Starter support bracket - needed or not?
Replacing the starter on my '34 and the new one came with a cautionary note about installing a starter support bracket.
My starter has never had a support bracket on it ...do I really need one? |

Re: Starter support bracket - needed or not?
The support bracket came into use later than your car, the need unknown then. Torque from the starter can twist the bendix away from the flywheel gear, jamming or otherwise damaging either or both. Being that the support is visible, your choice if you have your car point judged, but the brace certainly is needed on all flatheads.

Hello Tom, My belief is that Alan is correct. It is not 'correct' for your year, but, I'd vote yes, put it on.

Re: Starter support bracket - needed or not?
If you want to drive your car with any degree of regularity, not just on and off the trailer, you should use the starter support bracket.

Re: Starter support bracket - needed or not?
Most old Fords don't have one but it adds support for the starter, good thing to have. G.M.

If you look at them too hard it will burn the paint off. That's why " Evil Eye Fleegle " is never allowed on the concourse. (I know, half of the barners will not know who I am talking about.

JMHO, but as long as the two mount bolts never get loose, you don't need it. But then again, how often do we check to see if they are tight?

Re: Starter support bracket - needed or not?
You may have to bend the bracket a little to make it fit ( I had to on mine) but definitely use it.

Re: Starter support bracket - needed or not?
In addition to providing additional support, they also provide an excellent means for electrical grounding. With these old cars, you can never have too many grounding points-especially with 6 volts.

Re: Starter support bracket - needed or not?
Can you imagine an engineer at Ford saying to his boss "We really don't need this part but lets put one on the next ten million cars since it would be nice to have just in case"?

Re: Starter support bracket - needed or not?
If your starter ever sticks you will wish you had put one on. Iwent thru that when I first acquired my 34 5W. I made one ,easy enough to do, & installed it . Have not had a problem since. That was some time back maybe 7 years ago almost 8.

Re: Starter support bracket - needed or not?
I made one out of a soup can. The starter had more power due to a better ground.

Re: Starter support bracket - needed or not?
Averaging 2,500 miles a year, you shouldn't have any problems with anything... That's just over 200 miles a month or... under 60 miles a week, or around 7 miles a day... In my mind, that's not enough driving time to evaluate anything, on any vehicle, with respect to reliability and/or durability. I'm just sayin'...

No, he was in Lil' Abner. As you are older than dirt I thought for sure you would remember him and his Zoot Suit. LOL
