Antifreeze cost comparisons I went shopping for anti freeze, the concentrate, not the 50/50 mix.
Prestone yellow per gallon. O'Riellys $17.99 Wallmart $10.95 |
Re: Antifreeze cost comparisons Thanks, that is a valuable piece of information.

Re: Antifreeze cost comparisons I use Sierra as it is pet friendly, therefore the cost is immaterial.

Re: Antifreeze cost comparisons Just had store brand Catsup, for 1/2 the price of Major Brands, can't tell the difference!
Almost ALL Catsups have the same taste, NOBODY wants an "OFF THE WALL" flavor! Bill Smacking |
Re: Antifreeze cost comparisons denis4x4, I'm with you on Sierra anti-freeze.;) Plus, it does not foam up
like the Preston did for me.:( Bob-A:D |
Re: Antifreeze cost comparisons Just got 3 gallons of Prestone from Wallyworld.
Was surprised to see that it raises the polling point of water. |

sorry to hear that Bill only Heinz 57 for me! |
Re: Antifreeze cost comparisons Bill. I thought that water boiled at 100 degrees.
If a bit of anti freeze doubles it — all I can say is WOW! :p:p :D:D:D:D:D |

I learn something new everyday. Do you have to feed them or do they find their own food? |
Re: Antifreeze cost comparisons I've always heard that moles can become cancerous and therefore should be removed by a trained physician. Not what I want in my coolant.
|
Re: Antifreeze cost comparisons Propylene glycol has replaced ethylene glycol in most antifreezes..its non toxic...and lower cost.Funny I dont see the lower cost part.
|
Re: Antifreeze cost comparisons And with all the fetishes that the A crowd has, how come no one has mentioned the TYPE of water? You know, purified water, de-ionized water, heavy water, muddy water, distilled water, rain water, anything BUT what we have readily available, tap water.

Re: Antifreeze cost comparisons I like my water with an equal amount of Scotch.
|
Re: Antifreeze cost comparisons Re water, depends on where you live. In Portland Ore. I only use Bull Run water, pure mountain snow/rain water. :) LOL
|
Re: Antifreeze cost comparisons I go to the junkyard with a clean barrel and a pump.I drop the hose into the top six inches of green in their tank, and turn it on.I do it on mondays when it has settled for a day or so.I use that in my A's and any old gas equipment or trucks around.I don't use it in anything modern or with wet sleeved diesel engines. While Sierra is fine for gas engines,I had a very bad experience with it in the lats 80's with a Cummins truck engine. When I did the engine over I figured I would be a good doobie and use Serria. In 10 months, just over 100,000 miles,I had two cylinder liners pinhole. At the base of the liner the coolant always boils away from combustion heat, the Sierra attacked the liner metal. This was common on those engines, but at 4-500,000,not at 100,000.Not only did I have to pay a lot for the Sierra,I got to go my engine again at less than 1/4 of it's expected time.

Re: Antifreeze cost comparisons Heres what i've heard... Antfreeze becomes acidic after long use, your coolant system then becomes a battery and eats your metal components. Worse with aluminum. Simple and cheap preventive maintenance to buy 50/50 mixed antifreeze and replace every 5 or 6 years. Drop one probe of a DVOM into the radiator coolant while grounding the other probe to the engine block. If you get more than .2v it's time to replace.

Re: Antifreeze cost comparisons I used to read on here NEVER use antifreeze in your Model A engine. Story was if it ever got into your pan it would eat the babbit. Has something changed?
|
Re: Antifreeze cost comparisons Same thing is true for any engine. If it gets into the pan in a modern engine it wipes out the babbit too.The babbit is just a little thinner in a modern engine. It doesn't attack it because it is babbit,it just wipes it out because it is not a lube. It's like trying to use water for oil.

Re: Antifreeze cost comparisons "Oh my God ... There are 6.022 times 10 to the 23rd power, atoms in each Mole of water and some of it spilled on my white lab coat!
How many Jigawatts of power will it take to dry out my white lab coat in the dryer? |
Re: Antifreeze cost comparisons Comparing antifreeze to Catsup, "wunder" if I can buy a GALLON Jug of Catsup??? That would last out for 27 Lbs of Fish Sticks or Hot Dog Weiners.

Re: Antifreeze cost comparisons Is the boiling point of catsup higher or lower than ketchup?
|
Re: Antifreeze cost comparisons Well, the boiling point is dependent on how much antifreeze you mix in with that red stuff, no matter what you call it.
Geeez, everybody knows that!:D |
Re: Antifreeze cost comparisons My local ACE Hardware stocks SIERRA which I also like due to its non-toxic contents and resistance to foaming. I use it with DISTILLED WATER at around $1 per gallon at Stop & Shop.
|
Re: Antifreeze cost comparisons For antifreeze, it is all about price, and not the 50-50 stuff! To me, ethylene glycol is ethylene glycol, and if it is sold as antifreeze, low price is always my choice! What I try and do is have in the back of my mind my current garage inventory, and I try not to buy this stuff when I need it but rather when on sale! It does require being aware of the best prices!
