Show and tell. 4 Attachment(s)
A little show and tell what I did today. My 35 spent a few years in my shop in Fairbanks being neglected during my divorce. After that, it spent the last year being neglected after I got it down here to MI. I felt guilty about that so I dedicated today to babying the car and giving it the attention that has been absent for the last 3 or 4 years. With buffer in hand and a myriad of assorted expensive car care products...I went to work. As the day went on, I began to question my sanity. I sacrificed one of my fiancé's white tank tops to get the final polish on the car...she looked great in that T-top...I hope she doesn't notice! I then grabbed my tooth brush and with a bowl of soapy water...I detailed the engine. I think we have some spare tooth brushes...my teeth will be fine. I caught myself waxing the back side of the rear license plate...come on...everybody does that...right? Anyway, the car now looks presentable and it was great to finally get to do a couple laps around the block with it.

Re: Show and tell. beautiful car, you are a fortunate fellow!

Re: Show and tell. As John Wayne said " A man oughta do what he thinks is best "
Well done and a mighty fine 35'! Phil |
Re: Show and tell. Looking nice Kirk!! Come to think of it, I believe I sold you some parts for that car some years ago. I recall sending a large box of '35 stuff to Fairbanks, Alaska. I also believe someone sent me an article with the complete story on that car and what all you did on the restoration. It was the Alaska connection that triggered my memory.

Re: Show and tell. Capt., you did a great job! Definitely something to be proud of!!
|
Re: Show and tell. Really looks nice. Your dad would be proud.

Re: Show and tell. Looks like your car should have been at Motor Muster at Greenfield Village today! Beautiful car!

Re: Show and tell. JM35...if your name is John Mason then yes, you did sell me some parts and gave me a wealth of information. I have been indebted to you to this day for all the help you provided...thank you. A lot of water has gone under the bridge since we last talked and it's nice reuniting with you now. As you can see, the 35 survived the trip down from AK. It's nice to have some summer to do these things that I like to do.
LBS...my future father in law lives in GB. I didn't know about the show and I wouldn't have been ready for it...I am now. I've never been to a show in the lower 48...a little intimidating to me. The car is beautiful but there's some changes that my dad did to it that remain on it now. I don't want to go to a show and get beat up about those things. A lay-person would have no idea...and Alaska's full of lay-person's. I'm fairly new to MI and would love to get into the show circuit but don't know how I can find out about them and don't know if I'd be getting flack for having juice brakes and two wipers down low instead of one at the top. |
Re: Show and tell. Kirk,
Where were you hiding that beauty? I've been in Fairbanks for the last 18 years and never saw your car. And 35's are at the top of my wish list when it comes to old Fords. |
Re: Show and tell. Cap'n............... that '35 is stunning. Absolutely beautiful car I love it:) Looks great!!
Now, for pictures of the fiancee w/o the tank top you borrowed---------sorry I'm only kidding;) |
Re: Show and tell. Super Classy! Love it!

Re: Show and tell. looks like a productive day.....she's a beauty....congrats.....Mike

On the show thing, maybe you might want to consider joining the Early Ford V-8 Club and possibly a regional group that is located near you. Your car would fit nicely into one of the two touring classes or even the display class as well. The V-8 Club is high on preserving originality, but many of the members also own cars that are modified like yours, traditional hot rods, and some are also into streetrods. You can meet many like minded friends who are eager to share their knowledge and help you with parts you may need. There is still time for you to join the club and attend the Central National Meet in Brainerd, Minnesota next month if you could see your way clear to do that. I don't think many, if any, would nitpick at the changes you or your Dad have made on this car, but instead many would enjoy seeing this car just as it is now. |
Re: Show and tell. Ralph, I lived up on Moose Mt and was a member of the Vernon Nash club. Did a few shows at the Carlson center with both the 35 and 56. I didn't drive the car much...went on a couple cuises but kept a pretty low profile. Knew Willy Vinton and actually asked him to put the 35 in the new auto museum while I was getting all this personal stuff sorted out but apparently they didn't have any space. It's all worked out now.

Re: Show and tell. John, you probably saw the "what would you do" thread that I posted earlier this week. I was struggling with putting the car back to original (as much as I could do) or leaving it the way that my dad set it up. Money isn't the issue. I love the car the way it is and has been for my whole life. In Fairbanks, people saw a beautiful car...I'm worried that down here it's going to be nit-picking contest. Nobody knows the story with this car. It's the story that makes the car what it is.

Re: Show and tell. A day well spent! A real beauty! Thanks for sharing!
|
Re: Show and tell. Kirk, What John told you is true, the EFV8 Club has several show classes that your '35 would definitely be a strong competitor in. Don't for a minute think that those modifications will keep you out, and definitely will not draw snickers from anyone either. Take the Ferry across the lake and enjoy your car with several hundred other Fords of the era. (And the owners!)

