Ttransmission removel from F1 HELP!
 

I am getting ready to remove my 4 speed tranny and install a newly rebuilt 3 speed top loader along with clutch and everything that goes along with it in my 50 F1. I just put it up on jack stands and ready to start. My question is that it doesn't look like there is enough room to slide the 4 speed tranny back from the engine because of the cross member sitting so close. Am I missing something ????

Per the manual it can be removed.

Hoist vehicle and drain lubricant.
Remove Seat cushion and floor plate
Place support under the rear of the engine
Disconnect drive shaft
Remove any linkage connected to transmission
Disconnect clutch equalizer shaft
Disconnect speedometer cable
Disconnect transmission at engine rear support and at the bellhousing
Pull transmission the rear until spline shaft is clear of the clutch
Lift transmission through the opening in the floor.

I've never done it, that is just from the manual!

I have the manual and read the same thing. But I just measured it and there is only 3/4" of a inch between the rear of the tranny and the cross member. Got to go back farther than that. Doesn't It?

Yep it would need the thickness of the pressure plate plus the distance from the flywheel surface to the front side of the pilot bearing, darn that manual! Maybe someone with some actual experience will jump on before long!

Those 4 speeds are heavy. I could not imagine trying to pull one out of the trans opening. Probably want to take the seat out if you try it. If your truck is all painted up would be another reason not try it. Not much room at the rear between trans and crossmember.

Got the seat out and going to pull with engine hoist.

I just did mine, got the box out(just) but to reinstall I had to remove the crescent shaped mounting from the crossmember, would have been "much" easier had I removed that first!

I 'done' that job.........4spd out thru cab. I yanked a nonsyncro from a '51 F1 and installed a side shift......the job seemed as though it would never end. As you know the 4 spd driveshaft and the 3 spd driveshaft are way not the same.

Yep Got the right drive shaft and its ready to go. Any other tips on getting the 4 speed out of the truck? Hope to get it out tomorrow.

I have done that conversion on a truck I had a few years ago. Be ready for severe back pain the next week after!! If I recall I jacked the rear of the engine removed the mount and it narrowly came out. Much easier with two people.

^^What 35ford said^^ You have to jack up the rear of the engine , and it will just clear . And , make sure you have a helper !

Done this more times than I care to tell.... at least with the LD trans you can just reach down and pick it up.

Got it ready to come out but need to bring home cherry picker from storage and it was raining all day yesterday. So Hopefully today will get it out. I will keep you informed. Thanks for all the help!

Fixed it for you! The 4-sp weighs just over a hundred pounds. Not a lot of room in the cab, even with the seat out. It's likely greasy and not much to grab onto.

Got it out by myself with the picker! What a job and no room for error! Hope the new one goes in easier. Going to go and drop off fly wheel at machine shop. No Way will I do this again. I am getting to old for this much work.

When I did this swap a few years ago my brother and I manhandled the four speed out. I don't remember it being all that horrible!! The three speed is noticeably lighter, of course, but two people make it much much easier. Take the time to line up the clutch disk properly with an alignment tool so that the tranny will slip in easily. When you're all done you'll think you have a new truck!! Such an improvement in drivability!!

I have the 3 spd box in my truck, just curious how that is better than a 4spd?

The 4 speed is hard to shift and takes a bit of practice to say the least! The gearing is extremely low and of very little value to the average driver. Unless you love them (and some people do!) they are fairly worthless.

For all that work, think about stepping up to a five speed. There is nothing more satisfying than running up to 55 and shifting one more time, to take the RPMs down to 2000.

This four speed is not a sports car tranny - it has no synchros and is very difficult to shift even after getting used to double clutching.

I am at a standstill waiting on a new ring gear. Flywheel is at the machine shop and he wants to put the ring gear on before he re faces the flywheel. Wes the owner of the engine rebuild/machine shop is the best of the best and really knows what he is doing. I am getting excited about getting the 3 speed installed hopefully next week sometime. On the 3 speed I am using a 1940 case with 1952 gears. first and second are a little higher gears for takeoff. I am also using a 1940 swan neck shifter that I had chromed. Looks really good.

I didn't have that much trouble with the 4-speed other than a pain double clutching as I'am an old farm boy and have driven semi's alot BUT try teaching the wife to drive the 4 speed. We almost stopped twice along the road to get out and have it out. I would have but she is pretty tough when it comes right down to it.
