Default Flushing the lower hogs head.

Is there a good way to flush the oil system on a "T"? The oil pan inspection plate is easy enough, but what about getting any sediment out of the lower hogs head? The engine was put together in 1959, so I'm guessing there may be some accumilation in there.

Greg I`m not sure but if you have one of those air siphon wash down guns I believe I`d try that down thru the top with some diesel or some thing of that nature of a bath. If the hog houseing is off I think you can do a pretty good job that way. Just my 2 pennies. Monte

There is a plate with a rectangular hole that separates the little well at the bottom of the pan from the circulating oil above. If you are worried, I would bend a piece of wire to use to loosen any accumulated crud and pull it out through the drain plug hole. It may be more important to remove the engine inspection cover (the plate under the crankshaft) and wash the accumulated crud out of the dipper depressions.

Tell us why you feel the need to flush it out to begin with. Some fresh oil and a half hour run in the driveway followed by another oil change may be all you need. The oil that comes out should tell the tale.

There's often a bunch of cotton fragments down there in an older engine but any that don't come out when you change the oil aren't going to cause you any trouble at all. I agree with Charlie; just change the oil a couple times and all will be well.

You could also install the trans screen that goes under the hogshead cover. It will help to pick up anything that breaks loose and starts floating around. Works especially well on band fibers.

I already have the screen in the top of the trans. It does catch a lot of the cotton. I took the tray off the bottom of the pan, and it was clean as could be. Regular oil changes the past 50 years have apparently been very effective. Down the road I go!
