42-47 truck heater
 

My truck came with a heater(in a box). Is it the correct era for my jailbar truck. There's a knob on the dash marked T then has a rod heading to the bottom of the carb(not connected) is that to turn the heater on? Where should I plumb it in on the motor?

I would think the knob is for Throttle. It would go to the carb. That is the way my '41 Coupe is.

Yes that would make sense, the rod ends at the base of the carb, opposite side to the throttle linkage tho
Could someone tell me where the 2 heater pipes will connect to the motor

Looks like the correct heater. Wiring it is fun, is has a go backwards feature and a special heater switch, believe the same as the cars to work it.

Plumbing rule is; the bottom heater hose goes to the top of the engine
and the top heater hose goes to bottom of engine. So if a V8 the
bottom heater hose goes next to the temp sender and the top heater hose goes to
the water pump. Forgot to say the shut off valve goes next to the temp sender.

The hose to the water pump area is often connected to an add-on fitting that goes into the lower radiator hose. Only one required on the passenger side.

Thanks for the replies. Took it apart today, all kinds of ancient crud in there!! Got the fan motor working, will need to get the heater rad checked out but it looks in very good condition
The "shut off valve" is that controlled by a cable? Anyone have a pic of the valve,I don't have one

There are different types, some screw straight into the head and some fit into the hose. These are not to control temperature (like with a cable) they are to close off the water to the heater when it is not in use. Typically, open in late fall and closed in late spring.

Here's a photo of a heat temperature control device that some members have .... a "Heater Flow Control Valve" on my '47 that is located in the return heater hose that connects to the lower radiator hose. It opens, adjusts and closes the flow of hot water through the heater core, using a choke-type cable whose knob is next to the electric switch for the heater. Lets one keep the heater fan motor running (i.e. defrosting the windshield) while controlling the output temperature.

Don't remember the manufacturer's name but understand they are available if you look around for a source.

PS: I have the same heater you show in the your photo.

What colour were the outer cases and the 3 doors originally?

If you have the "Early Ford V8 Club of America" book look in Appendix A, page A-3. That heater was an accessory popularly installed in 1942 thru 1948 cars. The book shows it in photo A-2 as one-color called "mottled gray metallic (hammer tone silver) with dark green translucent knobs". Although the finish on my heater is in very good condition the knobs look very dark due to the natural long-term exposure to ultra violet light.

A 1942 version of the same design in tan color with three horizontal ivory colored strips and ivory knobs also lasted into 1946 until its stock was depleted.

Regardless, you may wish to obtain a copy of that book as it has a wealth of information, especially in regard to colors.

Yes, I would like to get that book
The outer case on mine has no paint on it now! Looks almost like polished aluminium now, I will leave it as is, I've painted the back casing,rad etc satin black and the 3 doors green, knobs cleaned up nicely and look black, should all look like it was fitted 40 yrs ago to go with the general look of the truck!
Any reason why I couldn't fit a discreet shut off valve inside the cab rather than on the cylinder head?

No problem fitting the shut off in the cab, if that's what you want.
Have you got the proper switch for that heater? The proper switch reverses the fan rotation. One way pushes air through the heater core into the cab. Other direction sucks air through the heater core and blows it up the defrost tubes to windshield.

Anyone have a pic of one of these heaters mounted in a truck? Mine is too close to the go pedal!!

You need to offset it to the right Ian.
With just an on/off switch the motor will only spin one way, your choice is screen heat or cab heat.

My 48 came with that same heater and knob set-up in a box of bits, its a mottled tan. I did not bother to install it as I won't drive it much over winter & in any event the engine is a "bloody big heater" in these cars:)

After a couple of plumbing issues I have it working, very toasty in the cab now!!
