Re: When was your 1st model A?

I was 14, my first vehicle was a 1931 AA 280A

If I only knew then what I know now. Then it was just a 24 year old truck that my Dad had owned several years before. It had changed hands twice between the time Dad sold it till I tracked it down and bought it. (for $45)

Re: When was your 1st model A?

I'm not sure it counts but I was given a 30-31 pickup cab and bed at like at 10 or 11. By 13 I had sold it to fund a VW project. This lead to an adiction to German cars for a while but at 39 I got my next Model A, my Deluxe Coupe.

Re: When was your 1st model A?

When I was 39, I traded my 27 T for a model A (29 Town Sedan...very nice original unrestored, but well maintained). I had various Model T Fords since I was 19. After driving the Model A, I never wanted another T. Now I have 9 Model A Fords.

Re: When was your 1st model A?

In 1957 I traded a running '27 T coupe for a non-running '29 A coupe. Turned out there was nothing wrong w/the A, just needed gas and a battery.

In 1958 when I was 14 I purchased a 1930 Sport Coupe for $75, engine and trans disassembled and not in car. Had it running before I got my drivers license.

1966 was 14 when I pulled my roadster out of a field where my father had left it after he used it for 16 years.

1964, I was 14. 1929 Tudor Sedan. I saved it from being hot rodded. The guy was getting ready to put a Chevy engine it.
I still have the car, it was my mother that told me to never sell it........

It was 1963, I was 14 years old and it was a 4 door sedan that I installed a 1930 coupe body on it. I kept the car until I was 20 then sold it.

12 yrs old , 65 yrs ago, a neighbor gave me a coupe from out in her field --pretty rough w/ no top, etc . Got it running & enjoyed ripping around our rural dirt roads while beginning my motor head ventures .

And if you look at his picture in his avatar - he's selling papers in 1931 - sure was a mighty small 24 year old. :p:rolleyes:

Just looking thru this thread, it's amazing how many of us owned a Model A before we could drive it "legally".

Re: When was your 1st model A?

Well, first Model A at 37 but first prewar car at 14, a 1941 Plymouth "restored" around 1978 with Sears wide whites, new brakes and tuneup and seatcovers found at my first Hershey trip. So not a show car but a LOT of fun for a kid!

1960 when I was 15. Drove it back and forth in the driveway many, many times. Also drove it around the yard once in a while. It was a '30 sedan. Then a late '31 pickup at 17. Then another '30 sedan at age 66. And a couple of weeks ago got this gem at 71.

1956 when I was 13 years old. It was a gift from my uncle for helping hime with harvesting hay for the cows.

Re: When was your 1st model A?

I took an interest in my grandfathers Model A that was buried in his garage at a very young age (4? 5? Mid 1980's) and he always said it would be mine. He started working on it after he retired and got it painted and running but never saw it to real roadworthy "completion." He passed away just shy of my 28th birthday and I stored it at a family member's house until I had a place of my own. I brought the car to my own home just shy of my 31st birthday (2011) and I'm still working on it today @ 35. I hope to have it done within the next few years.

In reality my coupe would have been a prime hotrod project as it needed everything done - mechanically, cosmetically etc. It is costing me far more than what the car is worth to restore but the enjoyment from the process and the memories it has with me and grandpa outweigh the common sense aspect of it. It was a good looking car from 20ft but didn't stop, handle, or run reliably like it should. I've finished all the mechanicals of the car and now I'm working on the body and sheet metal. There is no doubt in my mind I should be driving the wheels off of it on tours before I'm 40! :D

I was 12 1958-59 when I got my cabriolet. My dad had bought it new and it had passed around from his mother to my cousin, and then to me. I stopped driving it in 1964 but kept it and started rebuilding it about 5 years ago. It is so close to being finished now, mostly just plating, glass and the top.

I was 14, in 1959. A 29 two door sedan. Back was cut out of it but it ran and had to be push started or use the crank. Paid 15 dollars for it. Can't imagine that my mother let me buy it. She was a single women and when she went out in the evenings [bowling league, 2 nights a week] she would take the crank with her. She had no idea we could push start it and cruse around. We were always home and in bed before she got home. Great memories, Bill

My Dad and I bought our 1930 Tudor when I was 15. We worked on it together and enjoyed driving it for years. After I got out of college, I slowly bought Dad out, and have been collecting parts for a complete restoration ever since. I've had three other Model As in the meantime, but always kept the Tudor.

I was 14. "Borrowed" $225 from my Dad to buy my '29 town sedan. Drove it to high school until my senior year when I discovered faster cars and faster girls!

Re: When was your 1st model A?

Talking about driving age, in Louisiana, you could own and drive a car at 15 yrs old. The notary asked if I was old enough and I told him I had my driver's license. He stamped it and I paid him the fee of $0.50.
You could drink if you were tall enough.

Re: When was your 1st model A?

The evening of my high school graduation I was hiding a phone call, in my parents bedroom. Before going to the ceremony, I had made the deal ('30 CPE dirt track refugee, plenty of blue wrench indignities) and could not care less about pomp and circumstance!:D:D:D:D

Hold on, I just remembered a year and a half earlier, a buddy of mine showed up with a roadster. It was a '29 style bucket, the back half was cracked in the center, it had axles, rubber, wishbones, brakes(?), steering, and stock rails. Nothing else.

The deal was his boss wanted off of his GULF lot. I would be considered half partner for use of dad's garage. It worked for a while but soon we were begging for a new home. I used to refer to it as our rope car as we drug it from one new home to another. Including one overnight at my uncle's GULF, that saw morning bring an inspection by company execs. :(

We decided to cash out for $50. But one last trip down (steep) Midvale ave in Philly, I was steering my pal was driving dad's station wagon. The rope thing had me climbing up the tailgate, when I got a brainstorm. My foot found the E-brake cable. A hard push and the front of the drive shaft dug asphalt. Can't say how high I sailed, but I was looking over the hood of the SW, before crashing back into the cockpit. My pal had to stop for a WTF.

Any way, to end this, the buyer informed us geniuses that we had a Cabriolet. The tops of the doors had been bent over and hammered down to cover the glass slots. (yes the windshield frame was part of the cowl).

I had a wonderful childhood! (one diner near me refused me service if I didn't use the Borax first):D

I was 13 when I bought my 29 Tudor. I was riding my bike and saw it. Knocked on the door and asked the guy how much. $125. Yep I had $135 saved from mowing lawns. Sold.
