1946 ford grill gaurd question about a 1946 ford grill guard, did it have the ford script in the center of the upper bar ? I have one but I don't know how to tell if its a aftermarket or a ford original accessory or if it was even offered by ford.
|
Re: 1946 ford grill gaurd I looked through the book, "Ford 1946-1948 Closing the years of tradition." and they do not show that as an accessory. I guess they were aftermarket and who knows how many are out there is different forms.

The Accessory Grille Guards on the 1946 Fords do not have the Ford Script. |
Re: 1946 ford grill gaurd Chuck is correct, the only front end related accessories were Bumper Tips, Winter Front and Bug Guard Screen. Are you sure that the piece you have is not from a '40. There were several aftermarket grill guards made, but not by Ford.
|
Re: 1946 ford grill gaurd The first production 1946 Ford that was given to President Truman has the same grille guard as in the picture above(no Ford script).
|
Re: 1946 ford grill gaurd According to the 1941-1948 Ford Restoration Book, published by The Early Ford V8 Club of America, on page A-8, it states that the front Bumper Centre Guard was optional from 1941 to 1946.
When the Bumper Guards were redesigned for 1947, no Centre Guard was available. 1946 was the last year for these Guards. |
Re: 1946 ford grill gaurd The one I have is like the guard shown on the black convertible above. I also have the original bolts that almost look bent but the closer look they look to be made this way to work with the contour of the bumper. I took it off a stock low mileage 46 ford but didn't know the history of it.
Now for the next question. .......whats it worth ? Has driver quality chrome and no damage. |
Re: 1946 ford grill gaurd I have one on my 42 and has no Ford script. I put a small Blue Oval on mine from a Ford Taurus. Fits great and for my personal taste.
|
Re: 1946 ford grill gaurd There's no script on the 42-46 grille guard.
|
Re: 1946 ford grill gaurd Mine has no script.

Re: 1946 ford grill gaurd Hi Richard, Merry Christmas
My 46 has the lower crossbar also. Original but don't know if it came from the factory or if the dealer drilled holes in the guards to attach the bar. http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w...ps6lgju1cn.jpg John |
Re: 1946 ford grill gaurd My grill gaurd has the lower crossbar and I have a second set of guards with a hole drilled In them. I guess that hole is for a crossbar then?

All 1946 Fords had the lower bar attached to the Bumper Guards at the bottom. The Licence Plate Bracket was attached to this Lower Bar. Refer to attached photos. Only thing missing are the bolts holding the Licence Plate Bracket. |
Re: 1946 ford grill gaurd did all of the grill guards have the lower bar?
|
Re: 1946 ford grill gaurd The Accessory Grille Guards were never available in Australia, however, as the lower bar supported the Licence Plate Holder, I believe that all 1946 Fords had this bottom bar, whether they just had the standard issue Bumper Guards, or the Accessory Grille Guard.

Re: 1946 ford grill gaurd What is it's value?
|
Re: 1946 ford grill gaurd You learn something new every day! I thought the bottom rail between the front bumper guards were standard, the picture "old ford2" posted shows cars without them. The license plate bracket on my '46 attaches to it. Does anyone know how the front plate would attach without the lower bar? What the picture does not show, is if the bumper guards had the holes for the lower bar already punched in them. I wonder if it has something to do like when the early car's after the war were shipped without bumpers and were put on at a later date at the dealer?

Re: 1946 ford grill gaurd I have a 46 Super Deluxe Coupe and it has a grill guard but I can't remember if it has Ford scrip on it or not. I haven't looked at it in awhile plus the fact I am out of town and it is still wrapped up from being re chromed. I can look when I get back home next week.
|
Re: 1946 ford grill gaurd It's correct there is no Ford script on the top bar at center. I've had about 20 sets of NOS '46 bumper guards over the years and all the fronts had the hole (square) in them. I was under the impression that all the cars had the lower bar between the guards to facilitate the front license plate mount as seen on most of the cars in the above picture. The few that don't have it is strange to me.

Re: 1946 ford grill gaurd I think I may have found a partial answer. In the 1938-1946 Genuine Ford Parts and Accessory Book (the Red Book), it shows the 1942 Front Bumper with the 11A-17768 Guard and License Plate Bracket Assembly. They are showing the "guard" as what is pictured on posts 11 and 13, the lower bar that the license plate bracket attaches to. In the '41 thru '48 V-8 Ford book it states, "the installation of the front license plate bracket was discontinued March 1st, 1946". Also, in the Evolutionary Changes for the '41 to '48 Ford, it states "the front license plate bracket shall be discontinued 02/28/46", close to the March date. I would bet that Ford had '42 bumper guards and plate brackets left over, remember no car's were built for the public in '43, '44 and '45, and installed them on some early '46 cars until the stock was depleted. Under the accessories section it lists 21A-18412, Guard, center Bumper Front but does not show a picture of it.

Re: 1946 ford grill gaurd Not all states required both front and rear tags. Maybe that's the reason.

My last v8 an early 47 had the lower guard. Car was NZ assembled from the Commonwealth Ford plant in Canada.

If you take a close look at this 1946 Ford Sportsman, you will notice two Slots for the Front Licence Plate. It would seem that this car was assembled in the middle of the change, as it still retains the cross bar. The Slots did not appear on early 1946 Fords. |
Re: 1946 ford grill gaurd My '46 Station Wagon is an April car and has the cross bar. I think that Ford was using the stock up and the Sportsman fell into that category that had both. I find it fascinating that as big a company as Ford was, they kept meticulous records on some things, and were lax on others. Another Ford mystery!

Re: 1946 ford grill gaurd Not sure if its worth anything. But I also got the bumper I took the grill guard off of but its bent. I do not think it has the slots In it so I guess all of the pieces came from a early production car. Any difference in the bumper irons or the splash apron? The car was a rust free 4 dr that was stripped down when I got it. The body is in the classifieds. Anything else special on the early production 46 cars?
|
Re: 1946 ford grill gaurd My 46 coupe has the cross bar and it also has the tool compartment in the trunk. I also took a 46 bumper off a 47 which I believe to be an early production car and it has the two slits in the bumper.

Re: 1946 ford grill gaurd In watching the attached movie I saw a 46 rolling off the line with just uprights but seconds later at 21:36 Ford is presenting a sedan to president Truman. Check out the grill guard. Did Edsel go out and buy an aftermarket guard?

Re: 1946 ford grill gaurd Edsel was a non combatant casualty of WWII but his dad Henry was still around for a year or so more. Henry Ford II was just getting settled into the position of running things around this time frame.
