All the way up for start, down for drive unless climbing a hill.

Works with a stock head. High comp' is another story.

So how steep or long does a hill need to be for you guys to retard? Or you don't retard for hills?

I usually retard for hills even though have never heard my motor ping. It is kind of a feel for me. Usually if the motor sounds like it is starting to slow/bog down some is where I play with the lever.

I have a tachometer which helps. If I get down around 1000-1200 on a long hill I will retard 2 or 3 clicks.
