V-8 60 Guys What are you working on? I'm real glutton for punishment, and working on two. One a 38 or39 hotrod or midget motor with all American made parts. The other is all NOS. I have to be getting senile. It's taken 12 years to find all the best parts and I still don't have an engine together. Maybe this year??? The goofiest part is that I don't plan on putting them in anything. I just like them. What's your story?

Re: V-8 60 Guys I love them as well, have (5), but only running one in my 37 Tudor. Have early stainless steel sided ones, 37 iron sides, a 40. Even got one on an engine stand in my office.

Re: V-8 60 Guys I know what you guys mean...... I have a 37' "tin side" all original on a stand in my shop just to look at. My uncle has an iron side, doing the same thing. Fully restored motors never to go in a car. We sold a 40' and another that was a spare for a midget. We had bought 3 motors and a isles full of NOS parts from the estate of a midget racer that raced here in Detroit. The 47' Curtis was for sale too but for $25k. I sat in it and man those guys must have been beat up by the end of a race!

Re: V-8 60 Guys French Ford took them over. Im not very good at french, but I'm a member of the French Ford Vedette Club. This is what they write about the engine:
Le petit V8 En Amérique, le moteur 3,6 l devient trop gros pour une voiture populaire, il faut un moteur plus léger. En 1935, un moteur V8 à 90° avec soupapes latérales et arbre à cames central de 2,222 l (66,04 mm x 81,28 mm), 60 ch. à 3800 t/min, est étudié pour être monté sur la V8-60. Ce petit moteur ne se vend pratiquement pas en Amérique. En 1948, dans les nouvelles usines de Poissy, on étudie un moteur V8 de 2,158 l (66,04 mm x 78,8 mm), taux de compression de 6,8/1 et 60 ch. à 4000 t/min. Il est monté dans la F492 et la nouvelle Vedette. En 1950 on modifie l’arbre à cames et les soupapes, on porte le taux de compression à 7/1 et la puissance passe à 66 ch. pour 4600 t/min. Re: V-8 60 Guys I like the little buggers and critters also! I have two restored stock engines, two good running take outs, and three complete non running engines. I have a 37 two door slantback with a tin sided sixty not leaking, a 37 two door slantback and a 38 two door humpback. ..both with iron sided thrifty sixties..all three cars run perfectly...plenty of get up and go...but things definately slow down on steep hills...straightaways are good! Biggest maintenance seems to be the darn water pumps...have learned that during rebuilds the back of the plastic impeller and the back of the water pump need to be smooth or else there can be leaks...plus the factory recommended rubber rings and metal spacers need to be in place per specifications. With a modern five speed transmission or a two speed rear end these engines become very interesting!!!

Re: V-8 60 Guys I know that the torque range for our big flatheads is around 2400 to 2600 rpm. Where is the sweet spot for 60's?

Re: V-8 60 Guys I understand that a lot of these engines and parts are being snapped up by guys, putting them in custom motorcycles. Some are taking all they can find. It's a new business.

Re: V-8 60 Guys About 15 years ago I made a st of 1 piece valve guides for a fellow. He said the valves were made from stock early Ford engines and the onepiece guide was used to reduce oil burning. Can't find the name of this guy For those of you building these engines with split guides I suggest you pistall a thin film of RTV on the guide befor installing. I've done this several times and still do it on the one piece guide instead of the rubber "O" ring. Works like a charm, Simple.

Re: V-8 60 Guys French Ford (and then Simca when Simca bought Ford France in late 1954) used the small V8 until 1961. Only pre-war engines similar to US engines were used by Ford France and Matford (joint venture between Ford France and Mathis from 1936 to 1939), the first engines were Ford tin sides.
Post war engines used on French Ford Vedette and Simca Vedette were slightly different from the US engines. First generation of Ford Simca Vedette, engine cubes 2.351 cubic cm and develop 80hp. After 1961, Simca Brazil still used this engine on brazilian models with increased engine displacement and dual carb set up. I have 2 of these engine, one stock in my 56 sedan and one modified (big bore brazilian pistons, porting, dual carb and dual exhaust) in my 56 coupe and both are running very well. Will send pictures when I 'll be home. |

Re: V-8 60 Guys Update! My hot rod motor is finally coming together. Bob Baxter at Baxter Ford is building it for me. He is one of the best builders around and does beautiful work. I'm hoping it will be finished by the end of the year. It's going to have lots of bling and go fast goodies, including a pair of perfectly matched large logo 81's restored by Uncle Max with polished stainless parts. I can hardly wait to see the final results. I can't make up my mind on what to do with the NOS engine yet. It has never been assembled. For now I'm going to build a display table in my shop, and just look at it in its virgin state. I've never seen or heard of another one like it. What would you guys do with it? All opinions welcome. I just re-built this 37' "tin side" last week for display in my shop. I've sold four other 60's over the last few years including a marine conversion. Around three years ago I bought a collection of them and NOS parts from the estate of a midget racer here in the Detroit area. His son said that every vacation they went on (back in the 60's) his dad would stop at every Ford dealership they passed and buy all the 60 parts they had left. I kept this one and my uncle rebuilt one he had for his shop. They always attract attention and start a conversation.
