R U Serious

I just had some jerk call me at 11:30 pm to tell me that I ask "dumb" questions on the Ford Barn website. I was so upset I hung up on him without finding out who it was. I have had conversations with some in the restoration hobby community that have said that Ford Barn people can be arrogant and like a good ol' boys club and that they will not use or participate on the site. I have an MBA, served in Viet Nam, raised two kids with college degrees and find it insulting that my questions about rebuilding my '38 Ford are "dumb". I would ask that the jerk that called me identify himself on the Ford Barn web so everyone can know what a cancer there is to a website that offers to promote the hobby. I do not understand how someone would go out of their way to be insulting, if you don't like "dumb" questions then ignore and move on.

Re: R U Serious

The only dumb questions are ones left unasked. That's pretty extreme behaviour, and to be honest it suprises me. I have found the Barn to be friendly and helpful. I would like to think the offender is not one of the regular posters, but who knows.
Don't take it personally, all internet forums require participants to have a thick skin, and all internet forums have a small percentage of keyboard warriors. I guess it's the nature of this modern world.
I too know a lot of people who refuse to have anything to do with forums, and when this sort of nonsense occurs I can see why.

Two things seem to be obvious, you posted your phone number here somewhere and you don't have caller I.D.

Re: R U Serious

You can retrive the # if you have caller ID on a land line OR if received on a cell phone it will be there. Then get on "free white pages" web site and type in the # in appropiate box and it will hopefully get you a name and address from that. I do this all the time finding addresses and or phone #'s. ken ct.

Max, I just went back and read maybe a dozen of your posts and saw nothing that resembled a dumb question. Keep 'em coming and happy V8ing! The guy who called you has the problem. Let it roll off your back and don't worry about it.

Max, because of the late hour he called it sounds like he went to the next extreme past the rule, "do not drink and post."

That was my thought, Saturday night, too much to drink, loser setting at home on the puter!

You just found that 1% in the Barn, forget about it.

I really believe the as--o-e who called you is, by far, in the minority here. If someone called me at 11:30P and raised Cain about something I'd posted, I'd be upset too. That said, consider the source and go on. One of the 'Barn's strengths is the depth of experience offered by the participants. Glad you're here.

keep the dumb questions coming! They always help others that were to afraid to ask the same question.

Re: R U Serious

Don't worry about it. Lots of assholes in every hobby. If I gave up every time or the first time some nut job stirred up drama I would have quit fooling with junky old cars along time ago. Its the positive people that make it worth dealing with the clowns.

Lots of drama queens on the hamb compared to here but what I see is most dissappear as quick as they appear never have anything to ad or just flea market whores looking to scam parts to re-sell

Someone that would do that, is too cowardly to admit/identify himself on here.
Keep doing what you are doing..do not give this A hole any more power (and let your phone go to voice mail late at night).

A valuable lesson learned: Anonymity on the internet isn't just for bad guys, it's for the good guys. This is why I boycott Facebook. I think it's ridiculous how people expose themselves.

Consider the source and move on beyond it. No question is a dumb one if you got the answer you wanted. Hopefully, the Jerk will see these posts and get very embarassed by his stupidity.

I have asked some dumb questions also, so far Barner's have been tolerant. Grateful for the help I have received.

Max, Sorry to hear that.

Suggestion... Don't use your real name and location when posting.

If your listed in the phone book it would be easy to find your number. I found you have to pay NOT to be listed.

LOL, i think i resent the west coast jerk comment, its left coast jerk thank you, LOL and there is only one person on here that does that, he tormented a couple of my friends till they found out who he was and stopped him, hes still on here but i thought he stopped being an idiot, guess not

It took about 5 minutes looking through your old posts to find your phone number. There are some angry unpleasant people out there. Sometimes its good to be a little anonymous on forums.

MAX - I agree with the above posts: For those in the know, what you encountered was someone with nothing positive to add, and no ability to discern the value of continued learning......there are many who may have THOUGHT about the question, and when the answer is provided by one of our resident experts........MANY of us have an "A-HA!" moment. Welcome home, Brother. (And please keep asking, so that OUR education may continue!)

Re: R U Serious

I learned long ago to never start a " I have a dumb question to ask". In Navy Sub school an old (probably 40) WWII war patrol Chief started by consoling me, " Sailor there are no dumb questions ever asked only really dumb farm boys like you that ask them". After the whole class got a good laugh at my expense,he apologized (sorta) and said he gets that one in on someone in every new class. It was funny back then, probably would send him to "sensitivity training" today.

Re: R U Serious

Hi Max, I'm pretty sure I woulda gotten fired up about that too! I know SO LITTLE about these old flatheads and the FordBarn is like... Unspeakably valuable!

I'm blanking on the handle, but one of the regular posters has a tag line to the effect "I don't remember doing something to please someone else."

My job is as a classroom instructor. I'm sure every day at work I do something that someone will consider as being unhelpful, as you were accused of being. It's just a fact that whatever you do, you could be Superman, and you can't keep the whole world from occasionally getting a wadded up set of panties.

I've learnt to be comfortable in my own skin and to recognize that there will be a portion of the universe that will consider me a breathtaking fool! I consider that to be their problem and for sure don't lose any more hair over it.

So that's my take. You didn't ask for advice, but... Keep doing what you've been doing. Just on the surface, you are opening threads that are leading to meaningful discussion, and that's in no way something to be called out for. But beside that, keep having fun with the '38, sharing your experiences, and remember pictures are always a hit around here.

-VT/Jeff

P.S. I didn't serve in the military, sometimes I think I have a little regret there. Thank you and all your friends (and all those reading) for what you did, and sacrificed in hundreds of ways, in the service of the United States of America, our country. Thank you.

Re: R U Serious

Thanks for all of the encouraging feedback. I was pretty hot when I wrote the R U Serious message. I have asked you guys for feedback and help and have gotten some good helpful tips and I truly appreciate it. I am an educated man but I am also smart enough to be dumb enough to ask for help. Again thanks for the support. 99% of you guys are great!! What you have posted is a far better response to this A hole than I took the time to address with him. Hope he realizes that putting others down doesn't make him look "smart".

THANKS, Max

My 2 cents worth.

Now you see what happens when two cousins marry!

You are doing just fine in the Barn.

How boring does your life have to be to call someone and complain about their posts. I love this site but don't spend all my waking moments thinking about it. I'll bet he was a hall monitor in school.

Re: R U Serious

When I first got into engines and racing I asked allot of stupid questions, but I got answers from some and ignored by others. Some thought they were stupid. Well to them they might have been stupid, but to me it was important. To this day I learn form ALL the barn members about things I thought I knew, but they made me think. I feel my job is to give others my experience so they don't make the same mistakes I did,

Re: R U Serious

Ole Ron, you are so right, us old guys are not going to be around forever, its important for us to give the new guys all the information each of us have, every one does not have all the info on these old cars, but all of us together have all the info any one is going to need, so pass yours on and then sit back and watch the new comers devolep, thats a very satisfying feeling

Had a similar thing happen on hamb. 1st time I went on! Tried to reply to "wanted" ad. Was told "dont have those privileges". Started a thread to figure it out. Was told "duh.......dead the rules" its amazing how a few bad seeds can ruin things. I will continue to ask dumb questions in order to learn everything I don't know about this hobby. For those of you helping us dummies...thank you.
