Default 1914 Gas Tank Shutoff Valve

The shutoff valve on my 1914 T doesn't drip but it is always wet. The garage always has a faint gas smell. Does anyone have a procedure to lap in the seat that will provide a very good shutoff? Is there an alternative valve that would be safer to use? Thanks, Ed

Easy to take apart the lever, remove the cotter pin, spring and then the brass lever. One note, most times on the iron bowl, that brass lever is stuck. And the large nut with the wire mesh brass screen can be stuck.

In that case don't use pressure, or leverage or the handle will break, Heat up the brass nut and the handle with a torch, then stick it in a freezer,,the change of temp will contract the brass and the stuck parts will come free without damage.

Then lap with valve paste or I use TimeSaver, fine, good for brass too.

After lapping for good seal, replace with new spring and cotter pin. Get a spring at the hardware store and cut to length.

Whatever you do, don't just hammer on the exposed end of the valve shaft. It is really soft and will deform very easy. If you feel you must hammer on the valve shaft to get it out, drill a hole in the end of a piece of round stock just barely larger than the valve shaft, fit your driver over the shaft, then tap it out.