Re: Show and tell. Wow Nice car ,the 35s always look good in black ,Ted

Re: Show and tell. Great car and story, be careful you don't get divorced before your married using the girlfriends tank top. Women are funny about these things,I nearly get divorced every time I dry my greasy mitts on the white towels in the bathroom. Cheers Tony.

Re: Show and tell. Outstanding job on a stunning car. Wish it was mine!
|
Re: Show and tell. Beautiful cabro, your dad did a good job. Leave it as is and bugger to any "nitpickers" but I doubt there will be many.

Re: Show and tell. Beautiful automobile! Shine On!!
|
Re: Show and tell. The "NITPICKERS" will definitely be a MUCH / MUCH smaller group then those that simply love the car.
DRIVE it / SHOW it > You have something to be very proud of. You can put my name on the list of people that love it !!! |
Re: Show and tell. Kirk, what John and Alan said is absolutely true. The Dearborn RG 67 of the Early Ford V8 club would welcome you and your car. Several of the RG members have hot rodded /V8s. I drove down to the the Eastern National Meet in Concord, NC with a friend who's got A/C in his '40 Ford Pickup. We've got a club picnic on July 11 at Murray Lake, just north of Ann Arbor, you'd be welcome to come as a prospective new member. The Early Ford V8 magazine alone is worth joining for. But don't stop there!

Re: Show and tell. I am also a member of the VLNAAC, been to a few of those shows. Too bad I never got to see the 35 up close.
I'll say hi to Willie for you! |

Capt Kirk ...............................
Your Cabriolet looks GREAT ! In case that you did not know, you have an early 1935 Cabriolet. They are fairly scarce. The easiest way to tell is the placement of the interior door opener. It is placed up close to the windshield post. They were later moved to the center of the door. That did away with the rope pull. I know this, as mine is an early one, too. Wish mine was done in leatherette instead of the fabric. MIKE :) (mikeburch) CLICK ON PHOTO TO ENLARGE |
Re: Show and tell. Capt.Kirk,
Great looking car, I am of course partial to 35 cabriolets but I am particularly interested in your (not your fiance's!) top. Looks a great shape and interesting stitching detail, would love to see and hear more about it. Gordon. |
Re: Show and tell. Sorry just found your previous thread on the cars history, a carson top, that explains it! still like to see more of it though.
|
Re: Show and tell. Mike, yeah...I knew it was an early model based on the location of the door handle. If I recall, I think the build date is Nov 1934

Re: Show and tell. 1 Attachment(s)
Well, in honor of my dad for Fathers day...a little more show and tell. Pic is of my dad, mom and oldest brother (I'm the youngest at 55)...the car in the picture is the car that I spent yesterday cleaning up
|
Re: Show and tell. 35 Cab...would you like me to take closer pictures of the top?
|
Re: Show and tell. |
Re: Show and tell. Safety items are only frond on when being judged as original. What you've done is considered exceptable for a street machine. Don't forget the shoulder and lap belts. I have them in my 47
|
Re: Show and tell. DD...I don't recall ever seeing them so they probably disappeared before I was born. I thought about getting some but I don't want to screw up the paint on the fenders.
|
Re: Show and tell. I'm not seeing any tail lights on the car but I do remember those "bullet" lights on top of the front fenders. Those lasted there forever. They weren't in the parts that I got from my dad when he shipped the car to me...and I knew they weren't original so I filled the holes.

Re: Show and tell. 1 Attachment(s)
The skirts look great, interesting again that they are full teardrop ones, I have usually only seen them on 36's, with the 35 rear fender having an up sweep I would not have thought they would have fitted. Mine are less elegant "Garwood" ones.
I would like to see more photos of the top when you get a chance. You are a lucky man to have that car and the connection with your dad. My dad helped me with my 35, took him out for the day for Fathers day. |
Re: Show and tell. Yeah, come to Brainerd MN to the Central National Meet. I will be there with my 40 wagon and would love to see your 35 up close. You would have a lot shorter drive to attend then I. Since it is a long haul I am trailering my wagon.
|
Re: Show and tell. Great looking car. I think the only one's who would nit pick are those who are jealous they don't have one as nice. The memories will last a life time., treasure them.

Re: Show and tell. I'm not ready to take the car on a road trip. I rebuilt the distributor and I think that's doing fine. I checked voltages after I was done...getting 6.17 volts to the upstream portion of the resistor and 2.7 at the coil. I just received my new resistor...if that's not the problem, I have a nice spare. If it's not the resistor, I guess the only other problem might be the coil dragging it down...if they can do that. The script coil has likely never been rebuilt so it could be due. Will need to build some trust in the car before I travel to a meet another state away. I'll trailer it until then. I'll be gone for 3 weeks starting july 2nd so I think I'll miss that meet but will try to make it to others.

Re: Show and tell. Beautiful car! Congratulations on a great build. Is the color Washington blue or Dearborn blue?
