Auto Transport Companies
 

Anyone have any experience using an auto transport company for cross country movment of a Model A or other car. Thanks in advance for your recommendtaions.

have done it many times with different carriers and never had a problem with it, i always use enclosed transport however. I have a local company here in Chicago that i have used and some of the others are pretty good, Fedex has a great one and they are pretty competitive priced.

Passport Transport
 

My story on transporting old cars... Model A Fords in my case...
I hired Passport Transport to move 10 cars from CA to the east coast in summer of 2000. Some cars ran, most didn't. The Passport driver showed up right on time and loaded the cars without incident; winched if needed. The cars were delivered 10 days later as agreed upon; cars unloaded and put in place, again with no drama.
I was given the driver's cell phone # and had constant contact as needed. No voicemail, no office mis-communication...straight contact to the driver who was hauling my cars; 24/7. The cars were secure, never unloaded/ re loaded, unlike other haulers, my shipment was intact.
I couldn't recomend Passport more highly, and would use them again in any future move. They are a great outfit to deal with. Every part of the move was above board and all the personnel I dealt with were courteous and knowledgeable.
I think the big point to be noted when dealing with vehicle transport is to DEAL DIRECT with a major transport company with years of service.
AVOID any broker arraingment; they are shifting your car from trailer to trailer, warehouse, etc. and there will be a new story every time you call the broker. Basically a broker has no personal responsibility and will shift the blame to whatever trucker is next in line.
Check references and don't always go for the low bid...the big guys know what they're doing and have the equipment,experience,expertise, history and insurance to handle what you require for your vehicle relocation.

Doug is absolutely right with the whole transport brokering thing. I sell a lot of cars (and buy a lot as well) and the larger companies are the way to go. Passport Transport (formerly FED EX and formerly the original Passport) does a great job as does Reliable Carriers. When someone buys a car from me and uses one of these companies, the results are flawless. When someone uses a small, independent or a brokering company, there is always drama.

I had my Model A Pickup moved from San Diego to Alaska. Used Alaska Auto Transport. Was delivered in perfect shape, in a closed container, making one transfer in Seattle. Cost was under $2.5K

There's a fellow over on the HAMB (name escapes me) and transport is how he makes his living, good feedback and he understands "car people's needs". Not an endorsement but a suggestion.

I've used American Auto Transport on several occasions with good results. Never shipped an old school Ford though, unfortunately. They do ship enclosed if that's what you're looking for, and prices are pretty decent.

Just for clarification purposes: Passport Transport was the company started by Robert Pass from St. Louis many years ago (30+) and was one of the first (if not the first) full service, fully enclosed auto transport companies. About 8 years ago, he sold the company to FED EX when they were expanding into other shipping businesses. About six months to a year ago, FED EX sold the auto transport business and, the new owner, has renamed it back to Passport Transport and continues to operate it with the same quality service that was instilled by Robert Pass and Fed Ex . The new company is owned by businessman Steve Plaster who is also from St. Louis and has a major personal collection of a couple of hundred great antique and classic cars.

I just sent my son's Delorean down to S.C. from north of Boston. Cost me $591. for enclosed trailer, A REAL PROFESSIONAL driver- loader. Car did not run. He has winches, ramps, etc...Moves only one car at a time- anywhere- and said he will move anything if it fits in his LARGE trailer. Son got his car 2 days later, delivered right into his carport. NO dings, dents or issues. I will use this man again!!!His ph. # is; (717)-324-7920.

I run a restoration and collison center for the exotic Italian automakers here in the US. We only use a company that hauls their cars inclosed. They are very reliable and over protective of the vehicles they transport. I've tried others in the past and aren't to happy with the results. Let me know if your interested in their number and I can pass it along to you.

Sorry but that is not always the case ...

What destroys cars during transport is:

Transport performed by people who do not
care about the vehicles they haul

Loading & unloading out of the public eye on multi car carriers

Driving at night

Driving at high speed

I drive 55 m.p.h. during daylight hours only
averaging 300 miles a day ;)

I pass this along anyplace I can do not use Showtime pro-formance out of Alabama, run by a guy name of Glenn Crook, they are no good, several complaints against him and I had the misfortune to have them hit me in a truck stop in Vegas, never will see my money from that one.

Horseless Carriage out of Jersey is another very good company to use, enclosed trailers and very professional drivers, they haul a lot of dealer Fariries and Mercedes, and do containering for overseas shipment and the paper work to go with it.
