Going to Puyallup for MAFCA Meet...

For those of you going west to the 2014 MAFCA National Meet FROM THE EAST SIDE OF THE CASCADE MOUNTAINS AND DRIVING YOUR MODEL A...Which route are you going to be taking?

There are at least 3 ways to get there:

Going North of Mt. Ranier on I 90;

Going through Mt. Ranier Park on Highway 410;

Going south of Mt. Ranier.

Which route are you taking?

Thanks.

Pluck

Pt Reyes National Seashore just north of SF.
Reds Headers at Ft Bragg.
Antique railroad ride at Tillimook Or. Also the famous cheese factory.
Museums, aquariums historical sites at Seaside,Or.
Antique trolley rides at Astoria and historical stuff museums.
If you head east to Portland from Astoria, there is probably more to see
other than scenery, than going up to Aberdeen and east from there.
If you are interested is watching racing there are several tracks along the way that will be running on weekends.
Once you get into the Puyallup area, Mt Rainier is probably one of the biggest
sight seeing attractions. You go right by my place going up there.

Pluck, are you trying to organize Model A convoys through the Cascades?

If I were driving a Model A from the East, I might be tempted to drive the Columbia River Gorge and then when through the Cascades head north.

If I am able to go, I will be driving a modern Ford with a trailer.

Pluck, I am taking my Martin-Parry woody this year. We are now in Bend getting it ready mechanically. Coming from the south using a trailer.

We're planning on bringing up our AA truck from the SF Bay area (on trailer); anyone headed up about the same time?

Dean,

I will be going with a modern Ford pickup towing a "open" trailer with my 1929 Coupe.

Have three choices of going to Puyallup from Walla Walla...see original post.

Re: Going to Puyallup for MAFCA Meet...

Just bought a 2007 Ford F150 and a tilt-bed trailer last week, Model A is getting a ride from Pasco to Puyallup. After that, we're going to drive the Model A onto a ferry and go to Victoria Island for a few days.

The Model A is going to have to wait until fall before it gets new paint, too busy driving it.

Re: Going to Puyallup for MAFCA Meet...

Pluck, I read your original post. Thought that you were talking about coming from the East, not necessarily coming from Walla Walla. That is why I mentioned the Gorge for those driving a Model A coming from the East.

I have driven all the roads that you mention. In the old days I would just drive up a Forest Service road and camped where I please. Times have changed, so have I.

This time I will overnight in Spokane which is about half way for me. Then I will continue on I90 since I, too, will be hauling a trailer.

See you there Pluck.

Hey Mark, do you have any more information about that Spokane swap meet?

I do enjoy a good swap meet. Had a great time with Larry Seaman one time at that meet.

Dean: It is at the fairgrounds on Fri. Sat. and Sunday before the meet. I am driving the coupe over and Dad is bringing my pick up and trailer with a cabby body to deliver. Usually a good meet, but can get hot.

What happens at these events? Are there vendors or a swap meet? I assume there is a gathering at the fairgrounds and some driving around?

Re: Going to Puyallup for MAFCA Meet...

I am going up with the Diablo A's from the bay area and the last I heard the itinerary is leave on the 9th (Wednesday), spend the night in Eureka/crescent city. Go upto 99 and then drop into Medford, OR and shoot up I-5 to Portland and spend the night. Next day into Puyallup. I missed the last meeting so I could be off a day or sleeping location.

Paul, there is a really good write up as to the events at the National on the MAFCA website. There is a link that will take you to the host club's site. But the short of it is: seminars to help keep the cars up, fashions, tours, car games, FOOD, sight seeing and generally lots of fun meeting new people.

I guess I should ask this question before I go.

Is a MAFCA membership required to attend this regional meet?

This is a MAFCA National Convention and yes MAFCA membership is required basically for insurance and liability issues.

Early bird newsletters and Registration forms are at the below site. Hope to see you there!!

Does that mean the general public is barred from the fairgrounds that week?

Re: Going to Puyallup for MAFCA Meet...

I'm leaving the 9th, driving the Slant up the coast from Santa Cruz to Anacortes, then down to Puyallup along the inland waterway. Now that I see Ben is bringing the Martin Parry, I'm tempted to drive my Raulang 150B, but frankly, woodies are not as comfortable as slants, especially for a trip that long. Same goes for my pickup. I first saw my (then future) slant at the 2004 national in Portland, so this will sort of be our 10th anniversary. I'm looking forward to meeting old friends and many barners.

The REAL answer is that much of the meet involves visiting around the hotel parking lots and visiting with those doing the same, and of course anyone off the street can wonder through the hotels during the hours that the hotels have unlocked exterior doors. I've done just that back when I had to function on the tight budget.

To actually enter any ticketed events you must register for the meet and that also requires club membership which can be added on the registration form.

Pete asked a good question however. Most national meets revolve around a host hotel. This is one of the few ever that will have many of the activities at a separate property. It would be good to know whether there will be a total lockout of non registrants from the fairgrounds.

jr-41ford 06-06-2014 10:09 AM

Re: Going to Puyallup for MAFCA Meet...

Since I am no longer a member of MAFCA, I will not be attending, but will go to Bremerton and take a ferry over to Victoria Island and spend a few days there.

I joined MAFCA several years ago, when I joined the local Model A club. The first year, I joined when they were allowing new members to join for free.

When I renewed my second year membership, I had moved and did a change of address. It appears someone had transposed my information and no matter how much MAFCA tried to correct the situation, my membership continued to have problems.

Third year, still had problems, MAFCA continued to try and fix the problems with no luck. After that, I never renewed.

I will try again in 2015, applying for a new membership using my nick name, which is what MAFCA suggested back then.

I will attend next years regional meet in Walla Walla, which is only 45 miles from my home. I will also register early. The trip to attend the regional meet in Puyallup was a last minute deal.

You all have a great time.

JR

The fairgrounds is not open to the general public, sorry but there are other venues going on. We are assigned the green gate for access and the fairgrounds staff requires us to control access to our registered participants.

There are several hotels near the Fairgrounds that would provide the opportunity for visiting around hotel parking lots.

Ok, no sweat.
People will just have to come out here to find out how I salvage stock cams with worn out journals. (Much cheaper than a new cam)
I can also be reached sometimes (2 days a week) at my in town "office" at the first table to the right of the fireplace at the Poodle Dog bar (Pup Room) in Fife. Hours, 1130 - 1400. Look for the hat.
