1931 Phaeton how many were made and how many exist today? I seldom see another '31 standard phaeton like mine. They seem rare compared to roadsters or even deluxe phaetons. How many were built originally?

Re: 1931 Phaeton how many were made and how many exist today? I got one, paid $30 bucks fir it. 1958

Re: 1931 Phaeton how many were made and how many exist today? Royce, I have no idea the answer, but have a question for you. Where's your spare? Right side? That seems unusual.
A Bone, I'll give you $60 for it...come on, double your money! |
Re: 1931 Phaeton how many were made and how many exist today? 'Got a late '31 Standard Phaeton. So, that makes three that we know of. :)
According to the DeAngelis book, only 4,074 1931 Standard Phaetons were produced. This is only about twice as many made compared to the rarer Deluxe Phaeton in 1931! Marshall |
Re: 1931 Phaeton how many were made and how many exist today? That car is an identical twin to one in our club, even down to the color and sportlight.
|
Re: 1931 Phaeton how many were made and how many exist today? Royce,
Very nice car... :) |
Re: 1931 Phaeton how many were made and how many exist today? Yes it has a RH side mount. All four fenders were new old stock when Dad restored in in 1970. That's the one that had a well in it for a spare.

Re: 1931 Phaeton how many were made and how many exist today? I have one too.

Re: 1931 Phaeton how many were made and how many exist today? I have an indented fire walled std Phaeton body also that is currently on loan to the fellas at Ahooga A&T parts for them to explore the feasibility of reproducing the center section, rear section, and rear doors. This would give the opportunity for someone to build a complete reproduction body using Brookville cowl and Albrecht front doors.

Re: 1931 Phaeton how many were made and how many exist today? One in our MARC region.

Re: 1931 Phaeton how many were made and how many exist today? My gosh, it is Phil. How are you doing, and how is everything on the Ford Farm?
|
Re: 1931 Phaeton how many were made and how many exist today? I have one with dual side mounts, really fun car to drive!
|
Re: 1931 Phaeton how many were made and how many exist today? I think Phaeton drivers and passengers get the most attention while touring in these upcoming winter months, all wrapped up in blankets and wool hats.

Re: 1931 Phaeton how many were made and how many exist today? We ran across one in Dawson City (Yukon, Canada) on our summer tour this past year. The owner couldn't get it running, so being the good neighbors we Alaskans are, we spent the afternoon getting it going. If you look past the dust on it, it looked to be show-room fresh. The no start problem turned out to be crap gas that had been sitting in it for several years. Fresh gas and a little TLC and she came to life.

Re: 1931 Phaeton how many were made and how many exist today? I know I'll hear it from for the non-correct colors (55 Packard) and the white walls but I just had to post a picture of my Phaeton. Purist don't like it but I do.

Carl, The Phaeton in Dawson City is likely the sister to my 1930 Phaeton. Two Phaetons came to Fairbanks from Dawson City in 1959, the other car is still here, but rumor has it the the third one is still in Dawson City. Darryl in Fairbanks |
Re: 1931 Phaeton how many were made and how many exist today? I also have one. I called it rare and a judge told me it may Be uncommon but not rare . Kind of deflated me at the time but not anymore. Wayne

Re: 1931 Phaeton how many were made and how many exist today? Phil there is only one thing wrong with that photo - you need to find a hood and radiator shell that matches the patina on the rest of the car!

Re: 1931 Phaeton how many were made and how many exist today? A friend of mine owns a 31 two-door deluxe teardrop firewall. He claims it is only one of about 28 or 29 in existence, I feel like it’s a few more than that, closer to 50? but I’m not sure it’s fun to drive to the club though! When it’s not 6,000,000° outside.
Phaeton model did not age well. |
Re: 1931 Phaeton how many were made and how many exist today? Adam, should be at least a few hundred around.
|
Re: 1931 Phaeton how many were made and how many exist today? There used to be a bunch of phaetons in Monterrey Mexico, taxis that only came out in the evening. Dunno if they were 31's, dunno if'n they're still there or not.

