Never Too Old To Do Something Stupid

I did something really stupid today, and hope others can learn from it. I was burning sticks in my backyard fire pit and a plastic tarp covering something close by caught on fire. The fire was small but it was dripping burning plastic. I reacted without thinking and quickly gave the plastic one quick swat with my bare hand. It put the fire out, but the burning plastic stuck to my skin, so now I have blisters on 4 fingers and my arm, as well as plastic molded to my skin. The pain is letting up some now after 12 hours, but I'm sure the blisters will not be too comfortable for a few weeks.

I often carry a 2 liter pop bottle filled with water and a 1/8" hole in the cap to use as a fire extinguisher in my Model A. I should have had one by the fire pit.

Had a similar experience a few years ago. I ordered some samples of "fire retardant" aluminized reflective plastic sheeting for attic insulation. I put a match to the sample. Poof!
I was wearing shorts and had molten plastic stuck to my legs. What I learned: 'fire retardant' does not mean fire proof. It only means it is resistant to sparks. No resistance to open flame. Glad I didn't buy the $tuff. Still have a few scars.

Tom,
Burned ALL the skin off, from to my thumb to my elbow, from an exploding radiator. Used ALOE VERA, direct from the plant, covered it with an old sock & it DIDN'T even leave a SCAR & great pain relief!

Tom, you were lucky. It could have been much worse.
We ALL do stupid things. Most just don't admit it.
Watch out for infection.
Best to not cover blisters.
Keep them clean. (I have nurses in my family) :o
Hope your feeling better soon.

Re: Never Too Old To Do Something Stupid

Tom, Vin tin's right, watch out for infection. If you can find a silver (argentyria or colloidal silver) use that. Silver in various forms is commonly used in severe burn cases, and like Bill said , use Aloe Vera on it to heal it. Silver is a fantastic anti bacteria substance Google Colloidal Silver) and the aloe helps it to heal faster and lowers the amount of scar tissue formed.

Hey Tom, I've never met Wick, but looking at his picture makes me think that he may be a little ornery. If he can talk you into peeing on your hand, let us know. We could all use the chuckle! :D
Take care and get well!

Did you see the one the other day about the guy who tried to kill a spider on the door of his gas cap access by torching it with his cigarrette lighter??? Big ball of flame! They didn't say how bad the guy was burned, but suffice it to say he probably doesn't have any eyebrows. Apparently he had just taken the gas cap off to begin fueling.

Glad you still have your hand Tom. It will heal. Just don't make home made fire works. Mark.

Sorry to hear that, Tom. One of the worst burns I ever had was from holding a Roman candle that shot forward a couple of times and then shot backwards.
For that one I used some salve, called Silvadene, I think it was. Best stuff for a burn, but you have to have a prescription for it. Good Luck.

Re: Never Too Old To Do Something Stupid

Tom, I can't believe you did it, that was really stupid! But it does remind me of the time I made some homebrew black powder and put it into a piece of pipe and lit it with a saltpeter slow-burning fuse. After about a minute it still had not gone off so I peeked into the pipe.
The hair grew back in about a month.

I keep a roll of toilet paper just for writing down the stupid things I do. There is about a half roll left now.

Ditto on the Aloe Vera. Put it on right away and it is a lot better in the morning and no blisters!

Re: Never Too Old To Do Something Stupid

FWIW: Reply #9, may be unheard of today with so many prescription drugs on hand; but, a few rural cures worked.

During the days of doctor house calls, I had a teenager friend with a very terrible case of athlete's feet 60 years ago.

Per doctor's orders he wore sandals with white cotton socks which were stained with blood all day every day even though he was applying his prescription salve from a tube.

After 2 months of bleeding, his Dad made him come to my Dad's store to ask what to do.

My Dad told him it will make the young doctor mad, but he gave him a new biscuit pan and told him to pee in the pan and soak his feet for 10 minutes once a day.

On the third day, wounds were healing, after 7 days it was a definite cure of this growing and living fungus.

The young doctor dropped by to check and saw healed feet ...... everything was fine until my friend showed and told the doctor about the biscuit pan ....... the young doctor exploded ....... but, he later became my Dad's best friend.

Saddle sores were common on lean horses with high exposed backbones ...... after riding while irritating the infected sore every day the sore got worse and became incurable ........ pee was also the cure to heal this infection.

Just had to confirm ........... sounds strange today ....... but, appears Wick knows.

That's funny:p I wondered the same thing!!

Take care Tom, burns are nasty. Melted the skin off of a thumb one nite, playing with firecrackers in my youth. It took some time but w/ the Aloe Vera treatment you can't even tell now no scars or anything, and the A-V seemed to heal it pretty fast.

Strange as it sounds that cures a lot of ailments.

In Vietnam they always said that if a guy passes out from heat exhaustion and you didn't have any water handy, to pee on him. All over his head:eek: I've also heard it is a cure for jellyfish stings.

Cool water poured over the burn as quickly as possible is by far the best way to stop the pain and reduce blistering.

I grew up working outside on farms and doing stupid stuff. I learned a lot from the old timers. Like if you got a cut you better go find a pine tree and put some sap on it.
Glad the hand is ok.

Egg whites... sterile, lots of collagen and it dries to a protective bandage. I've seen it work on a scald where the skin came off. Yuck. -Chuck

It's OK Tom, I had an "argument" with my electric hedge clippers back in May and they won! Nothing serious that 7 stitches couldn't cure. Sometimes the instinct to move overrides the instinct to think about it before you move. Heal well.

Re: Never Too Old To Do Something Stupid

Tom, as has been mentioned several times here... watch for signs of infection and take the action needed. Scars are part of the auto hobby, so although not pretty too look at they do happen.
Stupid? I don't think so.. though I am sure if feels that way now. As Leo said " Sometimes the instinct to move overrides the instinct to think about it before you move." IMHO that does not equal stupid, just survival instinct. Heal quickly, we need your expertise.
