Rust Removal Products, Anything New?
I saw a post for a product called Rust911 and they claim it's great. Others say Evaporust, Oxalic Acid, Molasses, Vinegar. From what I've read, all these work in varying degrees. Is there anything really new here? Is there a post or review that rates these products based on their success?

Re: Rust Removal Products, Anything New?
I am trying Evaporust on some rusty nails right now. I put the nails in last night and am going to check it shortly. This is my first time using this product.
I never heard of Rust911 until yesterday when I saw it mentioned here. I've used molasses with success, but it takes a week of hot sun beating down on my dark blue tub of molasses. I was very happy with the results. I tried vinegar for 30 days in my cooling system and was also happy with the results. It also took a good backflush with a sump pump to remove all the loosened rust flakes. I used electrolysis with very good results also. This took one or two days to clean a very rust pitted Cub Cadet wheel in my mom's laundry tub. |

Tom,
I tried Evapo Rust some time ago and found that with vinegar I got a much better bang for my buck. Evapo Rust is quite expensive. That's just my experience. Chet |

From the information I have gathered, molasses and Evaporust have the same thing that eats the rust.

Re: Rust Removal Products, Anything New?
I agree with Growley Bear that vinegar works well and is about as cheap as you can get for us frugal folks. It works even better (faster) when it is heated. I use a crockpot on the low setting (not boiling) and it works much faster. The problem is you can only derust what will fit in the crockpot. I tried Evaporust in a heated crockpot and it worked very well also, but at a much higher cost.

This is for the crock pot vinegar cookers. Can this be done inside the garage with the door closed or are we creating some toxic fumes in this process?

Try the RUST911. It's about the same as Evaporust except it's concentrated. therefore cheaper to ship, and disolve it in a gallon of water.

I too, am a vinegar fan. I tried it on several projects, luggage rack, cast iron griddle and log chains and it really worked. Be ready to coat them with something immediately though or they will startt to rust in seconds.

Re: Rust Removal Products, Anything New?
I just pulled my 50 rusty nails out of the DeRusto after 24 hours of soaking. It worked well for the most part, but half the nails could stand to be in for another 24 hours.
Vinegar in a crock pot at 170* for a few hours does a good job of removing rust, so I don't plan to buy the expensive DeRusto. |

Re: Rust Removal Products, Anything New?
I like evaporust. It dissolves the rust and doesn't leave any residue like Ospho does. I used it to salvage the glove box door hinge on my 36 woodie which is a piece of wire wrapped in sheet metal. It was frozen half open. I also have bought the concentrate which is much cheaper: http://rustdepot.com/. I've also soaked the block on one model A engine with it while the radiator was hooked up. It only dissolves the rust and leaves the copper unharmed. It is rather slower than Ospho however and the parts must be submerged.

Re: Rust Removal Products, Anything New?
One more thing, before you 'cook' with vinegar or soak with Evaporust or a similar product all grease and dirt needs to be removed correct? Is there any solvent used for this cleaning which will not allow the vinegar or soak product to do it's job because of it's residue?

Re: Rust Removal Products, Anything New?
Leo,
I soaked a steering gear box in cold vinegar after rinsing in solvent to remove the big chunks. I soaked the box with some oil residue and when I removed it after a few days there was no trace of any oil. The vinegar will often remove paint along with the rust. Chet |
