32 - 34 gas caps

Does anyone make a gas cap that will actually seal and keep gasoline from leaking out of an original 32 - 34 tank? I'd rather have an unvented cap, but will try anything that will actually hold gas in the tank.

I've tried many tricks to get them to seal including cutting a second gasket and other ideas. So far I still get gas sloshing out onto the paint on both my '32 and '33.

I appreciate any ideas/help.

The question... No I don't think one exists. On the ideas... I have fixed the issue for the most part by refusing to fill the tank over 3/4, and even then I'm careful and regretful. '35-'36's do it when just the slightest bit full and taking a curve to the right.

Re: 32 - 34 gas caps

Chris, try smearing a bit of grease on the gasket you made. It works for me, (well, kinda). Good luck, Doug.

In my opinion in regards to repro caps the Vintique cap seals the best in original tanks. Stant makes a cap that seals well but looks nothing like a original and is vented

They do, I had the same problem on my 33 ,it would spew gas out on corners!finally worked it out!Had a vented cap on ,the one most suppliers sell,I fixed it by getting a non vented one from Sacramento vin ford,

Re: 32 - 34 gas caps

I took a piece of old inner tube & attached it to the filler neck & let it drain down the tube drain/slide. Hardly notice it.

Lawrie, was your non vented cap the Vintique cap?

Re: 32 - 34 gas caps

I use original non-vented caps with NOS leather gaskets for pre-36s and have not had spillage.

Learn something everyday, I thought they needed vented caps.

35ford, yes I think it was!i bought two so I had a spare in the 33: if you want a picket. Me know,I,m sure it’s not the 100% correct one as with the v8 logo it doesn’t do up straight!but I got a plane one as well, they both work well and don’t leak.

Re: 32 - 34 gas caps

Pre-'36 they are vented at the fuel pickup on top of the tank so a vented cap is both redundant and an exit route for spillage.

David, What did Ford do on trucks with the under seat tank where the fuel sender goes in from the bottom of the tank?

Re: 32 - 34 gas caps

I use a vented cap on the 34 but i have a spot of weld on the inside over the vent hole, a gasket cut from a bit of plumbers roofing rubber (Bout nol ) works great ,have not worried about it for 20 years ,

I used a Vintique nonvented locking cap with ford logo, works great. been on since 2014.

Re: 32 - 34 gas caps

Can you buy a new cap today from Vintique? I can't seem to find them on the web.

Here is a thread from 2012 that talked about the same thing 6 years ago.

https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showt...2571&showall=1

Are they out of business? They still have the website that is under construction - same as 2012.

Can you get their stuff from one of the other vendors like C&G, Joe's, Drakes, etc...?

Re: 32 - 34 gas caps

The thread I referenced from 2012 said Vintique was started by the same family as CW Moss. I called CW Moss and they said they handled Vintique components but that they are out of stock on the Vintique gas caps and don't know when they would have them. Looks like a dead end for a Vintique gas cap unless you can find NOS.

Re: 32 - 34 gas caps

Fairly sure our cap on the 32 is vintique ,not original as it has the V8 stamped in it. Tried all sorts to stop the leak from under the cap.
Went to this cap , never a drop leaks out now.

JimG 08-20-2018 03:01 PM

Re: 32 - 34 gas caps

CW Moss said they had a V8 cap from Drake. I saw Joe's Auto was also listing a Drake V8 Cap. Do you think your cap may have come from Bob Drake?

As far as I know there has not been a non vented gas cap made for Ford V8's because of the mechanism. They say there was one made for the 1935 Ford V8 models with the inscription on it.

Re: 32 - 34 gas caps

I'll do a search for the NOS leather gaskets and have also emailed Nick for his fix. Nothing worse than a leaking gas cap on new paint.

I appreciate all the responses so far.

On my 34 BB truck there is a tube which is part of the fuel sender unit which is open at the top inside of the tank and open at the bottom outside. The top part of it sits up inside a bubble in the top of the tank.

Re: 32 - 34 gas caps

Vintique use to make one #B-9030-SS, A non vented cap and it came with fitting that replaces a screw in gas pickup in your stock . The fitting came with a plastic tube that would vent your tank . You can still find them on E Bay once in while . I have one on my car and works great. Tried to a picture but unable

Tanks now makes a non-splash gas cap and you can get it vented or non-vented. $15
I bought a vented one and installed it and tested it this afternoon on my 1932 ford cabriolet and it did NOT leak at all!!
Happy Day!
Had to share this.
Fit was so tight I had to tweak the cap ever so slightly with pliers to get it to fit into the neck of the tank.
Big downside in the purchase from Yogi's is that they shipped me a catalog in a much bigger box and the shipping was over $11 which I thought was ridiculous... and I did NOT request a catalog!
Sorry no pics of the cap but looks like regular SS cap... but doesn't leak!
I had over half a tank of gas and it was leaking gas when cornering before I switched caps.

^^^Thanks. I was trying to do that but my dang computer wouldn't cooperate!!
Just got back from breakfast in the cabriolet and the outside of the gas tank is dry!
I'm very pleased... this issue has haunted me forever.

I spent some time polishing the tank and neck and managed to remove most of the gas stains. Still some more work to do to the neck and bottom of the tank but leaks no more!
