Brockman steel packs
 

Anybody body running Brockman steel packs on their Flathead? I have 22" Smithys and there too quiet. I'm looking for a better sound for my 34 with a 59ab.

Good question. I heard a lot good stuff on Broc.knan Also what are louder steel packs or glass?

I have cherry bomb and think their too quite as well.

I run the Brockman steel packs. I have the short Brockman steel packs. They sound just right if you like a good flathead exhaust rumble. I've never been a fan of the Smithy's.

Well, I run no mufflers and the pipes exit just before the rear wheel of my avatar so they are a bit loud when accelerating but great once you get to speed. I also know that JM35 also runs no mufflers and he exits out the back of his car - hopefully he chimes in here as to how they are but in the past, he has liked the sound ....

I'm running Brockman Steel Packed mufflers on four of my Flatheads. You can contact Brackman and tell them the kind of sound you want out of your Flathead and they will build you mufflers. On my convertibles I run the shorter mufflers and on the '51 F-1 and the '53 F-100 Panel I run a bit longer muffler. I like my Flatheads to bark a bit when they are cold, mellow out at speed, and rap off when you let off of the gas...they do make sweet music...:):cool:

Vic, you wouldn't happen to have a sound clip you could post of the short Brockman's your running on your convertible do you? It would be much appreciated.

I have had Brockmans for about 7 years after dumping Smithys. Much nicer tone.

The Smithy's on my stock 59AB have probably been there since around the 1970's. Whatever was in them is long gone. Sound fine to me.

I have Brockman steel packs on my 46 Merc much better sound than the Smitthys on some of my other cars.

If you go for the 22" or 24" steelpacks from Brockman you will cruise at a pleasant tone and be able to hold a conversation or listen to music easily. You will also get a great sound when putting your foot on the throttle!

Straight pipes. Great sound and not as loud as you would think.

I run straight pipes out the back of a 50 ford with a 53 flat merc in front. Going down a hill they pop and crack, sound good going down the road. Remember loud pipes save lives. Keeps anyone from walking out in front of you, they hear you coming down the road. Just my take on it. No Help

I don't have any audio clips of the '39CS but I'll see what I can do with the Smartphone... My computer upgraded itself to windows 10 and now I have nothing but trouble posting photos, etc. on the FordBarn. I do have two Cigar City Flatheads pages on FaceBook along with my own page. I'll try to shoot some video/audio of the '39 and post it here and/or on FaceBook later today.

I heard Vic's 39 and his pickup. The Brockman mufflers along with Red headers are a very sweet sound. Even driving at 65 on highway the sound was perfect. We were able to carry a conversation and still enjoy the hum of the flathead.

I just need to wait for my cherry bombs and pipes to get to the point I can justify the replacement. Sigh.....

I have some 20 inch blanks I got from a Muffler shop years ago. They were steel packs as I remember, after 25 years there are no guts in them any more . Tailpipes end at the rear Bumper with STOCK cast Iron Manifolds. Don't need no Fancy Ass Cast Iron headers. Just like the Hot Rod Flathead rebuilding Article in 1956 The last thing to buy is Headers

I'm the "odd man out" on this thread. My 45 1/2 ton is like a BMW motorcycle, you see it go by, you don't hear it. The loudest noise it makes is the starter turning the motor over. When I put the clutch in you can hear the throw-out bearing turning. One of my friends calls it my stealth truck because he can't hear it when I drive up to his shop even when he has the door open. I'm not wanting to offend anyone for their choice of mufflers but, I outgrew all that noise thing fifty years ago about the same time I started loosing my hearing from too much loud noise.

My first flathead was a very low mileage '46 Ford sedan coupe I bought in 1971. When I stopped to show it to my dad he said start it up and lets hear it,told him I never shut it off.It was the quietest and smoothest running flathead Ford I have ever owned,you could definitely do the Packard coin test on the engine. Every other flathead I have done since got away from the original factory build by necessity but all had noisy adjustable lifters and after market internals that never seemed as balanced as that first one I owned. Duals would have been an insult on it.

Over the weekend I shot some video with my phone but, I didn't post it because the audio does not give a true representation of the actual sound of the Brockman's on my '39 CS. :(

Vic, you are in the audio/video production business so I shouldn't say this, BUT, I told my son the same thing. He said when it gets to a computer it sounds better.

Gene, I'm used to professional broadcast quality recording equipment... I'll try it again and upload it to the computer and see if the sound quality improves... Merry Christmas to you and yours. :)

I've got the short brockmans on my '40. Originally, I put long ones on, but it was too quiet. When I did the exhaust on my '36 pickup, I put the long ones on it and swapped in some short ones for the '40 Coupe.

They were on my car ! I tried straight pipes on my '37 . Too loud for me . Then I went w/the short , 12" body Brockman's . Woman taking my order said they were " the loudest ones we have " . She wasn't lying ! I couldn't tell the difference between them and straight pipes . :eek:Then I went to PepBoys and got a pair of Magnaflow glasspacks . They have an 18" body , and a nice deep rumble , which was just right for me .:D

Well, I went with 12" Brockman steel packs. There not that loud. I want more rump. Looks like I'm gonna need a L-100 cam and take out the max-1 cam and go straight pipes.It does sound good though.

Sounds good ! I do not have the pipes running out the rear on mine , I am sure that made it louder , especially in the car .
