Saw some green drips on the garage floor. Then found that I was down about two inches of coolant. Replaced a leaky engine block petcock. Cleaned up the mess on the underside. Neither Home Desperate nor Lowest Lowes had one, but ACE Hardware to the rescue!

Re: What did you do today that was flathead V8 related? Had to be towed home about 6 weeks ago when the Columbia on my '41 Ford Special Business Coupe failed to shift. Wouldn't go into high, wouldn't go back into low. Car no go. Parked it in the driveway and didn't look at it for a month. Looked at it last weekend and found that the bolts were loose on the vacuum valve assembly. The actuator never acutated because it was so out of alignment. Tightened the bolts and realigned it last weekend. Got it back in gear so it would drive. Too beat to test shifting. Today (this weekend) I took it for a test drive and shifted it twice back and forth from low to high. Everything perfect. Glad to have my car back!

Re: What did you do today that was flathead V8 related? A few days ago replaced the battery with a new one. next day the new battery was dead. decided to replace the regulator. I have negative ground so polorized it. Ran rough I had a spare rebuilt generator put that on and replaced belts as long as I was in there. ran rough and flooded. Left it to the next day wouldn't start. Put a different coil and condenser readjusted the carburator , turned the key it popped right off. Happy day.

Re: What did you do today that was flathead V8 related? Today i stripped a C69A that I built up for a friend a number of years ago.We went to a swap meet last Sunday, I followed his 39 Merc in my little 35. I noticed his car smoking a little bit from time to time, but following him down a mountain pass , every time he put his foot on the throttle, man, the smoke was horrendous!! I thought he'd blown some rings. Pulled the engine on Monday, finally got it stripped today. Transpires, gudgeon pin circlips on both rear cylinders had broken, both rear cylinders need to be resleeved, new pistons required, full floaters on that journal hammered out; no bearing material left.... 239 engine bored .125" over. It'll need bits....

Out for a test drive after working on the carb. Just had to stop and see if it was true what they say about their hot dogs :-)

World's best? That would be a stretch. But they were good. Nathan's all beef on a steamed bun with mustard, onions and relish. Pretty darn tasty! |
Re: What did you do today that was flathead V8 related? i spent some unproductive time on two things.
1) i'm getting popping (unburnt fuel igniting somewhere between the heads and the muffler) in the exhaust. i can actually faintly feel it with my hand at the exhuast tip when it pops. i suspect it's in the crossover pipe but i can't see it. but no matter...i've order a brand new exhaust system and when installed i can eliminate the exhaust system as the cause if it persists. 2) the aftermarket turn signals on my '41 are flakey. i'm trying to convert to LEDs but it's been a struggle. i think i made some progress today in that it was intermittant and now i've got them to the point they don't work at all. you may think that this is a step back, but it will be easier to diagnose the problem now that i have some consistency! :) |
