Better looking water necks? As I've said in another thread, I inherited a very nice 1934 Ford from my wife's grandfather. I'm trying to maintain it and keep it running as good as it looks. One thing that bugs me is the water necks. He performed the 59AB swap many years ago and built these water necks.
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m...psee786b56.jpg What other options are out there for this car/engine combo that look closer to stock? I don't want chrome, and I don't want universal convoluted radiator hose, it's tacky. |
Re: Better looking water necks? Check out the Gates No. 21253 hose. This should be what I'm running in my 1936 sedan. I've got a 59-style engine with the stock radiator.

Re: Better looking water necks? Most the tubes are going to be chrome or stainless.

Re: Better looking water necks? check out new hoses from Bob Drake.

Re: Better looking water necks? The rubber hoses will look much better I think. I think they'll flow better also.

This was my interpretation of a hose connection for the 59A in my 35 Coupe

Re: Better looking water necks? Here's what I did a couple of years ago.
Two 180 degree silicon hoses and two pieces of 1-3/4" exhaust tubing. Did the trick and still on there now. http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...33/33b0226.jpg If the Drake hoses cover the 33/34 application, I'd look at using those especially if I lived in the USA. Mart. |
Re: Better looking water necks? Bob Drake hose kit, part # HR-8262-BK. For 33-34 cars with 1937 to 48 V8 engines fitted. $60.00 for kit with two moulded hoses. Regards, Kevin.

Re: Better looking water necks? I just looked at the Drake kit. It comes with 4 hoses and 8 clamps etched with he Ford logo. For $60, I think that's the bargain I was looking for. Thanks for the input guys!

Re: Better looking water necks? Do you have a picture of how you supported the front motor mounts of the 59AB on the 1934 crossmember?

Re: Better looking water necks? I wouldn't change it the old guy put some time into those pipes and was most probally proud of his work, honour it as you are the cars trusted keeper

Re: Better looking water necks? Menace, I struggled with a similar question a week or so ago regarding my car. My dad made a few alterations to the car (including a 49AB). My question was whether or not to work my way back to original or keep it the way my dad made the car back in the 40's. The resounding response I got was to keep the car the way my dad set it up, honor his memory and enjoy the car the way he would want me to do. I could spend a lot of money (and that's fine) to change this car back into something that might be in contention at some of these shows but if I do, it forever erases what my dad did to the car 65 years ago. I value the long family history of the car more than adding a plaque or trophy to the wall. Ask yourself what grandpa would want you to do with it and give him the respect to do that. I finished my car and was able to send him some pictures shortly before he died and I know he was happy about it. He had full blown Alzheimer's and when shown the pictures of the car when I was done he said "that's my car". I would suggest doing whatever you want to do to your car and honor grandpa while you're doing that.

Re: Better looking water necks? I would leave them on. It looks like back in the day. They will be good the rest of your life and then some.

Re: Better looking water necks? Nothing really wrong with those homemade water tubes.
For those who have a '37-'48 engine w/stock heads, in a '35-'36 passenger car with stock radiator, the Gates 21253 one piece hose (available at NAPA) works nicely and looks stock. In some cases a rubber sleeve, also available at NAPA, is required at the head outlet connection. For those who are installing a '37-'48 engine in a '34 and earlier passenger car, your engine to radiator spacing is greater than '35-'36, so the Gates 21253 hose will not work. In your case the Drake kit being offered now is a good selection. I don't really care for the "one fits all" flex hose that's mentioned above because it tends to put too much force on the radiator inlet connection tubes which can cause them to crack at the tank connection. Of course this is all JMO. |
Re: Better looking water necks? For those of you that prefer the chrome pipes, back in the early eighties I was building a flathead powered 32 roadster, had those krinkle hoses on till one day I was at the scrap yard and say a pile of stainless steel swimming pool ladders just laying there begging to be re purposed. I cut out the section I needed, polished the pipe and had the cheapest, coolest set of water pipes in town! Rich
