Default 1929 helpful tips

I am new here to the forum and have owned my 29 Tudor a little over a year. We purchased this 29 at an estate sale last May. Koons estate near Hershey Pa , it was not running at sale time but didn't take much to get running with the help of a couple of the local model A guys and Les Andrews books . Over the past year we drove it about 600-800 miles ( speedo cable keeps breaking) taking it to local cruises and having a great time fixing little things along the way. It has been a great car and the previous owners had a lot the mechanicals in great shape . My question is now need your help in checking all the little things that may need lubed , greased etc besides the obvious things. Does anyone have a detailed list of items to go over and check off while doing a vehicle go over. My 12 year old is going to be helping and a list would be great so nothing gets missed. Any advise you have for a young guy( I'm 35) new to these old cars would be greatly appreciated.

You can also purchase a lub chart from a number of vendors that you can hang in your shop so as to check what you are doing or to tell your 12 year old what to do.

Have fun with your car. You will note a number of things should be done at 500 miles. So some things may be due on your rig.

You can buy a wall size lubrication chart that shows what you are asking about.
I bought one at the national meet years ago.

Looks like Fred was .005 seconds faster.

there is a great checklist that I use that I found on the diablo model a club's website. It give you a list of things to do/check every XXX miles.

Another good resource is a copy of the original operators manual.

http://www.amazon.com/Ford-Model-Ins...+owners+manual

And for understanding many details, the service bulletins are great. The service bulletins were the regular service notifications sent out to dealers most every month. The have been bound into a single book.

I use the lube section in the Les Andrews red book on page 3-1.

Actually, I just did my oil and lube today. I use a grease gun on every fitting (except the steering column) every 500 miles. Most of them only take a half-pump before I see a bit of grease ooze out from the connection. Not so with the rear bearings and U-joint where you can't easily tell when you've got enough, so I'm judicious with those. All that excess grease needs to be cleaned up, so I go through ten shop towels every time I lube. There must be a better way, but oh well...

I also lightly oil my horn, generator, distributor, and brake rods every 500 miles. Every 1,000 miles I put a little smear of Vaseline on the distributor cam to keep the points block from wearing. It's always gone, so I'm considering doing this every 500 miles.

After all that grease I end up scrubbing the chassis and front-end parts so they don't collect too much dirt.

Ah, this sounds like a "catch 22".

If a question isn't asked, can it be a question?

There is a "Lubrication & Periodic Maintenance" checklist on page 120 of How to Restore Your Model A, Vol 2.

Yes I have les Andrews books , they have been a great help. Thank you all for the replies . We are having a great time with the car. Now if I can just locate a drivers seat that is still in decent shape, there must be a hot fodder out there with a set sitting in his way lol
