motor/gas tank additives what(if any) is a good additive to keep things working for model a's not driven much
|
Re: motor/gas tank additives A little Marvel Mystery oil in the tank at fillup if its going to sit much. Definitely use premium no-alcohol gas if it is available in your area, it is here and I won't run anything else.

Re: motor/gas tank additives must be something to mystery oil,my dad whos gone now,was never without his mystery oil,his car and anything that had a motor got mystery oil,and seemed to run forever, guess I forgot that, thanks for reminder

My cars set for 6 to 7 months over road salt season, otherwise they get driven now and then during the summer. I don't drive just to be driving, but I would like to do some travelling to visit places I've never seen. I've never been to the west coast, and never driven along the east coast. I'd also like to do what's left of Route 66 before it's all gone. |
Re: motor/gas tank additives Snake oil.

Re: motor/gas tank additives Toms right about clean oil when storing. Along with that is when ever its started, and not going to be restarted soon, warm the engine up to temp plus some time. That helps evaporate moisture in the oil, ect that comes from combustion.

Re: motor/gas tank additives MM, Sea Foam are about the only things that could do some good that could be added to fuel.

Re: motor/gas tank additives Marvel mystery oil at fill ups....
|
Re: motor/gas tank additives I run Marvel Mystery Oil and a splash of generic lead substitute. All three of my A's seem to be happy thus far.
|
Re: motor/gas tank additives What about Morey's upper cylinder lubricant? Not sure if MMO is available here in New Zealand

Re: motor/gas tank additives Actually gas had lead by the late 20's, but Model A's and most of our older cars do fine without it. The plugs last much longer and the oil stays cleaner.
|
Re: motor/gas tank additives From past experiences - I use Marvel Mystery Oil to all of my mechanical machinery. I add 3 or 4 oz. to my full tank of gas in my "A", add a bit to my pressure washer, generator, lawn mower, etc. and if I remember....we (my wife and I) add a couple of ounces to our Harley Davidsons. It seems to keep fuel machinery from deteriorating and helps to keep fuel from varnishing-up from long storage times.

Re: motor/gas tank additives MM oil is fine from all I have spoken with, However I always use ATF (Any kind) and it has always worked wonders as as fuel stabilizer, and wont vapor lock on hot days. Cheap and works. Does it get any better than that?

It says roughly: In 1927 approx. 14%of cars were high compression (5 to 1 or higher). By 1928 it was 56%. 1929 77%. Don't think Henry believed in lead. |

One reason Ford Benzol was developed plus it was a Ford by-product? Benzol was only available in the Detroit area. A Ford Benzol gasoline globe is a rare and very desirable collectible. |
Re: motor/gas tank additives I routinely all Sta-bil to my gas tank after every fill up. I don't trust modern gasoline to remain stable while the car sits in the garage.

Re: motor/gas tank additives Fredski,
I don't know about Canada, but I hear there're a lot of snake oil salesmen in Florida. I understand they also sell real estate. Here in the California desert we make our own. Almost every one has a wringer from old washing machine. We just catch a rattle snake and put it through the wringer. Works great on just about anything on a Model A, e.g., gas, steer box, transmission, rear end, etc. |

Okay I get it now my wife explained it to me,, Learn something everyday Fredski |
Re: motor/gas tank additives I have used Marvel Mystery Oil in my car, per the directions on the container, for a number of years.
Car starts in the spring after a winter storage with no problem and the vapor lock problem stopped. Marc |

Re: motor/gas tank additives I NEVER tole Minerva that I NEVER added any Snake Oil, Panther Piss, ur ANYTHING, & she always ran GOOD!
I "think" most additives are just to make sum guy RICH & he can buy a 2 acre island, sit in the sun, drink XXX BEER, & scratch when the SAND FLEAS BITE! Bill W. |
Re: motor/gas tank additives On my way back from the 2014 MAFCA National in Washington my engine started to act like it was not getting enough fuel ("vapor lock"). The ambient temperature was above 100 degrees and I was going up hills. The engine temperature hit 195 degrees (it was normally 180 degrees). I opened up the GAV 2 to 3 full turns and the engine started running normal again. At the next gas stop I cooled off the carburetor and added some Mystery Oil to the gas. The engine ran fine until the next series of hills. Again it started to loose power. I opened up the GAV and was running fine again. My conclusion is that Marvelous Mystery Oil does not prevent "vapor lock" in my Model A.
