Clinch Nut Installation
How are the D shaped clinch nuts installed?
I need to replace several 10-32 Clinch nuts in the top of the door of my 1928 Coupe. The nuts are removed and I have new clinch nuts, but no idea how to get them to "clinch".

Re: Clinch Nut Installation
We buck then in with a rivet gun and a flush rivet tool, ....or in areas where we cannot get directly behind it, we will TIG weld them in on the front side.

Re: Clinch Nut Installation
It does not take much to weld them in place. If your MIG is set right and you use an autodarken helmet you should be fine. I put a few in with a mig as I could not set them with a hammer. I did not get a TIG till much later.
Keep in mind that they are covered on the face. They do not have to be picture perfect to function and they are always covered. |

I used a MIG welder, just 2 or three little tack welds on each. Some photos: http://www.dougbraun.com/model_a_gal...g2_itemId=3215 (yes, some of the spot welds are absymal...) Doug

Re: Clinch Nut Installation
This may sound stupid but make sure they are steel.
I got some that turned out to be plated brass or bronze and melted as soon as I hit them with the Tig, I ended up just soldering them in.
