ford 4 spd overdrive to 59ab 2 Attachment(s)
what kind of a bell housing do I need to do this pics of the transmission
|
Re: ford 4 spd overdrive to 59ab never done it, but i'm sure folks are using a bell off the front of a truck 4spd. there was even a guy making the adaptor for the torque tube i believe. you'll have to ask mr google, he knows every thing

Re: ford 4 spd overdrive to 59ab Open drive line

Re: ford 4 spd overdrive to 59ab I think Ol Ron has done that, search his posts.

Re: ford 4 spd overdrive to 59ab |
Re: ford 4 spd overdrive to 59ab Model Engineering makes an adapter fora Ford 4 speed top loader trans which I believe is the same config as the 3 + 1 O/D trans you have. I have one for the 4 speed and its high quality.

Re: ford 4 spd overdrive to 59ab that what I was looking for thanks
|
Re: ford 4 spd overdrive to 59ab I used the bell off the front of a flathead Ford 4 speed and made a simple flat aluminum plate to that same RTS transmission. It works just fine with the overdrive and the synchromesh first gear. Did this to at least a half dozen flathead engines.
Don't know how to put the pictures on this site, but can send them to an email address. |
Re: ford 4 spd overdrive to 59ab I can post them for you if you like. [email protected]

Re: ford 4 spd overdrive to 59ab Could you send pics to [email protected]. I am interested in that application. Thanks

Ford 3+1 overdrive [ 4 speed ] conversion to retain closed drive.
I will have this conversion kit on display at the Pate swap in April together with all the other products I manufacture. |
Re: ford 4 spd overdrive to 59ab Yes, I did this to an 8BA in my 47 with a spicer 44A rear,. really works like a dream. I used a stock stamped steel bell housing and welded on some tabes after boting out the regester to the same size as the tran,. another way to do this id with a Hogs head adapter for the 59. I realize most prople dont have the machinery to do this, but if you know sombody with a mill, it's pretty easy.

Re: ford 4 spd overdrive to 59ab 5 Attachment(s)
Here are the photos Jay was wanting posted. They are of two different transmission bolt patterns, but the concept is the same for both. This is the approach I use for T5 adapters using a "Hogshead" for the bellhousing part.
www.jalopyjournal.net www.jalopyjournal.net" This is what I did.www.jalopyjournal.net I use the exact same transmission that you have in your picture.www.jalopyjournal.net It's simple.www.jalopyjournal.net www.jalopyjournal.netThere is nothing to it." Jay One of the first steps is to determine the input shaft length which determines the thickness of the adapter plate. Note: Sorry it took so long!!! My wife had surgery yesterday and spent most of my time at the hospital. Running a little behind. |
Re: ford 4 spd overdrive to 59ab hope your wife is doing good
|
Re: ford 4 spd overdrive to 59ab 6 Attachment(s)
I will also post some of the T5 adapter information I have posted previously. It might provide you some additional data. Remember, this is T5 specific (actually T5z), but the concept is the same for just about any transmission using a flat adapter plate and a "Hogshead".

Re: ford 4 spd overdrive to 59ab 1 Attachment(s)
Who makes the shifter in the bottom right picture?
Bob |
Re: ford 4 spd overdrive to 59ab I don't know, it was a vender at a swap meet. I made my own similar to the one pictured. I can find some photos of the parts if you are interested. My objective was to use an original shifter located in the original location modified to work as a remote shifter. You can do an online search on remote shifters and turn up a lot of examples. They are fairly popular on various mustang applications.

Re: ford 4 spd overdrive to 59ab Some pictures would be great. I did a search before and didn't see anything
like that shifter. Bob |
Re: ford 4 spd overdrive to 59ab What kind of money are we talking about for the adapter for a 59a eng and the 170 trans?
|
Re: ford 4 spd overdrive to 59ab 8 Attachment(s)
Here are a few of the shifter bracket I built. Sorry, this is all I have photos of at the moment. I will also post some examples of other approaches.

Re: ford 4 spd overdrive to 59ab Thanks for the pictures.

Re: ford 4 spd overdrive to 59ab JSeery
Thanks for posting the remote shifter pictures. Looks like you have that problem all figured out. |
Re: ford 4 spd overdrive to 59ab I like the T5z and don't really like the idea of switching the tail housing on a new transmission. I could get the T5z for around $1,100 with free shipping for a few years. That was a deal hard to pass up! But no longer.

Re: ford 4 spd overdrive to 59ab TJW,,,what’s a good “Round Number Estimate “ (Price) on your conversion..?? That looks like the way to go for one more gear on my 48....
|
Re: ford 4 spd overdrive to 59ab JSeery, That is a very nice solution to moving the shifter without disturbing the innards. Seems simple and clean. Thanks - Bob
|
Re: ford 4 spd overdrive to 59ab I have neither the equipment or brains that JSeery & others here have, so I used the Model Engineering adapter that Gene Sanders sells. As 51540BAT mentioned , it is a very high quality item. When installed & painted, it's hard to tell it's not an original equipment item. I used a true 4 speed, which has the same bolt pattern as the 3+1.
I'm very happy with the setup. I also added a Gear Vendors O/D behind the 4 speed. Again, it works real well, but in the end it probably would have been less costly and easier to just use a T-5 from a Mustang, and do as "J" did with the shifter. Jim |
