Rear Bumper on Pickup
My rig is a late 31 Pickup with a steel top. It also has the narrow bed. Now my question is; How does one attach a rear bumper. I've seen numerous pickups with rear bumpers, but can't find any documentation / pictures showing just how this is accomplished. Any info / pictures would be appreciated.

Re: Rear Bumper on Pickup
Try doing a search as this has been discussed previously. Originally no rear bumper. Does your p/up have an indented f/wall. Reason I ask is I passed on a steel top w/indented f/wall because it had a new narrow bed on it. I'm under the impression that a steel top w/indented f/wall had a wide bed. This truck was in fantastic shape but to put a wide bed on it would have been an additional $2500 plus shipping, yes I know I could have sold the new narrow bed but wasn't in the cards at the time.
Others will chime in I'm sure. Paul in CT |

Re: Rear Bumper on Pickup
I put a rear bumper on a 30 RPU by welding (splicing in)a 3" piece of spring steel in a set of rear bumper brackets. I don't remember what body style the bumper brackets fited. The spring steel came from a rear spring "helper" of a Toyota pickup. I doubt the impact capability was equal to that of a regular bumper but it looked very nice and appeared that it was a factory installation. The bumper bars extended past the tail gate by about 1 inch.

Re: Rear Bumper on Pickup
Not to butt in, but seeing you guys are talking bumpers. Did pickups ever come with rear bumpers? Reason I ask is I have some rusty bumpers that came with my 31 and the brackets are 2 piece and about 3' long. Could these be for a 31 Truck?

Re: Rear Bumper on Pickup
I put a bumper on my 29 huckster which is a "horse of a different color" but it turned out to work out real nice. (If you overlook the fact that you can't see the licence plate) I used just a regular 29 bumper with all the attachment hardware but had to make spacers to put between the attachment brackets and the bottom of my huckster body. (if that makes any sense). If you would like any info of what I did, PM me and I can send some pictures.

Re: Rear Bumper on Pickup
Here are pictures of my rear bumper on my 28AR RPU:
Notice how I extended the repro bracket to get low enough. I welded up the bracket from bar stock. I happened to have a cut off original bracket(the curvey part) to attach the bumpers to. I also put the LED trailer lights so I could be seen while driving. Not original but I like it and happened to have two extra rear bumpers. Car is up on my lift with the drivetrain out now to install rebuilt motor, 39 transmission, and Mitchel OD. Just put the 28 plates on as well. |

Re: Rear Bumper on Pickup
My understanding of the late 31 pickups is, hard round cab, square bed, never have heard of a wide or narrow bed, whats the facts on this, also the rear fenders are late 31 only to fit the pickup no other fits, of which I'm looking for a set.

Re: Rear Bumper on Pickup
Clyde, looks like you used some front bumper brackets and blacksmithed them to hold the bumperetts. Looks strong. Bob
