Default magneto magnets question

Does any one know how to test the magnets for strenth. I see there was a gauge for the testing. Without this gauge is there a accurate way to do so?

Some tests an be done with the magnet off the flywheel. Tests on the flywheel may not be reliable.

If a piston can hang from the magnet, the strength is ok for magneto generating.

A piston works, or a steel bar of approx 2lbs should just be picked up by the magnet pole.

Thanks for the reply. I tried to use a six inch steel ruler while they are on the flywheel. It barely pulls the ruller. I had 26volts ac prior to taking it apart. I am getting new windings on the coils and started to think that I SHOULD PUT RECHARGED MAGNETS IN. One friend of mine told me if I recharge the magnets in the car that the charge would only last about one year. I find that hard to understand. Do you have any comment on that thought?

If you have it tore down this far, put in a recharged set of magnets. One of yours could be cracked for all you know. If you can't find someone local, send them out and all recharge and balance them for you.

Thanks again for the help. I will order screws and magnets. I of course don't have the proper gages to set them up and was afraid to replace them and loose adjustment. I think I figured a way to check the height . Thinking I can mount the flywheel on the engine without the coils on and use a dial indicator to check that they are even , without any being to high. I will get a measurement from the flywheel prior to taking it apart to use as a standard. Does this sound doable? Frank pkny.

Frank, I would think there should be someone in the area with the proper tools to help you set it up. Give me a call and we can visit.

Stand it on its nose and use a brass feeler gauge set. Pretty cheap tool and you can dial it in to the correct height.

To set magnet height use a micrometer to check the height from the magnet clamp to the ring gear. You can get all of the magnets within 0.005 really easy this way.

Ah Doug and rond , both good ideas. What is the nose of the flywheel? I have a ground flat steel plate I could put it on the plate and I do have brass feeler gauges to check the spacing. Frank pkny

Nose of the engine, with the flywheel attached.
