I prefer the white walls. It's great to be able to see such a comparison.

To me certain styles wear WW well, like the open bodies. The large bodies seem nice in black walls, but WW could complement certain colors. Good, bad or indifferent.

So, I'm not in the market. I inherited the WWs that are on my original E28 Phaeton when I bought it, and they're still in good knick. I don't mind them. I think they're kind of cheeky/pretentious!

Now let's get back to the opinions!

Posting the words white walls on this blog is like yelling Frau Blucher in Young Frankenstein, the horse get unsettled at the sound.

Re: White Walls (Just a question not trying to start a debate)

Of course you can always seek public opinion -
doing a 'Survey' in the Mall Parking Lot.

Here is how to do it :

- four tires to be mounted - two black walls and two whitewalls
- Passenger side: Whitewall on front wheel, Blackwall on Rear wheel.
- Driver's side: Blackwall on front wheel, Whitewall on Rear wheel.
- Drive to a large Mall and park in the parking lot, close to a main entrance.
- Have a Box Lunch, chips, drink, and a good book or Lap Top Computer.
- Have a "Score Sheet" (Survey) with ink pen handy.
- As you engage in the many conversations you will inevitably have through out the day, invite the passer-bys & admirers to give their opinions on your 'census' sheet.
- When the Sun sets, and both your sandwich and your 'flock' has flown, crank up your flivver (I know it has a starter - but you may have an audience who have expectations) and return home to your 'Man Cave'.
- In your privacy, do the tally. If you like the results - and it agrees with your choice, then you can take it to your wife to show that the public supports you. If the results are NOT what you like, and IS what you wife likes - burn the paper !

And go inside and help your wife paint the Living Room WHITE !

Re: White Walls (Just a question not trying to start a debate)

If you enjoyed your time at the Mall parking lot, you can repeat the experience the following weekend. Only this time have both of the whitewall tires on the same side, both blackwall tires on the opposite side. It might make for a 'purer' test result.

And for interesting and informative reading, you can bring the NEW edition of the MARC/MAFCA Restoration Guidelines & Judging Standards !

Re: White Walls (Just a question not trying to start a debate)

It all depends on the car. I think 30-31 cars look better with WW than 28-29's. But that's my opinion and you all know what they say about opinions (everyone has one and most of them stink!).

It depends on which vehicle. Owners choice!

Re: White Walls (Just a question not trying to start a debate)

the line was drawn in the sand long ago.

Consider, tho, that these are depression-era cars and not too much fanciness was going on then....people were starving and out of work.....and jumping out of hi-rise windows

DougVieyra 12-23-2016 02:23 AM

Re: White Walls (Just a question not trying to start a debate)

This is not about then - it is about now.

I know what the cars looked like in the depression years - not pretty. No need for us to keep our cars that way.

So now the question is about the car and the owner of today - not during the depression. The question is rarely about 'authenticity' and 'blue point' show 'correctness'. It is largely about, as has been said over and over again, personal taste.

It sure would be nice to only hear about this question once a year. Preferably when I am out of town.

Hilarious. I only started this thread as a joke, expecting that no-one would really reply, but just grimace! We've reached 45 posts, almost enough for a fence!

And nothing has been discussed that is new or wasn't discussed many times before. This post was not a joke but it was a total waste. Wayne

Re: White Walls (Just a question not trying to start a debate)

Here's another influence on my decision-making process...

Back in 1997, I was getting my 1941 De Soto ready for the road. It needed new tires.

To my dismay, I discovered that the only sources for 16" passenger-car tires were the "antique tire" merchants (Coker, Universal, etc.). ( I was not about to put 8-ply truck tires on the car, not that those would have been any cheaper.)

So, now I'm price-shopping for "antique tires"...

To my surprise, I discovered that Sears (at that time) could get Goodyear WWW All-Weather Diamond Tread tires - which were a factory-supplied tire on my car ( either WWW or BW ). They weren't the cheapest option even then, but I figured, if I've got to pay through the nose for antique tires, I might as well get "factory correct" (since they were available).

The successive replacement tires for this vehicle have been Lesters or Firestones, both for price reasons, and the diamond-treads are noisy-running tires.

She's still wearing WWW's....

I might as well throw another log on the fire here. My Town Sedan has black rims. My current set of white walls, all 6, are bald. I took advantage of the deal Coker Tire is offering: free shipping and a free shirt on orders of 4 or more tires. Happy wife=happy life. She wanted white walls.

I already have white walls in my family room. The color matches the cedar planks above my fireplace. The walls in my dining room are off white.

I guess I have a thing for white walls!! ;-)

Ever the Contrarian...

I prefer my white walls either as garage rollers or sprayed black with a product sold at Firestone tire dealers.

Step plates are better used as wheel chocks.

Stone guards hold just the right amount of KingsFord charcoal for grilling !

Ya, they don't get any plainer than your avatar. Why didn't you paint the rims black?

My model A had ww tires with orange wheels on it when I bought it. I needed new tires and I panted the wheels black and went with Black walls. I like WW tires but think my car looks better with Black Walls. Just my 2 cents. I have my wife's permission to say this. Johnny

A. Lots depends on "who" one is trying to impress with whitewalls.

B. With magazine(s) or actual photos of Model A's, with different tires, ask several individuals which do they prefer; for example,

1. Ask both young and senior females; and,

2. Ask both young and senior men.

3. Finally, ask your wife ..... she is in charge .... so do the answers in 1. & 2. above matter?

C. Please let us know what you decide to buy .... thousands of ears are anxiously waiting for one or several individual's "correct" answer.

I think the correct answer your looking for is to be happy with himself and not anyone else.
Or it is up to the owner

Just as I suspected. I almost mention as such on my last post , but thought better of it. Like you, I wanted to see just how far this rabid dog would run. This WhiteWall Dog does have amazing resilience! Guess it just goes to show the passion we all have about our cars. And for some, our home's white walls.