Re: 1931 Phaeton how many were made and how many exist today? I have a 1931 indented firewall with dual spares
|
Re: 1931 Phaeton how many were made and how many exist today? I have a 1931 2 door Phaeton and also a 1931 standard 4 door phaeton
|
Re: 1931 Phaeton how many were made and how many exist today? So are there really numbers as to how many? Or did I miss that in the Thread. I have a two door and thought they were more rare.
|
Re: 1931 Phaeton how many were made and how many exist today? on the 180s, have always seen quoted to be around 300.
who really knows, but def more then 50. |
Re: 1931 Phaeton how many were made and how many exist today? There are two 180As coming up for auction just in the next couple weeks.
https://www.mecum.com/lots/DA0922-52...del-a-phaeton/ https://www.mecum.com/lots/DA0922-52...del-a-phaeton/ Plus this RHD std '31 phaeton with some questionable upholstery decisions https://www.mecum.com/lots/DA0922-52...del-a-phaeton/ |
Re: 1931 Phaeton how many were made and how many exist today? first two are beautiful Alex.
yes the upholstery is terrible in the 3rd photo, but auction price should reflect that. about 8 yrs ago on ebay, saw 3 come up, unrestored in the span of 3 months. as much as I like the 180s, cant help but think my 28 4 door phaeton is more practical. |

Only standard ones sold here and only 1930 models and almost all open cars with wood frame body. Not many sold. |
Re: 1931 Phaeton how many were made and how many exist today? 20-30,000 for a RHD in a LHD country? Seems a bit optimistic?
not at all. try and find one. the conversion isnt that difficult, though why anyone would convert at this time, is beyond me. My 28 is a Canadian export with rhd and I enjoy driving from that position here in the US far better then driving on the wrong side of the road..... which Aussies are known to do! :) |
Re: 1931 Phaeton how many were made and how many exist today? I have a 1930 Deluxe Phaeton. I heard there are about 300 Deluxe Phaetons left in the world, but I have no idea if that is accurate or not. Anybody know?

Re: 1931 Phaeton how many were made and how many exist today? I don't know if this is true or not, but I was told years ago by old-timers in the hobby that long after the Model A was no longer a new car, Los Angeles newspapers bought up all the used DeLuxe Phaetons they could find. They removed the top assembly, back seat and passenger's seat and then welded the doors shut. By that time, the wooden framework inside the body was old and rotting, so the doors wouldn't stay closed. (Always a poor design and weak place in DeLuxe Phaetons) Then newspaper bundles were piled into the "bathtub" car and dropped off at various newsstands around town. It was cheaper to do that than to use heavy trucks. Because a great number of DeLuxe Phaetons had originally been delivered in Southern California due to the nice year-round weather, there was no shortage of old, used Model A's of this body style to buy very cheaply. Lord only knows what happened to these heavily-modified DeLuxe Phaetons after they had completely worn out performing their final service to mankind! Has anyone here ever seen one of these welded-up Phaetons?
Can anyone verify whether this history is true or is it just another urban legend? I hope it can't be debunked because it makes a great Model A story! Marshall, late 1931 DeLuxe Phaeton, late 1931 (sad) Standard Phaeton, 1928 Phaeton |
Re: 1931 Phaeton how many were made and how many exist today? I have a 1928 and I'm finishing a 1931 deluxe two door.
|
Re: 1931 Phaeton how many were made and how many exist today? I was shocked a year ago, or so.
I make and restore the top assemblies on 180A. In a period of 18 mos, I made or restored 5 assemblies. I had no idea there were that many “under construction”. |
Re: 1931 Phaeton how many were made and how many exist today? I bet the pandemic kick-started a lot of stalled projects.
|
Re: 1931 Phaeton how many were made and how many exist today? I have a 30 standard phaeton that was a Canadian car. There is also a 30 2dr phaeton in town that is original, but a bit rusting.
