Time for new tires 2 Attachment(s)
Pretty much got the life out of these old shoes.
Any thoughts about using 5.50 x 16 tires instead of 600 x 16s so they fit in the fender wells better? |
Re: Time for new tires I would run the 5.50's on the front and 6.50's on the back.
|
Re: Time for new tires I would say you got maximum use out of those tires......
|
Re: Time for new tires Wow, you can almost see the air in that one.

Re: Time for new tires What type of wheels, and what size tires are on there now? Not sure why you feel 600 x16's wouldn't fit fender wells on a vehicle that probably had 18" tires to begin with, ... unless maybe something has been modified that's not apparent in your photos.

Re: Time for new tires If those are the tires, how are the brakes?

I am thinking the same way as Rich for my '31 RDPU where I intend to run 16 inch Kelsey wheels. The problem is that the 600x16's are slightly too wide meaning you have to let the air out to get them in the fender well. Of course I also carry a tire pump to inflate them if needed. Charlie Stephens |
Re: Time for new tires Hey Walt, would that tire be known as a "down east Knobby " for winter travel ?
|
Re: Time for new tires I run 5.50 on the front of my 33 pickup with 16" wheels but it has a dropped axle under it (shhhhhh...)

If those are the tires, how are the brakes? Wow, you can almost see the air in that one. What is wrong with that tire? Walt You guys are awfully clever today. Best chuckles I have had in a while. |

Re: Time for new tires No Test, GB. I just think they look really good with those narrow 16" Ford wheels. DD

Re: Time for new tires As Charlie says, 6.00 x 16 tires don't fit properly into fender wells designed to accommodate a 5.25 x18 tire.
Rich, They will be, after all, spare tires, so what's the harm in 5.50s (which may still be a tight fit depending on the make of the tire). |

Re: Time for new tires Quote:
This tire was actually one of the spares, but unlike a couple of others, it still holds air. I wonder what 60 year old air smells like? |

Seeing this picture on facebook reminded me some of this post......

Re: Time for new tires Maybe a Hernia truss would help that one.

At least, the Tube didn't pop and the Tyre is still inflated. What more could you ask for? |

If you were every wondering what a twisted tube looks like. Here's one. Was installed by a tire dealer into my '35 wire wheel years back. Always was wondering why the sidewall looked distorted. Had a flat after about 30 miles of driving.

New tires arrived! Coker 600x16 by way of Summit Racing in Reno, NV. Same price as ordering directly from Coker, but Summit had free shipping. Waiting for tubes, then off to the tire shop for mounting and balancing.
Meanwhile, I got a side mirror on. Just using one of the pair of swan neck mirrors from Macs. Oddly, this one is marked RH (the other LH), but I wanted the arm to curve up, not down. For you purists: 1. All the hinge style mirrors I found are made for 2" to 2-1/4" hinges. Mine on this RPU are puny little things, only 1-5/8 inches high (pin height), so it would mean some fabricating. 2. My RPU windshield posts are not drilled to accept a threaded mirror like other roadsters. 3. There is no way to use a door edge peep mirror. 4. I already had one hole here from an old side mirror my dad put on 60 or more years ago, so I was able to use that. Decided to go easy for now and get this on the road. Also, someone asked about these swan neck mirrors for a '34. On my RPU, the curve of the door is such that I'm barely able to adjust the head inward enough to get a view alongside the truck. It's at the limit of the head mobility (the little post and ball on the head). If I wanted to use the one on the passenger side, it would need to angle in even more, far more than the mirror head would allow. Might work fine for a flat-sided car, or if I used a stick-on wide angle mirror. |
