mph. SAJ IN UK at present PS I just noticed the glass filter bowl in the second pic is half full of water. I had a faulty tank cap, since fixed! |

Re: Filter GONE! Y-Blockhead, the ones like yours that point down are not as ugly either. I have not found the correct adaptor in NZ so far. Plus I am always in a hurry to fit a new filter and get going. I forget to paint them and wait for them to dry. Plus again a vertical one can be filled right up before running. I can only fill mine about 2/3 full before fitting.
Then again oil pressure registers within seconds of start up on a new filter on my gauge. When I get back to NZ I will make a concerted effort to find 2 right angle adaptors for my oil filters............maybe. SAJ in Cornwall UK |
Re: Filter GONE! SAJ, I think vendors sell the adaptor you want. That said, I have grafted in right angled adaptors from other cars before today.
