As a lot of you know I have been diagnosed with ALS.
A few of you know I have been given the opportunity to partake in a research study called Brain storm research study to find a cure for ALS. I am one of only 48 people in the United States to be involved in this study.
The procedure is they harvest some of my Bone Marrow then rework some of the cells from the Bone Marrow and in 24 days it is reintroduced ( injected ) back into my spine & 12 spots in my right arm.
After that I am back and forth to the hospital on specific dates & time to track the progress of the procedure .
Up to today there has been 3 visits to the hospital to do all the work up's for the start of the procedure.
Today we went in for the Bone Marrow Harvest.
All went well & am not hurting at this point but we will see what the morning brings.
We are hoping that this Research study will have " SHOCKING "
( just to keep it car related ) Results.
Not just for me / I feel in my Hart of Harts this won't cure me but maybe slow the progress of this Disease.
My hope is that this helps in some small way to cure ALS in the 30,000 +
people that are affected in the United States.

As a side note Research is finding that the single LARGEST individual group that is getting effected is for some reason the MILITARY :eek:

Brother Bill: Margretha and I knew about the ALS, of course, but not about the study / treatment protocol. You and Lee are certainly in our prayers, and we will redouble them now for the Brain Storm study. You are a fine example for the study: warm hearted and ever the optimist....Our precious Lord has a plan and we know the best is yet to come!!

I am retired from doing 30 years medical research at the University of Washington. People like you are EXTREMELY important to further scientific understanding of diseases. Thank you so much for your participation. Best of luck to you.

This is just a thought , only halfway through my 1 st, tea this AM
What about in say a month or two we look at something 1/2 way between us.
( Date / Time / Location to be determined later )
Some type of 2 day deal.

Boy my brain is on fire here must be the real tea not the decaf type.
We put out the request to the Barner to join us & charge say a $10.00
fee / donation to go to ALS research.
Do you think there would be any takers ??

Thanks , Bill, for taking part in this research. I pray for a good outcome. After my 50 yr old daughter had a stroke, I took her to Baltimore for 2 different studies, made over 40 trips. It didn't help her much due to the neurological damage already done, but it will help others in the future. Well worth the effort.

Keep plugging Bill. I never met you but read a lot of your posts. I've got my own fight going, not ALS, but the only progress medicine seems to make is thru these experiments.
Its interesting they will use your own cells.

This is a brand new study just excepted by the FDA in the last 6 months.
It came from Israel where there study's have had shown good results.
Most of the FDA approved study's require a 50 / 50 test 50% new drug
50% placebo
The Brain Storm study they are allowing a 75 / 25 test 75% stem cells
25% placebo :)
So it is all Good We Know there will be a few set backs with some participants , and that will be hard to take / But it is all part of the learning curve.

Just a follow up.
Today I go back to Worcester UMASS Memorial Hospital to get the stem cells put back that Dana Farber removed from my bone marrow That was taken from my right hip last month.
I have to stay in the Hospital through Sat. so they can watch for any negative reactions to the procedure .
Then for the next 10 months we keep going back to check up on how it is effecting the ALS that has effected my body.
The first part of the week with Lee being my hands we go back into the garage for what I call " SHOCK THERAPY " ( rebuilding your shocks )
