i wonder if your cab mount is rotted out underneath or has some structural problem. this looks like a support for that kind of an issue
the longer stud on the top was probably used to hold something
just a pure guess

I can't tell from the photo, does the bracket extend underneath the cowl?

Both sides have the bracket added, so it's as Mitch said, I'm sure. It does look like the brackets bend and go under the body mount as well.

Have you had the car for long? I recall a thread some time ago with pictures showing the same or very similar braces.

It looks in part like a "farmer fix" for cracks around the front body bolts. the cracks weren't uncommon which is why Ford changed the reinforcement in that location in October 1930.

I wonder if those brackets were sold by places like Western Auto or JC Whitney.I've seen a few of them, and owned one car with them.Mine looked too nice to be hammered out in the backyard,it had nice bends, perfectly drilled holes, looked like a factory installed part.I worked on a Tudor last summer for somebody that had them, but those were shorter than the ones on mine. Those look like manufactured ones also.I have a doodlebug with them on it,but I never looked at them too close.

Mine look VERY professional!

I inspected the body and found no rust, maybe it was preventative?

I believe if you look carefully inside at the curve down from the face of the firewall down to where the front body bolt is you will find a lateral crack or separation. It was originally continuous.

I had found a similar fix on the cab of my AA. Over built brackets to make up for the missing front cab mounts.

The only thing I've seen mounted in those locations before were sometimes the odd accessory oil can. The gauge of the steel bracket though would be sort of an overkill if it were for those purposes I would think.

I agree, thats exactly what it is. I've got a similiar rig on Gus my rusty 29 tudor. I use to repair a lot of wrecked Mack trucks. The new model R front ends that I would get had two nice L shaped thick metal brackets on the pallets that they came on. I always saved the brackets When I got Gus in early 93 , he had sit outside and hadn't run in over forty years. The wood cowl blocks were long gone. I just wanted to get him running and driving without getting into any heavy body work. I raised the cowl and welded a couple of the L shaped brackets and made a temporary repair.
